This is driving me insane. I read this book last year and at that time it was fairly new, I would say published in 2012 or 2013. It was the first book in a series. This is what I remember: the main female lived in an apartment building that was falling apart but drove an expensive sports car, she lives in a small town I think. She lost her job (or quit?) and ends up going to work for her friend who is a PI. Someone gets murdered and she helps investigate. The main guy is a police officer who is investigating. She starts to get threatening letters or something. The two date a little (I don't remember any sex but I think this was still considered a romance or maybe a mystery,I remember it being funny too). I wanted to get the second book but I can't think of the title or author. If it helps I got it for free on amazon so the author is probably either new or not that well known yet. Help!

I think you could be thinking of the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovitch. I think the first one is One for the money. They all begin with a number.
No, I've read those and this book was probably meant to be similar but I know it wasn't a Janet Evonovitch book. Thanks though. I remember reading the synopsis of the second book in the series and I believe the heroine gets her PI license and there is a federal agent involved somehow who becomes a possible love interest.
I've definitely read this. It's ringing a bell but can't quite grasp the memory. Could it be The Spellman files?
sounds like one of Laura Griffin's books - maybe in one of the precursors to her Tracer's series...

Some of the details sound a bit like the Kinsey Milhone series (A is for..., B is for...) by Sue Grafton or the Tess Monaghan series by Laura Lippman. Though neither is anywhere near that new...
