Historical Mysteries Settings Challenge (2016) - Particpant Threads
Finished The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side last night for the final book needed for Master of History! Agatha Christie is a constant favourite.Going to take a shot at Doctor of history now so i'll need to broaden out into another 5 categories. Should be fun, i've got a few of my favourite categories still available. So far my least favourite has been the colonial america one, and even that was pretty good in places.

Finished and really enjoyed A Front Page Affair! My review here:

Still expanding my masters: 13 books in 5 categories.I read the latest Maise Dobbs, Journey to Munich. Maise's reaction to her personal tragedy has rather overwhelmed the last two books, but she may be moving on. I found that I don't remember much about the prior book in the series. I think this one is better.

Mrs Happy just brought this one home from the library for me - about #3 on the pile. Ms. Gregory is definitely one of my favorites :)
I finished The Mamur Zapt and the Donkey-vous , my 9th book for this challenge. My original post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It's very good! I usually read the cambridge books as soon as they come out, not sure why this one has sat on my to-read for so long unread.
Finished Murder in the Place of Anubis, gaining another category. It's quite a short book, but very entertaining. Some very colourful characters, especially in the suspect pool!

Travelling internationally for work without much to do except read and work, so I continue onwards.Finished The Dragon Scroll and enjoyed it a great deal. I will definitely be reading more of those.

I always seem to read a lot when i'm travelling, absence of the usual distractions and the ease of carrying plenty of reading material with you these days.
On that note, finished Black Arrow. Easily the best in the series so far, though heartbreakingly tragic on so many levels.
I also love this series. The characters are so vivid, so colourful and (in a few cases) comical. They are very good at tugging the heartstrings as well.

You're really rolling through your books, Nick. Excellent! I, on the other hand, haven't managed to read much of anything for a whole week.
I didn't bring much else to do while I was travelling ;) I tend to binge, then go a while without reading anything, then binge again.

I'm also going through a minor slump, Veronica. I've only read 5 books in August. Hopefully, September will be better.

I finished Sins of the Blood the other day. I was somewhat disappointed since it was three short stories which ended very early in the book followed by a short explanation of the town where the books are set and then a very long preview of another of her stories in the series. Oh well, the short stories were good.My original post:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I finished The Haunting of Maddy Clare earlier this week. I really enjoyed this book. I wondered if I should include this in the historical mysteries list since there is a strong paranormal element to the story, but it is definitely a historical mystery story. I loved this story and want to read more by this author. My Original Post https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Completed #14, Lady Cop Makes Trouble, early 20th century, set in 1914 New Jersey. A fun follow-up to Girl Waits with Gun and just as enjoyable. I enjoy the Kopp sisters and 1914 New York / New jersey setting. I still have only read five time periods!Original post #8: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

1. Roman Empire: The Ides of April by Lindsey Davis
My original post
I've completed the Masters level! I don't think I have enough time left in the year to complete the Doctorate but I'll give it a shot anyway. Whether I complete it or not, this challenge has been a lot of fun and I've discovered some new series and time periods through it.
I just finished reading The Anatomist's Wife by Anna Lee Huber. This is my first book I have read in this series. Looking forward to reading more. One more book to go, to meet my goal:)

Doctorate LevelCompleted: 2/15
Victorian England: Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell

I finished A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley today. I like the writer but I struggle with the de Luce family. They seem so broken and they go out of their way to hurt each other. I definitely need some time away from these characters. My original post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
It looks like I have managed to complete my Masters of History. I had only signed up for a Bachelors, but I realized I finished the Masters. My original post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I finished The Holy Thief by William Ryan. I'm now working on my Masters of History. My original post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Doctorate levelCompleted: 4/15
Ancient Rome/Roman Empire: Enemies at Home
Medieval England: The Unquiet Bones
My original post
Veronica wrote: "How did you like that one, Carol? I've not read many books set in Russia, in any time period."I loved it, and Ryan should be better known than he is. If you like police procedurals in non-US settings, it's especially enjoyable. I preferred the third book in the series, The Twelfth Department but it's a close race.
You might be interested in Despite The Falling Snow which has a dual timeline: contemporary and 1930s Russia. It would be a stretch to call it a mystery, but it's a quiet, unusual, enjoyable book.
I finished The Bookseller's Tale by Ann Swinfen today. This is a new author to me and I loved how she told this tale. The writing was wonderful and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!Original post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
