Denise Thomas | 4 comments Hi Everyone,
I found this group when my 21 year old daughter introduced me to GoodReads. It is great to know I am not alone or an old fuddy duddy. That even young people today want to read clean books. This group is an answer to my prayers.

Tracy | 75 comments Welcome new friends. So good to have you.

Denise, I am also glad you're not alone, and I prefer to think of you (and all of us) as having "old-fashioned values" instead of being fuddy duddies. :)

I love that we've created a group with similar values in a day of slippery slopes all around. We are finding ways to stand up and let our values be heard in whatever way we can - if for nothing else than to let the others of us out there know that their values are valued somewhere.

Thank you for letting us know that the group's an answer to your prayers. I feel the same way, and it's so touching to know that we're making a difference.

Welcome!
Tracy

joy *the clean-reader extraordinaire* (joytotheworld) | 98 comments Tracy wrote: " I prefer to think of you (and all of us) as having "old-fashioned values" instead of being fuddy duddies. ..."

on the contrary, i think "ye olde fuddy duddies" would make a lovely group name. i vote that we change it right away. do i hear a second? anyone?

but seriously -- "old-fashioned values"?? are there any other kind?? forgive my excessive punctuation, please, but transient moral standards or trendy ethical philosophies simply are not standards. a standard doesn't change. it is the standard. that's the point! in other words, i. am. not. old. fashioned.

message 54: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 75 comments Touche, Joy. Very good point.

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Well said, Joy!

I fine with calling myself and 'old fuddy-duddy'. After all I remember watching "Leave It To Beaver." And I don't mean reruns. :)

Also, if anyone lives in the Atlanta area, I'd love to meet you. I'm going to be at the Decatur Book Festival over this coming Labor Day Weekend, Sept 3-5, speaking and signing copies of ALLON.

message 57: by Becca (new)

Becca | 24 comments Hello, just joined after reading a lovely clean read by Eva Ibbotson and seeing this group at the bottom of the page and rejoicing.

I, too, am LDS and a SAHM. For years I've read the same authors over and over because I trust them and haven't wanted to venture out of my comfort zone because every time I have, it's ended badly. When I joined Goodreads I started getting fabulous recommendations, but was still running into D/S/A/L all the time and quite frankly, I'm sick of it. I love this group already!

Just one suggestion for the moderator: You should make this thread the static top thread so it stays there regardless of how often it's posted into. It's a great place for people to find out what this group is all about (not that the title of the group isn't a dead giveaway), but a little organization is always more welcoming.

message 58: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 75 comments Hi Becca! So glad you found us. I have felt the same way you described so often. I love your suggestion about organization for the group page. But I actually don't know how to do that. I just started the group because I felt a great need, and am not that familiar with the ins and outs of goodreads. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction? Once I'm in the right spot, I can figure it out from there, but I don't know where to even look.

Thanks again,
Tracy

message 59: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 75 comments Oh, never mind. I think I found it. :)

message 60: by Becca (new)

Becca | 24 comments Good because I have no idea where to look. I just know some of the other groups I'm apart of have an intro thread that never goes anywhere.

Donna (weegraydog) (weegraydog) Hi, I'm a new member. I was looking at the "Groups" page, and this was one of the featured groups on the right-hand side. It sounded like a great idea and not a group I had expected to find, and so I decided to join. I'm looking forward to getting some good recommendations from the group. Has anyone read, "The Other Boleyn Girl?" I enjoy historical fiction, but often stay away from reading best sellers because of language and content.

message 62: by Holly (new)

Holly Weiss (hollyweiss) Hi, Tracy,
I found your group just by browsing on Goodreads. I am sick of vampire books, books about abused women, and books loaded with violence. When I read, I want to relax. I'd like to become more involved here.

I am 59, married, have a disability and still work. Reading is a huge part of my life.

I do not know what etiquette is in this group, but I am an author and my book is PG. Is there somewhere I might post it so that your group would be aware of it? If that is not done, that's fine. I'm happy just to hear about your recommendations.
Thank you,
Holly

message 63: by Becca (new)

Becca | 24 comments Hey Donna, I read The Other Boleyn Girl and though the story was extremely interesting, the sexual content was pretty high on the scale along with gay content and a penchant for violence and women domination. I don't remember the language being too crude, but I wouldn't recommend it as a clean read at all.

Donna (weegraydog) (weegraydog) Hi, Becca:

Thanks for the input--good to know!

message 65: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 75 comments Welcome Donna and Holly. Glad to have you both.

Holly, you are welcome to post your book. We love to support and give props to authors who write with our standards in mind. I'll start up a new discussion for author recommendations. Thanks.

