The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August
question
hmmm...have i read this book before?
I was wondering why no one has mentioned Replay, which was wonderful. Everyone that I recommended it to has really liked it. I haven't read the 1st 15 lives yet, but I'm hoping it will do the idea justice.
I have not read Replay but may check it out. Just finished Harry August and loved it. It is very much like Life after Life, as in they both have the life/death/born again basis. They are both historical novels and the world building is awesome. I have read both life after life and I found August to be lots more fun.
I must have really lost something in my reading of it. I disliked this book immensely. I thought is was boring, confusing, depressing. I could go on with more adjectives, but I think you get the point. Usually, I like time-travel books. This was not one of them.
It is my opinion that Replay began the concept of reliving the same life over and over and deals with how that would affect how a person lives his life. Life After Life by Kate Atkinson deals with a person perfecting one particular life, and The First Fifteen Lives of Harry Augusttakes that same concept and adds idea of an arch criminal who must be stopped to save the world. Different variations on a theme.
How can you say you've read it before by citing Replay? While the theme of reliving your life over and over again is the same, the mechanism and the stories are completely different! That's like saying "have I read batman before? Yes, because superman came out earlier, and he's a superhero too." Totally different, man.
