message 4871: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Boyd | 152 comments Christine,

Digital rights management (DRM) is a systematic approach to copyright protection for digital media. The purpose of DRM is to prevent unauthorised redistribution of digital media and restrict the ways consumers can copy content they've purchased. DRM products were developed in response to the rapid increase in online piracy of commercially marketed material, which proliferated through the widespread use of peer-to-peer file exchange programs. Typically DRM is implemented by embedding code that prevents copying, specifies a time period in which the content can be accessed or limits the number of devices the media can be installed on.

Jenni - this has no effect on my purchases as a reader. I have replaced a few ereaders and have always been able to still access my books. As long as this has no effect on that type of access, then no, it will not influence me.

message 4874: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Boyd | 152 comments Thank you Pat,

The reason I'm after input on this issue, I myself thought DMR was a good thing, as in stopping piracy, but I've heard comments that consumers are put off by products that are DMR enabled, as it limits the use of devices the downloaded ebook, song ect. can be viewed on. I'm wondering if this is true, and is it a factor considered when purchasing a product. Or is this just a case of those who are making big business in piracy, trying to dissuade the copyright owner from enabling this on their product for fear of loss of sales.

message 4875: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments I have had this happen mainly with music. If an IPod goes bad, some songs will not transfer to a new device. I find it annoying to have to go and buy it again if I want to keep the song, but I have never looked to see if something has that protection and then turned away. I've never had it happen with a book. I guess I rely on the cloud to always keep my copy and let me transfer it to my device whether that's a new device or the old one.

message 4877: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Jenni, my view is that of Pat's. I am all for preventing privacy. I also count on the cloud to save my stuff; if it fails, then it fails, but I won't refuse to buy an ebook because it is DMR enabled.

My family also loves Scattergories. We made our own version and have about 200 different categories written on small pieces of paper and also another set of 25(no x) letters for the alphabet. They are kept in separate zipper bags. We shake them up and choose 8 of the categories(or how ever many you want) and then we write those down. Next we choose a letter and set the timer for 1 minute.:)

I will post a Sunday Sacttergories over on the games thread each week if you want to play:)
