Yes I have Game of Thrones to watch.

Spartacus to watch

The Vikings all to watch.

Trying to catch up on Strike Back, watched the first series.

Chicago Fire good as well.

Arrow, Flash, Stalker, Scorpion, all behind on.

More time now that Stricly Come Dancing, X Factor and Celebrity have finished.

Tonight the final of The Apprentise.

January starts the Voice, which I enjoy

Patricia | 1266 comments I do not watch any òf the reality shows. Sorry Sean, not for me. I watched Season 1 & 2 of GOT but not 3. Husband said we need to binge watch 1 & 2 agsin then go to 3 & 4. Anymore I think shows are better if you binge watch them rather than week to week.
Christine - The Closer is another wonderful show.

What is the Closer about in one sentence, Pat?

message 2710: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Pat wrote: "If not for news and sports, I think we could get rid of our satellite TV."

Do you mean cable, Pat? Cable is best for news and sports where I am and they are the reason I stick with cable. Can't not see my Twins or local news guys.

message 2711: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Christine -the Closer is a homicide/detective show in LA, California where the Chief is a woman from the South just newly appointed as she tries to adapt to LA; and her specialty for the job is getting criminals to confess, hence, the closer to a crime. How's that for 1 sentence!

I meant satellite TV - DirectTV. My husband and I are both from Pittsburgh, PA and we can watch the Pittsburgh teams. Yes, that's an extra charge.

Well, Christine, I've been pondering your question, and hoping someone would answer before me. I doubt I can do the show justice, but here goes. Game of Thrones is about a medieval fantasy world consisting of warring houses vieing for the Iron Throne. There is intrigue, violence, sex, loyalty, betrayal, wisdom, mystery, innocence, depravity, strength, power, and love. There are stories and history within each family and between the families. There is a looming larger catastrophe that is developing. It is intense.

Wow, thanks for that, Brenda. You actually make fantasy sound good. I have not been moved by the thought of reading fantasy, though I have promised David to try Alloria, one of his fantasy books. Can a nonfantasy book fan possibly be engaged by Game of Thrones? This is a question for anyone. Janet, you will say "yes"--can you put the explanation for that in words? I cannot wrap my head around this.

message 2725: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Yes, I'm not a big fantasy fan but have read some - maybe 3 books. For GOT, think medieval soap opera where anyone can get killed and does; but there are a few extra dragons, witches and such that a 'normal' soap opera doesn't cover.

Fantasy is easy to watch. Lord of the Rings for example is very visual and a feast for the eyes. Easy storytelling that doesn't require much engagement. GOT is a bit like old swashbuckling with Errol Flynn, a mixture of different things. I can watch various genres, a whole mixture of different programmes but I wouldn't necessarily read a book on how brides select their wedding dresses!! Banal watching is very different from reading. Watching fantasy is a quick two - three hours. A book is a much bigger commitment and I only want to read what I pretty much know will hold my interest. Realistically there isn't enough time to read what I do want without wandering into territory that isn't my favourite. And let's face it, we acquire different likes and dislikes pretty much all the time, and time is the key, it's a time thing. I'm going to the cinema later to watch the last Hobbit film with my elder two girls, wouldn't read the book in a gazillion years. Maybe I'm just weird?!!! ;0))

message 2727: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) You know I don't put Game of Thrones in the same group as Tolkien. It's more like watching I, Claudius with dragons than watching Lord of the Rings.

Tom Mathews | 671 comments Santa has been very good to me.

As pictured above, three of the books I got (My Family and Other Animals, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm and A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East) were on my Amazon Christmas wish list. In addition, my daughter gave me House of Leaves which is on the reading list of Literary Darkness, another group I participate in.

What books did Santa bring the rest of you?

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies both by Hilary Mantel!...but no Glenfiddich with mine 8:(
