Stuart Finlay | 24 comments Currently reading in the meantime by Howard Spring. It is a mid career autobiography by a writer who started at the age of 42, his 3rd book called My son My son sold over a million copies. I selected it because he travelled with Winston Churchill at a days notice for 3 weeks on the Prince of Wales to meet Roosevelt it was all top secret at the time.

The book was printed in Britain during the war and it is amazing how they printed in tiny text and the paper was really thin. It isn't on the system unfortunately so I can't add it

I pasted a tiny extract on my profile about Churchill

Hi STuart, sounds terrific. If you want - and have the time - you can add it to the system yourself. There is a link called "add books manually" when you search for the book on the site but can't find it.
You just put in what you have. Writer, Publisher, Edition, ISBN - if available.
That way others who are interested would be able to find it.
ANyway, sounds terrific!!!
Best,
André

Alisa (mstaz) Stuart, thanks for the recommendation. Remember to always post the book cover, author link, and author photo when it is available. I could not find one of the books mentioned (In the Meantime) so you might do as Andre suggested and add it to goodreads. Your other mention should look like this:

Thanks Alisa for assisting Stuart. Stuart we have a precise way of using the goodreads software which is beneficial to our site, our group members, and our authors. Please take a moment to become familiarized with our methodology.

We have a folder called Help Desk and within that folder is a thread called Mechanics of the Board which should help you I hope.

Stuart Finlay | 24 comments Just started reading Churchill by his contemporaries, it was published to coincide with his 80th birthday. It consists of chapters written by people who knew him or worked with him. The first chapter is written by a chap who went to Eton school with him and has the funny story of when the headmaster tried to tell him off "Churchill" he said "I have very grave reason to be displeased with you." "And I sir" replied Churchill "have very grave reason to be displeased with you."

Stuart, you have the photo and Winston Churchill in text; but no bookcover or author noted for the new book. What is the book's name and who was the author?

Churchill was never one to let the other get the upper hand.

Michael Flanagan (loboz) Seeing we are on a Churchill tangent. My current read The Story of the Malakand Field Force by Winston S. Churchill by said Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill is a fascinating book. Written in 1897 it deals with so many issues that current day troops are facing in Afghanistan. Event though I am still reading this book I highly recommend it for any one with an interest in the area.

message 726: by Michele (new)

Michele I just finished Upheaval, about the 1790's, which was a very busy decade all over the West, and even in Russia where Catherine started out a supporter of the Enlightenment but ended up the opposite. And where the French Revolution turned nasty, etc. Great book whose thesis is that the world was as interconnected as it is now, though admittedly, the pace was a little slower. I also read Team of Rivals at last. It was a superb book from which I learned much about the lesser known members of the Cabinet, and loved the in depth portraits of the major folks. I am currently reading The Autobiography of Mark Twain, and the original of Look Homeward Angel, called O, Lost! Great scene in the beginning about watching men ride to Gettysburg past the family farm in PA. Can't wait to get to the main characters. Also reading Half in Love by Linda Gray Sexton, daughter of Anne Sexton, struggling with mental illness. I also read The Lacuna recently, about a fictional author who lived with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Mexico before moving to Asheville, NC and getting caught in the GOP 1950's anti-Communist nightmare. Very good.

Alisa (mstaz) Michele, our club requirements are that you post the book cover and author links for any books and/or authors mentioned in your posts. Doing it this way allows others who are interested to see the works to which you are referring, and allows the goodreads software to populate the site and reference where books are discussed. It is of benefit to all our members. Please check the information on the mechanics of the board for instruction, and let any of the moderators know if you need help or have questions. Books mentioned should appear as book cover (always), author photo (when available) and author link (always).

Stuart Finlay | 24 comments I came across this quote from Winston Churchill in a book I have nearly finished. Winston Spencer Churchill - Servant of Crown and Commonwealth. It was published in 1954. (Not listed) I think the quote was originally in My Early Life.

I liked this outlook on life's difficulties.

One must never forget when misfortunes come, that it is quite possible they are saving one from something much worse; or that when you make some great mistake, it may very easily serve you better than the best-advised decision. Life is a whole, and luck is a whole, and no part of them can be separated from the rest.

Excellent quote Stuart.

Stuart, I just noticed something about your citation; Churchill's name in linkable text is missing and you cited the book by using the link versus the book cover which I know is available. You do have the author's photo correct.

The citation should look like this:

Hello Phil,

Let me help you with your citations. We have rules and guidelines regarding these:

October Dreams A Celebration of Halloween by Richard Chizmar by Richard Chizmar

Getting a Grip Clarity, Creativity, and Courage in a World Gone Mad by Frances Moore Lappé Frances Moore Lappé

In the case of both of the above books, there was no author's photo available so only two of the three parts were available.

Remember for every citation there should be three parts when they are all available. If one of them is not; just indicate that in your citation.

Book cover, author's photo, and the author's name in text which is linkable.

Thanks.

Bentley

PS: Have you introduced yourself on the introduction thread?

Here is the introduction thread:

I only ask that because usually for all new members we help them out and give them some great links to useful group site info.
