Jenni Boyd | 152 comments Well we have had copious amounts of much needed rain, winds increasing, they're expecting cyclone Nathan to do a U-turn, but are still on the alert, so for the moment enjoying seeing everything turning green, and enjoying the indoors with my books!

message 3811: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 235 comments I bought a bright orange coat on Tuesday just because it made me feel joyful. Yesterday I decided I needed a patchwork bag to go with it. It's half done - I should finish that this afternoon. I should really be gardening when the sun's out!

I am appreciative of a nice garden..... but I'm no gardener at all. Not my thing. My garden is a big patio, a big deck, the rest is laid to lawn and some trees. Errr, no flowers! :-\

Don't even have one houseplant indoors! :-\ :-\ That's crap isn't it?!

message 3813: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 235 comments No. Wasting time doing something you don't enjoy is crap! Good for you.

message 3814: by [deleted user] (new)

Not crap Janet! I only do hanging baskets and a few patio plants and we have a big lawn and patio. That's it! I'm not wasting my time putting flower beds in when I've got a dog and 2kids kicking a football around! Anyway need that time for more reading ;)

message 3815: by [deleted user] (new)

And sometimes I'm really lazy and just BUY hanging baskets instead of making them!

:-D

God, yeah, I wouldn't make my own either. I did have a couple out the front a few years back but would forget to water them! I shall carry on admiring other gardens instead!!!

That's why I have no live plants. Cats. I did find a barfed fake hydrangea petal the other day. Went and looked. Sure enough, it's chewed. Grrr.

I have over 27 plants indoors, including 8-9 orchids, which need feeding, watering carefully.

Two green houses in sun lounge at the moment, full of herbs, spices and cat grass.

Outside 6-8 trays full of fresh ground ready to plant our tomotoes(we need an enormous amount of watering).

Do well on spring onions, lettuce, parsley, loads of other things, front lawn and back lawn, borders all to look after, as I do all the gardening.

A Jacuzzi/hot tub, which I check twice a week for the chemical levels, which we keep at 38 C and a decked area.

My wife and I love the peace and quite in our garden, as we look over fields, south facing.

Cats love rushing around the garden and visiting our neighbours gardens.

Our garden is filled with bamboos and grasses, I guess Japanese style with the decking and lighting.

But does take your time away when you want to do other things. (re tennis !)

But I do enjoy sitting in the sun reading a book in the garden.

message 3825: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Sounds wonderful, Sean! I really enjoy this time of year. Our apricot tree is in full bloom and is beautiful.

I'm jealous of neighbors with beautiful flower gardens.

I honestly believe retirement will help when you can enjoy gardening more, and have the time.

Rather than have to be a slave to the garden.

My wife and I do enjoy the garden but it is hard work in the summer with lack of time, with our jewellery shows every Saturday all day.

Apricot tree sounds lovely !

I bet the monkeys take some looking after !!

I bet it is great to enjoy your garden with a book in the summer.

I'm fine, thank you, Aaron. I have lots of teenage monkey hormones flying around!! Gawd!! Everything is sooooo dramatic!!!

message 3831: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not looking forward to the teens...:-/

message 3832: by [deleted user] (new)

Although, are boys as bad as girls? I mean I know I was a stroppy moo when I was in my teens.

You have boys and girls don't you Janet?

message 3833: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 2434 comments Teens. Been there, done that. One piece of advice I would give: If they want the last word, let them have it. It doesn't mean anything.

message 3834: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5303 comments Mod
I'm not going to lie to you Kimberley, it ain't easy. But they're going from being a child to being an adult. It's the biggest transition they're ever going to make. If your boys find a good set of friends around them during those years, they'll be fine. Outside influence can make a big difference.

message 3835: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 2434 comments BTW, my two teens were different. One couldn't wait to get away, the other didn't want to leave. :-)

I have three girls, 18, 15, 11 and my boy is 10. All of it comes with challenges but you learn as you go along.

message 3837: by [deleted user] (new)

I hope so. I'm just enjoying them whilst they're still little(ish) and draw me pictures and give me kisses and cuddles on demand! Though not so much outside the school gates... ;)

message 3838: by [deleted user] (new)

Very true Janet. I learn all the time.

Wow, Sean. Your garden sounds wonderful. With 2 large Labs that use the fenced backyard to run around in, no sense in planting flowers, but lots of trees. Have some green plants in our front living room bow window, and a orchid, on the dining room table. I am not lucky with plants, but so far so good with the orchid, which takes 3 ice cubes/once a week.

message 3841: by [deleted user] (new)

I think Sean should host a 'Good thriller' get together BBQ in his beautiful garden. ;)

What do you think Sean hey!!??! :-D

Lynn Renee | 1708 comments David wrote: "Idly wondering: What books do we return to time and time again?"

I'm one that doesn't tend to re-read books, the same with movies. For some reason I just don't get the point. Suppose that if I found a book that I absolutely fell in love with I might read it again at some point. A friend purchases books and movies, reading and watching them over and over. I've actually talked with my mother about this and she is with me, an avid reader but doesn't get the reading over and over thing. That said, I've been looking to re-read Edgar Allan Poe The Pit and the Pendulum etc. Read originally as a teenager I've been drawn to read them again. I'm now 55 and wonder if I will view them differently.

I'm with you, Lynn. I read yesterday how a woman was re-reading Mo Hayder's Birdman for the fourth time??!!! Especially in the thriller genre, I don't get it. I very rarely go back, not enough time to move forward.

Lord only knows!! I can understand classic literature, contemporary fiction plenty of other genres, but thrillers etc. When you know it, you err know it!!
