Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Oh, in the states, a crisp is a dessert. Like apple crisp. It's like fruit prepared for a pie, but instead of a crust, the topping is made of oatmeal, a little flour, brown sugar and butter. YUM!!! We made an apple rhubarb crisp a couple of weeks ago. Lasted about 3 days for 2 of us.

Indeed it is - I am Canadian, thus my language is a combo of British/American. However, one time I was in the States and I asked for a Washroom - the lady looked at me like I was nuts. Needless to say, I learned the term "Washroom" isn't as commonly used south of the border.

Groovy Lee David, grits are delicious when you put butter, sugar, and milk in them. But they're not as good as a bowl of oatmeal.

Sandy, in the south, cobblers are made with a flaky, buttery crust and a fruit filling--mmmm!

message 5562: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I love grits, but with topped with a soft boiled egg, bacon, shredded cheese, butter, salt and pepper and a little garlic powder.

I was away losing my voice at a rugby match! LOL what we call biscuits and what americans in the south call biscuits are totally different lol have been to Memphis and had biscuits with my breakfast and they do resemble scones a bit but with a different texture and taste. you call oreos cookies we would call that a biscuit we do have cookies here too and they are a rougher biscuit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biscuit

and of course the Scottish have shortbread which isn't quite a biscuit but is yummy too

message 5571: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments I thought grits referred to the texture, but looking it up I see it comes from an old English word grytt and groat. Very big in the Southern U.S. I love mine with a pat of butter and a grind of black pepper-mmm

Chinese takeaway for dinner and a lazy evening

hope y'all had a good day

message 5577: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Sean, I saw that, it was a good game. And it seems Federer's got his game back. Did you see those moves?

I also can't believe that young teen walked right on the court and tried to take a picture with him; and his father probably encouraged it. You just don't do that in this day and time. Now he and his father are banned for the season! Why do they have security guards, anyway???

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Venus is back, but I don't know how well she'll do. I think Nadal plays. So, catch up with you afterwards--have a good evening.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Tired and slightly hungover today.....what started out as a few drinks with friends I hadn't sen in a while turned into an early morning - where do the hours go when you are chatting and catching up?
Lucky it is a quiet day at work today!
Big storms over the weekend and we lost one of the lovely old oak trees on the riverbank...the wind just ripped it right out of the ground. We will be lucky to see 5C today, still having strong gusty winds. Would be a lovely day to have stayed at home in bed. (and read of course!)

Jenni.........I owe you such a huge apology.........timing is bad right now and I have not responded to your last emails. 2015 has been a blur so far. 3 mos of hell with my health.......then trying to sell the house.......actually selling the thing........and now packing for our move to MO.

Part of me is so happy and so excited.......the other part of me is simply exhausted. Moving is not for wimps, I can tell you.

Surely the latter part of 2015 will be better.

Jean | 2387 comments I get whiney and cranky with just a few days in the 90s and high humidity )-: It was a little easier to deal with when I was younger, but I don't envy you guys. Sandy, sorry about that big, old tree. Mother Nature is a powerful mother, isn't she! Folks in OK and TX have been getting pounded with tornadoes and floods this month. Pretty calm here in MN, so no complaining about lack of sun this Memorial Day. Jenni - congratulations on your exciting news! Ter'e, girl, keep your eyes on the prize!!!

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments Jean......come and help me find a house!!!!! LOL.

message 5592: by E. (new)

E. | 653 comments Yes in Texas it's rained every day for weeks. Not just rain, but super intense lightening storms, sudden flooding and tornados everywhere. Several days back I had a 70 year old oak lean over on my house, due to over saturated ground. It made me sad to have it cut down, but I had no choice.
The mosquitos are flourishing, and the sunny moments between storms are so humid it's hard to breathe. But the worst part is...the dogs are bored. We rarely get out -in a matter of minutes it can go from sunny to water up to your ankles.

It is really hard to keep cloths on in all these sweat and heat. (Only if I was already living in with or married to my girlfriend!)

Jenni Boyd | 152 comments Thank you Brenda, Jean and Ter'e, I've decided I want to be called Jen-ma, so there will no confusion between me and the other family nanas or grandmas, and also because I like to be different......Feeling sorry for you Titas, I fully understand how you feel, I live in Tropical Far North Queensland, the name should give you an idea, we've had humidity that high, but thankfully not the temp. you feel as though you are literally melting like butter left out on the bench. I just hope you have an air-conditioner to keep you cool at night, so at least you can sleep.

message 5600: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Enjoyed tennis today. It was good to see Venus back on the court even though I knew she wouldn't do too well. Stephens has become one of my favorites.

Hooray for Sharapova, and one of my most favorite men players--wait for it--MONFILS! I didn't think he would win that session. I'm trying to learn French, and I wish I was good enough to know what he was yelling at his coach. To be honest, I don't think I'll see him this weekend, though--just saying.

Congrats Jenni on your beautiful grandbaby. I'm not a grandparent, yet, but when I do eventually have grandbabies, I want to be called HONEY.
