Thanks Janet. I'm looking forward to finding out more when she phones this evening. My hope is that it will do her good in the long run. :)

Amber Martingale She will...until she gets homesick. Speaking as a one time college student.

DianeAlice | 142 comments Aah I know how you feel Heather, I think girls are more home bods. I know mine is, she still gets terribly homesick every time she goes back to uni and she's now doing her PhD so should be used to it by now! At least you know she is with a nice set of people and I'm sure she'll find it exciting once she settles in. It's also hard when it's your youngest, big adjustment.

It's fortunate that she's not too far away so she can come home for weekends if she gets really homesick. :)

Thanks Diane. Yes, there's definitely a difference between her and my son. He just seems to take everything in his stride. If we didn't phone him I don't think he would bother (until his money ran out - lol).

A Little better Heather thank you.

Amber Martingale Heather, I wasn't able to do that myself. My family lived in Scottsdale and I went to college in Flagstaff which was approx. 300 miles north and at that time I didn't have a car or a license to drive.

Groovy Lee Heather, I know how hard it is to open that door and let the most precious one in your life enter the world and now must learn how to navigate through it on her own.

I always remember this saying: You trained them, taught them, guided them; Now it's time for them to show you that you did a great job.

I thought that was so cute how you stood strong because you didn't want her to see how you really felt:) There's not a parent in the world that can't relate to that. All the best to her.

message 6760: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I'll stop talking after this, but I wanted to know if anyone else here got to see the supermoon eclipse and if you liked it. We just got to see a tiny, reddish spot in the sky.

message 6761: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments Hi there Groovy,
Yes we watched the lunar eclipse last night if I knew how to post a pic I would throw one up for you. At the beginning we had a good deal of cloud cover which made for some beautiful pictures. By quarter past ten when the eclipse was complete the clouds had moved and it was a really great sight to see. I live in the country and during the eclipse the Big Dipper, Orion and the Little Dipper were extremely visible as well as all the other constellations. I am just not knowledgeable enough to name the rest for my children. It made for a nice tech free family event.I wish you could have seen more of it. We could also see a very distinct line as the eclipse occurred.

message 6762: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments Heather,
I couldn't help but think of my first day of university when I read your post. A whole crowd of us were crammed into the registration office bumping and jostling for position to receive printouts of our schedules. We had to shout out our Major and then were directed where to go. I went to one of the larger universities and it was very overwhelming. Then I hear a voice say "There you go Heather, that girl with the long pony tail is taking Music too...get up there and introduce yourself" This statement was followed by a hefty shove forth of said "Heather" in my direction. Then the Mom proclaimed "Well, the two of you are all set now. Good Luck! I'll see you at Christmas" It is 20 years later and Heather and I have graduated from University together, stood together at each others weddings, been ecstatic at the birth and christening of children and have toughed it out through one divorce. Now the two of us continue to chat each week about the trial of heading into parenting teens. This stage is so tough on parents and kids but I hope your daughter finds a lifetime friend like I did. Keep us posted.

My daughter is more nervous than I expected her to be which has surprised me. I'm just hoping it's fear of the unknown, that she'll meet some friendly folk and settle down into University life. I keep reassuring her and say that at least she's coming home everyday. That that's one stable consistency. I dunno, fingers crossed all will be well. I'm getting wound up because I've got changes ahead. :-\

message 6764: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Thank you, Melanie. At least there were some who got to enjoy it:) What a wonderful story of friendship between you and Heather that all started with college.

Thanks Melanie, that's a lovely story. There's something about sharing new and unknown experiences that bonds people, I think.
We said to her that the friends she makes at university might be the friends she has for life. It was difficult at first because all the other kids were out in the corridor introducing themselves, and she was in her room pinning up photographs of her family and her old friends. I had to persuade her to go out there and mix, which she finds difficult. Once she gets over her initial reservations, though, she gets on with people really well.
We spoke to her last night and she was hanging out with the kids from her apartment all day yesterday, and seems to be getting on with them really well, which is a big relief. Today is her first day at the history department so she has to go through it all again.

I know how you feel Janet. I didn't realise how wound up I had become until after we'd left her. Last night was the best night's sleep I've had in weeks - just knowing that she's made some nice friends put my mind at ease. I'm sure you'll feel the same too. Sometimes the anticipation is the worst. :)

Jean | 2387 comments I'm not a parent, but it is strange for me to see my youngest nephew already in his junior year in college and his younger sister a junior in high school. Their cousins are out in the world or in grad school. I have a feeling of pride and also wonder - like how did they grow up so fast? Congratulations to you moms and dads whose children are spreading their wings!

Groovy, we had a fabulous view of the super moon! It wasn't as red as we've seen in some photos, but it was awe-inspiring nonetheless.

Very sadly not too many questions.

I have not ready any of her books, but have asked a question.

Please help, otherwise we will not get these top authors.

I read the book and liked the science part but the child-like narration was so irritating!

I love Ridly Scott though! So I might.

I'm a fan of Ridley Scott. But, I think I'll wait for the DVD. Now if it had ALIENS in it, I'm there... But I would like to know after everyone has seen it, if it's better than Gravity starring Sandra Bullock.

That's basically what my mom is looking at. She had surgery Saturday, and they had her up walking almost immediately. They expect rehab to be about two weeks, then more therapy on an outpatient basis. I'm retired, too, so I know what you mean about that!

I have just been ridiculously busy at work 14/15 hour days most days. Just getting it back under control and now one of my key staff has handed her notice in...I am happy for her, but she is going to be very hard to replace.
