My favorite bit of Australia! My ambition is to retire in or around Port Douglas. But the reality is we will probably head to Mackay or thereabouts when we leave here.
We used to live in Blackwater, 200km inland from Rockhampton and had a beach house at Greenhill, 80 km south of Mackay. Oh how I miss it! So if you know anyone who would like to buy a nice little pub in the central North Island of NZ.....I'll sell them ours.

me too Ter'e. I just hate it when they warm it right through! I will go without a steak rather than eat an overcooked one. I once left a restaurant because when i ordered my steak blue - they asked me what that was.....8:D

My son and daughter-in-law live in Mackay, as for the pub, it sounds lovely, I just don't know of anyone looking to buy a pub at the moment, I'm trying to sell a unit.

I am going to spill some of my beans. After 7 wks of having vertigo and staggering everywhere......I still could not get my (insert naughty word) primary Dr. and the ENT Dr. In sync.........,I finally took the bull by the horns. I got on You Tube and started doing my own research. I found something called the Epley Maneuver. The prob behind this was exactly me. My problem started after havin that horrible reaction to rhe injection of dilaudid.
So, Hubbs and I positioned me on the sofa and performed the E.M. For four days straight.........and poof...........my vertigo was gone.

We are now at 8 wks and still no paperwork from either Dr. I have called, complained, cussed to no avail. However, due to my own resourcefullness, I am much better.

On the subject matter of Chicken Pot Pie.........oh Jean........how I love this. I have not made this in quite some time. Yummo.

Janet, the very thought of eating beef makes me queasy - I'm allergic. Years ago a doc thought I had IBS, then I went to another doctor after the first retired and sent me to an allergist, and we found out I was allergic to beef, but not milk. Weird, huh?

And that is totally going to be me one day: "I still have a great-aunt, now in her nineties, who will not give up her coconut cake recipe, and no one within fifty miles will make a coconut cake without drawing their curtains, for fear that she’ll know." My grandmother always taught me, "Autumn, never give out your recipes."

I've just been looking at the Epley Manoeuvre on the Internet as it sounded interesting. I am fascinated to learn how you managed to clear the vertigo yourselves by carrying out this manoeuvre. Well done! I'd never heard of it before but it just goes to show that pills from the doctor don't always cure everything. I'm so glad it worked for you. :)

message 4423: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Heather, benign positional vertigo is a common, very distressful condition. The balance system in the inner ear involves little round stones. The position of these stones mandates how one perceives where they are in space. A crack on tne head can shift these pebbles out of position creating a sickening sensation of the room moving or spinning. The sensation is triggered by certain movements like sitting up, rolling over, turning or even "looking the wrong way". Some people are so affected, they can't even walk. The key to resolution of symptoms is to get those stones back in place. Thus the Epley maneuver, which generally works great. Benign positional vertigo is often misdiagnosed as an inner ear infection.

Dr. Chris

Well, you learn something new every day. I wonder if I'll be able to impress my son with my new found knowledge. (He's a second year medical student). Seriously though, I remember having vertigo diagnosed many years ago although it doesn't sound as bad as what Tere had. I was still driving but I remember dreading junctions because the constant turning of my head from side to side would make me feel really dizzy and nauseous.

He's at Birmingham in the Midlands. At the moment he's focused on doing as well as he can in his 2nd year exams so he can intercalate. That means doing an extra year in his 3rd year so that he gets a BSc as well as his medical qualification. He changes his mind about what he wants to do all the time because he's enthusiastic about so many topics but one of his favourites is endocrinology (whatever that is). I'm not sure if I've even spelt it right. I let my hubby discuss all the science stuff with him - it's definitely not my forte.

So he has not been to college, Heather? There was one school in the US (in Kansas City, Kansas) where 5 years (maybe it was 6 years, I forget) would get you a medical degree and a college degree. Not sure if that program is still available or not. Endocrinology would have been my 2nd career choice, Heather. Those MDs deal with diabetes, thyroid issues, adrenal gland diseases and all sorts of relatively rare glandular type illnesses. It is a fascinating field. I remember those days of liking everything. He will settle into a favorite eventually!

Hi Christine. It's five years to get a medical degree in the UK usually (post A level). I think college is different in the UK than in the US but here it generally refers to post 16 study (A levels, B TECs etc.) and they need A levels (or equivalent) to get into university.
For medical school they need high grade A levels and competition is fierce. They can also study medicine post-degree in which case the length of time is different. Once they have completed the medical degree they go into hospital to train as a junior doctor. He wants to do an extra year, which will give him a degree in a science subject as well as a medical degree at the end of the sixth year.
I take it you have a medical background Christine. Did you specialise in a particular area?

Hi Heather, here in the US, people enter medical school after 12 years of regular school plus 4 years of college/university. Med school is 4 years. Everyone then picks a specialty residency. I chose internal medicine. This generally lasts 3 years (more for surgeons). At that point you can start practicing or go on to a subspecialty fellowship (like endocrinology) lasting around 3 years. I subspecialized in infectious diseases and was lucky enough to land a job at Mayo Clinic, where I had done my residency and infectious diseases fellowship training. That is how I ended up in Rochester, MN. Sounds like your son is extremely intelligent to snare one of those slots, Heather. You must be so proud of him! I always say that all families need a doctor, a lawyer, and a mechanic to run interference for everyone. You will find that it's a great thing to have a doctor in the family!!

I didn't realise you were a doctor Christine. I bet you and my son could chat away for hours. I am very proud of him, not only because he's a bright lad but also because he's got a good heart and my daughter has too.
Hopefully he'll make a doctor. We haven't got a mechanic but my hubby is an IT consultant, and my daughter hopes to study history at university so, you never know, she might end up doing law as a post graduate course. That just leaves the lowly, impoverished writer of the family - what a fail. lol

Haha, I know what you mean Ty. I've not done too badly in terms of family support. However, as an IT consultant my husband is expected to repair everyone's PCs free of charge - neighbours, friends of friends etc. We've even had parents of the kid's school friends in the past.
