Amber Martingale I've been sent paperwork for it. And always got out of it when I mentioned that I'm an insulin dependent diabetic who also happens to have high blood pressure. I'm basically a freaking walking pharmacy.

I was called for jury duty one time. Unfortunately, the two defendants they had scheduled for the day both skipped out on court. They issued bench warrants for them, kept us there for another four hours then sent us home. They do give you the option to prove a disability or health problem but I went ahead and did my duty. My one Aunt has been called so many times that she says she won't go anymore lol. She loved it and was really interested in it for the first three times, after she was called for t he sixth time, she says it is someone else's turn. 😁

message 9404: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments Yes, they do ask about disabilities and/or hardships. We seemed to have an awful lot of sidebars and delays. When they's tell us we were taking a 10 minute recess, it would turn out to be more like 30. The first morning we were supposed to start at 9:00. At 9:40, we were told it would be a wile longer. 20-30 minutes later, it was going to be a bit longer still. Finally, at about 11:30 or so, we were called back into the courtroom and told to go to lunch and be ready to go at 1:00. It got frustrating at times. Some of the State's attorney's questioning was tedious too. Redundant. While I understood why she was doing it, it was hard to avoid appearing bored or irritated sometimes. Still, the procedings and some of the testimonies were interesting.

Amber Martingale I'd usually attach a list of my prescriptions in the paperwork. They'd send back a notice exempting me.

message 9406: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments That sounds perfect.

message 9407: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I'd also add that I had no way of GETTING there unless they provided me with bus tickets or a driver... .

message 9408: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments How many times have you been summoned? It would seem that they could just take your name out of the system!

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) I've been summoned twice for jury duty. Once when I was pregnant with my first child. I was to report on my due date. Got out of that one.

Second time, I completely forgot about it because it was the first week of school and I had 3 kids to get off to school. They called me when I didn't show up and I told them it was the first week of school, I had 3 kids, I forgot and they put me back in the system. Nothing since, it's been a few years now.

message 9410: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 1708 comments I've only been called the one time.

message 9411: by Amber (last edited Jul 26, 2017 10:37AM) (new)

Amber Martingale Twice in Maricopa County, Arizona. Once in Coconino County, Arizona and once in St. Clair County, Illinois, Jean.

I got out of it in Coconino County by including a copy of my semester schedule at Northern Arizona University. No way in hell were they gonna interrupt finals week!

According to what my mom told me, the second time I was called in Maricopa County was during the 2-1/2 weeks I was in a coma.

Eva (bookworm_eve) I find it interesting that you have the option for jury duty in America. I live in the Netherlands and we have no such thing.

You can volunteer for this? How does it work? :)

This description is in my layman terms so if I am wrong with anything please chip in.
The state we live in randomly chooses people for jury duty using our state issued drivers license or identification. It is kind of random as I mentioned earlier that I have an Aunt who has been called at least six times. I am 58 years old and was just called for the first time last year. If there is a reason that going to jury duty would be a hardship for whatever reason be it health or child care etc. we need to prove that the hardship exists, it is then up to the court to accept or deny that request. When we receive a summons to jury duty we go to the courthouse on the date and time given. We are then shown a quick film giving us the information as to what to expect to happen thru the process. If court happens as scheduled you are then asked questions by the prosecution and defense while they choose who they want to be on the jury. If you are chosen to be on the jury you then sit in the courtroom in the jury box during the trial. The day that I was called in for jury duty they had called between 100 and 200 people for the jury pool of people to choose from that day.

message 9423: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 2434 comments I was selected for Grand Jury duty and found it fascinating. We received quite a bit of education about the law, what constitutes a misdemeanor or felony, types and amounts of illegal drugs, actions the police can take, etc. We got to ask witnesses questions, through the assistant district attorney. Then we decided whether there was enough evidence to charge. We met twice a week for several weeks and had a variety of cases: drugs, domestic and sexual abuse, DWI, bank fraud. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

message 9424: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 1708 comments I was disappointed that both defendants no showed for court so we ended up sent home after waiting for quite a few hours. I had been looking forward to it also.

Security at this venue is usually not so bad. If you bring a bag in, they check inside the bag and thats about it. Even though I live in the area, this will be the first time I am going, or at least I hope to go.

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments Hi everyone, just wondering about your opinion of The Dark Tower series by Stephen King? While at the movies the other night I thought the trailer for the movie looked interesting but I think I tried to read the books years ago and tossed into the DNF category?
Also has anyone read Two Nights the new book by Kathy Reichs? I'm in the middle of the book ... it's very different for this author and I find my opinion swayed by my expectation of her previous writing style. Just wondered if anyone here was a bit mind bender by her change in style.

Thanks for the reply Perri. I honestly don't remember. It was many years ago. My husband remembers having the same experience and was surprised they had chosen those books for a movie. So maybe I will grab the book and try again.

message 9433: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I said it because that DOES NOT sound like what I remember of the security at Sky Harbor and Lambert when I last flew...which was 14 years ago when Mom and I moved BACK to Illinois from Phoenix, Arizona. We were not treated very well by the assholes from DHS simply because we were both in wheelchairs AND carried glucose monitors. We were NOT a security threat but that's how they treated us, Lorrea.

We were discriminated against because of our diabetes and the fact I'd gotten out of the hospital a few days earlier after having been in a coma for most of the summer already.

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) I'm sorry that is something you had to go through. I deal with this in a daily basis having a child with disabilities and people treating him rudely because of it.

Very happy to mention, a new member, and author has just joined.

Due to my review on his book yesterday, sent to the author, he has been in communication yesterday and today, just joined, and has agreed to do a full one day Q and A's

Tim Tigner. A former Green Beret.

I will be sending a message to the whole group, asking them to read one or two of his books ready for a QA for end of the month or early September.

I just gave his first book five stars "Betrayal", a great thriller.

Amber Martingale More reason to distrust so-called "Christians"! https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017...

I try to follow "...as ye do to the least of these, my brothers and sisters, so you do also to Me" and "Judge not, lest by your own standards will ye be judged," but this amoeba makes me wanna chuck religion, of ANY kind, into the dung heap!
