I believe it was a YA book with a boy as the main character. His father died when he was young and he lived with his mother. I want to say she has some kind of mental illness or something and he had to take care of her. One day he comes home and she has disappeared. The boy and his best friend set out to find her.
I am pretty sure the title was something like 'John Pratchet's son' or 'John Preacher's boy'.
I have been searching for this for years. I checked it out from my school library so many times and would love a copy for myself.
