Over View
Mr. Bilbo Baggins was living quite the extraordinary life; always home for tea time, big meals and a seemingly unlimited supply of tobacco to create smoke rings as he sat in his garden. Then one day, his life became the most extraordinary and i started with a knock at the door.
In fell 12 dwarves, beards long enough to be tucked into their belts who were on a quest to recover what was stolen from them: heir home and a mountain of gold inside a mountain of stone. You see, a wizard named Gandalf had selected Bilbo to be their thief in this journey to recover what was stolen.
So off Bilbo traveled lands that threw him and his 13 companions into grave peril. Crossing mountains and plains, battling creatures of darkness and even experiencing invisibility.
Writing Style
The writing really focuses on driving the plot forward so descriptions are keep to a minimum. I thought it was going to be heavily detailed so I was taken by surprise but I quickly adjusted. He uses quirky words and sentences in his writing which really shine a light to his craft. Even so, when the ending came, I wanted another thousand pages just because the 387 were not enough. It left a hole in my chest when it was over and I'll never forget a single character.
Characters
I quite enjoyed all the characters. They were kind of silly at times but it made them all the more enjoyable to read. I loved watching Bilbo develop from a Baggins to a Took throughout the book. he became braver and in the end didn't mind giving away his share of treasure even with all they'd been through. He became adventurous and brave and wise so it was truly nice to see.
Events
I loved everything about the plot of this novel. It moved quickly and effectively and had me laughing and at the edge of my seat for the entire time. The different dangers really helped show the development in Bilbo, at first afraid of the things lurking and then still afraid but brave enough to fight back when it came time for a rescue. It was truly a masterpiece, all he monsters and beasts created and magical items were a wonder.
Last Thoughts
The Hobbit is truly a treasure and will continue to be one for years to come. I urge anyone who hasn't read it to do so as soon as possible. Even those who have only watched the movies! I assure you, the novel is much different from the movies-- An alternate adventure even!
I had so much fun with this novel and I hope to find time to read it again soon!