Tracy

Lindsay Belmont (lindsaybelmont) | 4 comments Hello! I am an LDS SAHM but actually just found you guys at the top of the groups page and thought it sounded right up my alley. I had no idea it was mostly LDS so that's a bonus! I have always loved to read and am always looking for clean reads. Thanks so much for providing this forum!

message 67: by Michele (new)

Michele Donna,
I also read the other boleyn girl and was disappointed. The author is obviously very talented and tells a good story, but I felt like she could have left out a lot of the sexual stuff.

message 68: by Becca (new)

Becca | 24 comments Totally agree Michele.

message 69: by Jeanne (last edited Sep 11, 2010 01:29AM) (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) | 0 comments Hi,

I found this group by the title. The title says it all.

Nine of us goodreads authors have just released a YA anthology with ten stories. There's no sex, drugs, alcohol, or overt violence, although one of the stories is about a female assassin. Would this disqualify our book as a clean read? I hope not.
We're pretty excited about our collection and will visit schools and libraries to do readings and answer questions.

The stories are linked by the theme of a key and they all have a moral point-of-view as well as being entertaining. My story, Unlocking William is about a boy in middle school who uses his considerable talent and energy to be annoying--and how it takes someone who cares and understands him to set him on a better path.

If you would like to read the stories on line, the download is free.

http://www.unlockedproject.com

or you can get a paper copy through Amazon.

We would love to have reviews or feedback from people who enjoy clean reads.

message 70: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 1 comments Hi! I found this group when Jeanne joined, as we are friends and it showed up in my friend feed. (Hi Jeanne!)

I'm Jaimey, one of the authors in the anthology (Unlocked) that Jeanne mentioned. (Incidentally, I'm the one that wrote the story about the female assassin.)

I'm a writer (Regency romance), SAHM of two, not LDS but always on the lookout for clean reading material.

I also co-moderate the Clean Romances group here on Goodreads.

This looks like a great group! :o)

message 71: by Karla (new)

Karla M (gracehepburn) | 1 comments I found the group by the title on Goodreads. Much of reading time has been spent pre-reading various materials for our home school cirriculum. I have some authors that I have learned to trust after reading several books, and will let my sons read them without pre-reading. However, this is becoming time consuming, so any help on clean books is always appreciated.

I am always looking good, clean and factual based historical fiction. I just finished a biography by John Dwyer on Stonewall Jackson. He has a gift for making the biography interestined with many details. He also takes the time to comment on the sense of duty to God and country Jackson, and many men of his time held dearly.

I value these types of qualities as this is something I hope to instill into my two sons.

I also appreciate Douglas Bond and GA Henty, but look for any othe recommendations.

Karla

message 72: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 20 comments Hi Tracey! I just found your group from a tip by a friend over on the Goodreads Clean Romances group. Sounds like we have similar goals, but your group is more broadly based, subject-wise, than ours. Clean Readers of the world, unite! :-)

If you'd like to take a look at our group, we're over at http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...

message 73: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) | 0 comments Hi Jaimey,

I'm so glad I found this group. I don't know what has happened to our U.S. culture. It seems that people have forgotten to appreciate subtlety.

Shakespeare's plays about wars confine most of the violence to 'off-stage' and Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a whole book about pirates without using a swear word. Yet, there's no doubt that the audience/readers know there are battles in some of Shakespeare's plays and rough tough pirates in Treasure Island.

BTW, for you homeschoolers (and people who supplement what the schools are doing) Treasure Island has a great vocabulary.

Anyway, I tutor students at home--so I'll be looking for clean book titles for middle-grade and young-adult readers. This includes using decent grammar too. I'm peeved at the writers who intentionally use bad grammar in kids' books.

Donna (weegraydog) (weegraydog) Thanks, Becca and Michele, for your input on my question. I'm glad I found this group! Re The Other Boleyn Girl, a friend told me, "A good read, but trashy." I'm 58, and I figure I don't want to spend time on "trashy." I thought I'd recommend www.listsofbests.com to the group. I've adopted a number of lists there, especially classics and mysteries that I'd like to work my way through, and even Newbery award winning books (children's literature). There are also a number of classic movie lists that I'm planning to work my way through. It helps me to set goals that I can work on. Happy reading! Donna L

message 75: by Holly (new)

Holly Weiss (hollyweiss) Donna, www.listsofbests.com looks like a great resource. Thanks for the tip!

