There's a reason it's that fanfic style - Hero was written as a project where fanficcers and fanartists collaborated to produce original fiction. The author was a BNF in Potter fandom for many years.

If you liked Carry On, A Hero at the End of the World uses the same sort of fan-fic writing; I thought it was better than Rowell's. The characters are a little older than standard YA, but there wasn't any sex on page, so it still sort-of qualifies as YA. It also happens to be one of those love it or hate it books.
