Colbeywynden | 3 comments Hi,

I read a series a 2-3 years ago and the author and series name totally escapes me now. I was wondering if anyone would recognize the series from a description.

Setting: Current day times, those with magic live in their own communities apart from the rest of the work.

Main Character was a female witch. She either worked in or owned a magic store. She has some ability to read the dead. In the later books she gets summoned by the witches council for further training. Either Death or the Grim Reaper gets involved here.

Best friend / room mate was also a witch and her father was on the council.

Had a younger sister.

All the usual fantasy type seems to be around, vampires, shifters, elves, fairies etc.

Book 1 was investigating some murder.
Book 2 she was summoned to the witches enclave for further training and council politics

I know it's not much to go on but was hoping someone would recognize the setting and would be able to help.

Thanks

Janet | 80 comments Sounds a bit like the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. The first in the series is Moon Called

Dymphna (sorcha1971) | 37 comments It is a bit of a long shot because not everything matches, but could it be the Cindy Eller series by Elizabeth A Reeves?

Jan (janoda) | 42 comments Something by HP Mallory?
Either the Jolie Wilkins or the Dulcie series? I've added the first books of the series below.
Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins, #1) by H.P. Mallory To Kill A Warlock (Dulcie O'Neil, #1) by H.P. Mallory

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Doesn't fully match but maybe Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price She has the ability to read the dead.

Bobby (bobbyb-aka-plarry) | 37 comments The White Magic Five and Dime by Steve Hockensmith? Doesn't seem like an exact match, but worth a look.

Louie | 87 comments I think it might be this. The Archived (The Archived, #1) by Victoria Schwab Here's the Description: Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was: a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn't just dangerous—it's a constant reminder of those Mac has lost, Da's death was hard enough, but now that her little brother is gone too, Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself may crumble and fall.

In this haunting, richly imagined novel, Victoria Schwab reveals the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, unbearable loss and hard-won redemption.

Angela Johnson | 96 comments Could it be Midnight Crossroad-by Charlaine Harris?...# 1 in her Midnight series. Midnight is an isolated town in Texas who's residents are an oddball mix of supernatural creatures...witches, true psychics, vampires, were-beasts, angels etc. One of the characters is a witch w/ her own magic shop. And I know, at least in the first of the series, that there's a mystery to be solved. Another of the characters is a psychic that talks to the dead.
