25.13 - M1nks's task: Art Can Set You Free

Glass for Option 2
and
The Color Purple for Option 4
Will those work? Thanks!"
Glass will work so long as the book is poetry. The option is for actual poetry rather than the poetry genre because sometimes books can be shelved as poetry when they aren't.
The Color Purple is definitely a tale about individuals fighting society. Approved.

All of those look fine.

No sorry, that's just one group of 'people' fighting another group of people. I'm looking for individuals standing up to society's oppression.

I don't know if this helps or hurts, but I wanted to help clarify - Glass (and all of Ellen Hopkins' books) are novels in verse. Not poetry in the usual sense, but a novel written in verse format. Obviously it's up to you as the task creator if you want to consider verse novels as poetry for the purpose of your task. :)

You'd have to post the book for me to check. Some books have poetry listed as a genre and they are..."

I'm not familiar with them, would you consider them poetry? If so then you are free to use them.

Thanks!"
Both approved.

Glass for Option 2

Are you asking me for my opinion, or the people who requested to use them?
I think it's really a matter of opinion, so it's hard to say. I love Ellen Hopkins, but her books aren't what I personally think of when I think of poetry. But I'm sure some people do think of it as poetry.

If you go to the "look inside" feature for this book, you can see the first few pages and see what you think, as task creator. :)

Thanks for the link, now I know what they are.
You could certainly make a case for it as modern poetry. A lot of art is a matter of opinion which is why I created the options this way. If people want to claim them as poetry I won't object.

Yes, if you think it's poetry you are welcome to use it :-)

Or would a cozy mystery with cooking fit the bill (option 3)?

Thanks, Nicola.
I think these 2 would be pretty safe for Option 1...

Yes they will work for Option 1 :-)
I thought they were meant to be for Option 4 at first!

An nice stone Lion Head Door Knocker?

It looks to me as if the man is standing in front of a big stone wand sculpture?

Those don't really seem to have enough in them to qualify. The second one especially. There needs to be a real focus on cooking, not just a bit of flavour.

The Anatomical Shape of a Heart
The two main characters are into art: she draws and he does graffiti.

Thanks!

My Life in France by Julia Child"
Yes, that looks to be fine.

I'm not sure about that one. The blurb certainly talks about their different interest in art but it might be, when you read it, that it turns out just to be a way of spicing up the story a bit and there really isn't all that much art involved. To work for this task option, the two don't just have to be 'artists' but their art must feature in the book in a way more than just as a conflict or common attraction between them. Art should be very prominent.
I think, unless someone has read it, the only way to tell would be to read it and then you could make a judgement call.

Thanks!"
Yes, I can :-)

Sweater Quest: My Year of Knitting Dangerously
The author decides to challenge herself with knitting an elaborate "Starmore" design sweater (Fair Isle). The book is about the process of knitting
From the blurb:
Along the way, Adrienne investigates the tangled origins of the coveted pattern, inquires into the nature of artistic creation, and details her quest to buy supplies on the knitting black market. As she tries not to pull out her hair along with rows gone wrong, Martini gets guidance from some knitterati, who offer invaluable inspiration as she conquers her fear of Fair Isle. A wooly Julie and Julia, this epic yarn celebrates the profound joys of creating—and aspiring to—remarkable achievements.
Thanks!
And thanks for a fun challenge :-)

If it's written in the same style and you see it as poetry then you're good to go.

Those look more to be ornaments rather than statues, especially the first one. It's a little more difficult to tell with the second as there isn't anything to give it perspective. If you know by context in the book that it is actually quite large I might change my mind depending on evidence.
For instance if that brown thing behind it is a door then it's obviously very large and would qualify as a statue rather than a house decoration.
Edit: Looking at some of the other book covers with more to go on, it looks like that falcon is meant to be very large. It might be bad drawing but this book is approved.

It doesn't seem to. They look to be working for 'society' rather than fighting against it.

Yes."
Thank you very much.

No sorry, I can't really see that fitting for either option.