Sarah Davis (keamymayloken) I found this just looking at groups on good reads and related so well to it I joined:)

message 77: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Murphy | 5 comments Lots of LDS ladies here! Woo-Hoo! I found the group when I went to my groups home page and it was one of the spotlighted groups. What a great idea!

message 78: by Tessa (new)

Tessa (tesswhite) Well, Robert Lewis Stevenson was writing a children's adventure novel during the 1800's and Shakespeare contains enough dirty jokes to make up for the lack of onstage violence.

message 79: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) | 0 comments Ah, but dirty jokes don't kill, and kids in the audience probably don't get them anyway.

message 80: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Larson | 1 comments I was searching thru the Goodreads groups for something "clean"! LOL So glad to have found this group & grateful that it lists some great books!! Thanks guys!! Hope to be a active part of the group!

message 81: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (curlykew28) | 8 comments I was just browsing through groups. I am fairly new to being very active on Good Reads. This site has some amazing stuff. This group jumped out at me. Like many have commented, I hate to start a book and find it containing too much language or explicit sex, etc. I guess it is how it is dealt with, whether I want to read it. Well, I am one that once started, have to finish a book. That is how I ended up reading The Reliable Wife. It wasn't completely useless, but I think there is a book I would have better benefitted from reading. So, now I will come here to get some opinions before starting a questionable book.

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

As an author, this group is an encouragement hearing from like-minds. At times I feel like a salmon swimming up stream in writing good-old fashion books like I used to read and want to pass along to kids.

I run across some kids and parents of the same mind-set at events, but few compared to the vast majority who either don't care what their kids read or willingly give them books with the excuse of 'expanding' their world view.

message 83: by Marti (new)

Marti Talbott (martitalbott) | 7 comments To tell the truth, I did not know there was a category for clean romance until lately, so when I first came to Good Reads, I looked for you. Glad I found you.

Marti

message 84: by Diane (new)

Diane Daniels | 3 comments I was directed here by another clean romance group. And yes, I've read my share of vampire books. However, when I sent my now published "Over the Moon" YA fantasy romance to publishers,my cover letter said, "Aren't you sick of vampires?" My goal is to bring YA romantic fantasies into the "light." I am also LDS, but my publisher is "Born Again Christian." I sent it to them because they wanted clean and I can only write clean. I also try to read clean and I read a lot so this group's recommendations will be well received.

Robert Marda (RobertMarda) | 1 comments I created a thread on Kindlebooks.com asking for help finding books with no swearing and no sex scenes and Thalia the Muse told me about your group.

I am Robert. I prefer science fiction and fantasy books but am looking to start reading other genre's too.

Applekinzz I was looking through some groups here in Goodreads and I saw this one! Soo, I joined! ^_^

message 90: by Pam (new)

Pam Nelson | 1 comments Tracy, Elizabeth Terry Heward is my ancestor too! I did a google search for her name and found this site. Pretty cool

message 91: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 75 comments That is SO cool Pam! So hi then, cousin! We actually named our last baby, now 1, Hannah Elizabeth. We chose Hannah as a name we love before we even realized that that was Elizabeth's mom's name. We love having that connection with Grandma Elizabeth.

Anyway, welcome to the group!

message 92: by Lakoko (last edited Jan 26, 2011 12:34PM) (new)

Lakoko | 3 comments Hi there! I found this group by searching for it. I'm a high school student, and I read quite a bit, about a book a day. Even in the YA section, many of the books are not clean, and I can't tell the difference till it is halfway through and painful to tear myself away from because of language. I hate not being ablt to finsih books, and I'm hoping this group will help. I'm afraid to pick up books from the adult section, though there is more variety, I've had bad experiences.

message 93: by Anna (new)

Anna del C. Dye | 29 comments Lakoko, I understand what you said. When my kids were teens I wondered of some of the books that where in the list their teachers give them. Then I look in the library and it wan't much for them either.
Now a few years latter a burst of good reading for teens has surfaces and I am glad to be part of it. (I know many clean authors)

As a Young Adult author myself I am proud to said that my books are clean, because I know that they are tons of young adults that do care what they read.

My hat off to you and to all the young people who stand for their believes.

If you check my book list in goodreads you should find many authors that fit your bill. Take time to read my reviews and it will tell you if you should trust the author. Or send me a note.

I can remember how I found the group but I am glad I did.

Tracy | 75 comments Welcome Lakoko! What you said sounds so familiar. That's the whole reason I started this group. I just put another book down halfway through today. Didn't check here first. That'll teach me... I hope you find a lot of help here, and look forward to your input as well.

I kind of stumbled upon this group too. It's getting harder and harder to find G/PG rated books. Although, Avalon Books (which is primarily a library book publisher) publishes a lot of nice clean stories in various genres. :)
