Sue | 5 comments Read this in the mid-1960s. Non fiction about a girl who wins a contest (maybe) and the prize is her own horse. Possibly a contest sponsored by a bank? Somehow I feel that it might have taken place on the east coast (where we lived), but not sure. Cloth covered hard back with black and white photographs inside. Title and author nowhere to be found in memory banks. Appreciate any help.

Sue ~~
You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 176 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."

Pixiegirl105 | 176 comments I'm confused, are you saying that my book isn't want you are looking for or that non-fiction isn't what you are looking for. This book was "advertised" when it was released as non-fiction. So if you read in the mid-60's, it might be what you are looking for. :)

From Wiki:
The book then tells the story of two orphan children, Paul and Maureen Beebe, who move in with their grandparents after their parents die.[4] Paul and Maureen work to earn money to buy a Chincoteague pony mare named the Phantom, who has escaped the roundup men on Pony Penning Day for the past two years. Paul and Maureen save enough to buy Phantom, and Paul is able to capture her on the roundup because she is slowed down by her new foal, Misty. However, a man from the mainland buys the pair of ponies for his son before Paul and Maureen can give their money to the fire chief. Paul and Maureen are distressed, but they end up being able to buy Phantom and Misty because the original buyer's son won a colt in the yearly raffle and then decided he didn't need another pony, and chose the colt from the raffle.

She's saying the book she's looking for is nonfiction. She doesn't believe "Misty" is nonfiction.

According to its wikipedia page, "Misty" is a novel which is based on a real horse (also named Misty).

Hanover's Wishing Star by Nancy Caffrey? 1956

Hanover’s Wishing Star is a non-fiction story (illustrated with photos) of Karen Ann MacGuire, a twelve year old from Valhalla, NY who wants a horse very badly. When she learns that the racehorse Nashua and his stablemates are to be auctioned off, she writes to the bank in charge explaining that if there is any horse that no one else wants to buy, she would like to bid her savings of $24 03 on it! When Karen Ann's letter is received by the Hanover Bank, it so impresses their public relations man that he takes over her cause personally and ensures that she will get a horse.

Doesn't appear to have been a contest, but I can see getting that impression given that it generated press coverage.
