A visitor to my Sunday School class recommended The Case for Christ so I wrote it down. I found the book on a shelf at my son's house yesterday! I love it when I can borrow a book. Inexpensive is good, free is even better! And, yes, apparently I "shop" for books in other peoples' homes.

A customer at work recommened The Book Thief, and it was the best recommendation I've ever gotten from a stranger!

I finally did it! I walked up to a library, explained the Challenge, and asked for a recommendation. To my surprise, I stumped her!! (in her defense, she was a children's librarian. I said I was fine reading kids books too, but the one she suggested - SistersI'd already read.) So she gave me what looks like a cozy mystery: No Cooperation from the Cat: A Mystery

A Thousand Splendid Suns is one of my all time favorite books. Now, when women in the Middle East are in the news as victims of abuse, I think of this book.

I agree that many of us are meeting for the first time on this thread. So, why not accept a recommendation? I have several John Grisham books and would like someone to recommend one for me. My sister dropped off a box of them some time ago and I have only read two of them, so far.

Patrica- I have mainly read John Grisham's early books. If you have not read A Time to Kill, The Client or The Firm I would recommend them.

One of the laboratory science students at the hospital where I work recommended "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri. This is a great book about trying to balance the values and traditions of two cultures.

I got my book recommendation from a librarian, No Cooperation from the Cat: A Mystery, and it's absolutely awful. I'm on page 23 and not sure if I can go any further. What are our other options for getting recommendations again? I hadn't put much thought into this since I figured my plan of "get rec from librarian" was solid. I just haven't met anyone new, no one new at work, no one new in my neighborhood, I've got nothing! So, you guys, recommend a book! I like new fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, romance, mystery, and graphic novels. My last five star read was Bitch Planet, Vol. 1: Extraordinary Machine.

Sci-fi graphic novel set in the near future...sounds right up your alley. And, if you like it, there are nine more volumes.

Ahh my list must be wrong, I read Vol 1 of Y the Last Man already! I'll have to fix that (sometimes I get confused between the GR listing for #1 vs Volume 1). And while I love Vaughan's other stuff, I didn't care for this one. What else ya got?

Anna is a nice summer time contemporary - just a light fluffy read. And Dangerous Girls made me think and I couldn't put that one down and once I finished I made my best friend read it!
Looking at your list, comparing what's on your TBR list with what's on my Read list, I would go with The Sculptor.

Sold!! Thank you both!!! I will read the first one out of those three that I can get from my library. I am 100% confident that it will be better than the book I tried to read last night :-)

I'll be reading Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall, as recommended by my new marathon training partner. I will be reading this in October in preparation of my fourth marathon!

I just finished reading A Time to Kill which was recommended to me by a newly encountered person online. It was fantastic.

Seriously need help with this prompt. I don't get to meet a lot of people in my life, and when I do, they aren't readers. Help!

I ended up getting recommendations right here, so I will return the favor to you. Hi, Elizabeth, nice to meet you! I recommend:
Grave Secret (Harper Connelly #4) (because I looked at your "read" books and you've read the first 3 haha and I loved this series!)
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (because you read and liked Who Fears Death, and I thought this book had a similar feel)
Station Eleven (because it was my favorite book I read last year)
Do any of those work for you?

Oh my gosh! Yes! You are a lifesaver! And I will have an excuse to read the next Harper Connelly book. I will also add the other books to my To-Read list.

If asking librarians and booksellers counts, and shelf tags count, then surely this also counts. It also eliminates hoping to ask the person with taste closest to yours. http://www.powells.com/staff-picks

I got a new boss at work recently, and trading good book recommendations was a great way to break the ice and make a good impression!

I was hoping to get somebody to recommend a specific title for me- either online or in person. Not a list of books, just one book, and I'll read it whether it's the kind of thing I normally read or not.I mean I did that with the "first book you see in a bookstore" and it reminded me why I don't normally read that kind of book!

From the Powell's list The President's Hat stood out for me, so I went in and picked it up. While I was there, I was looking at something in the mystery room and two women next to me were talking about never having read Agatha Christie. I couldn't help myself and gave them a look, and they looked back at me like they had just broken the lamp in the living room. I said that the best mystery I had ever read was a Christie. They really wanted to know what it was, and I eventually pulled the title And Then There Were None out of my memory. As they were noting the title, another woman just behind us (seriously, the place is huge but smashed with readers) jumped in and said her son loves Christie and told her that was the best one. We pointed out the C aisle and the two ladies scurried off to look for a copy. <3
I'm beginning my journey towards yoaga teaching certification and a fellow yogi recommended one of my first books be The Power of Ashtanga Yoga: Developing a Practice That Will Bring You Strength, Flexibility, and Inner Peace--Includes the complete Primary Series

I read (and would recommend!) All the Bright Places. I moderate another GR group and asked for recommendations for a group read, and this was the suggestion that won from a member who'd only just joined (so I'll take that as just met :D). It was really moving, I read it in May and it's still stuck in my head

When I was first hired as a new teacher at the end of last year, a colleague recommended Every Day as she was reading it with her students. I read it earlier this year. As a YA book, it's a super easy read, but the story is very engaging as it's easy to forge connections with the characters. It's one of my most frequently lent out books to students.

When a new employee started at my place of work, I told her about the reading challenge. She's also an avid reader. Her recommendation, which I did read, The Five People You Meet in Heaven. BTW, for her I recommended The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
