message 451: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Please also be careful to not delete old books. I've noticed several of my manually added pre-ISBN books, often with covers have been deleted. I'll come upon a book on my shelves and my edition is gone, and it had often been shelved by multiple members.

message 454: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I got them Eva. Thanks. It would be easier to have the link to the book page than the link to the edit book page though. It's harder from the edit page to see that those editions are already combined with others, etc. Thanks.

message 456: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Hmm. Well, there's no ISBN but it seems to be a specific edition:

published 2004 (first published 1933) by Wordsworth Editions Limited

Yes, about old books, I did find information in the manual (the ISBN section).

My doubt was more about placeholders for books not yet released. The manual didn't say much one way or another so Jessica's reply really cleared that up for me.

In my comment, I should probably have used "modern books" instead of "new books" to make clear that I wasn't referring to the time a book was added to GR but to its release date.

Thanks.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Chichipio, That message of mine was sent out to everyone; I wasn't singling you out at all. Your message just reminded me to post. Of course, where I posted in this thread it probably won't be seen by most of the members who should read it. Thanks.

I think I found the matching edition. Merging now.

message 460: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 963 comments I don't need anything deleted, but I'm too lazy to create a new thread. I'm trying to fix something with a goodreads author, but I can't. I think a super can.

Do a search for "mad girls in love west" and you'll see two entries that need to be fixed. One with a comma and the other needs the authors middle name.

message 461: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 963 comments This does need to be deleted though :)

Got both.

FYI, the second West book just needed the specific book edited, and that any librarian can do. (Most of the books by that author are really by another no-middle-name author, so just editing the author would have been bad.)

And the "this author needs help" thread would have worked. ;)

message 463: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 963 comments Oh, duh, forgot about that thread. I tried to just edit the author name within the book edit, but it wouldn't let me for some reason (I wouldn't have done the one lacking the middle name by editing the full author unless I knew all of the books filed under that author was the one I wanted to change it to).

I'm not sure why it wouldn't let me do that actually. Very strange.

Jessica wrote: "I'm not sure why it wouldn't let me do that actually. Very strange."

Indeed. Did you get an error message?

message 465: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 963 comments Basically it said that this was a Goodreads author and that they are in charge of their own editing.

message 466: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Hmm. That should only come up if you're editing the author's profile page, not an individual book.

message 467: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 963 comments That's what I thought too. Maybe it's a bug.

Thanks Lisa - I didn't think about that. I only had one screen up and was going back and forth! I will remember that though!

If it happens again, could you pretty please get a screenshot and send it to support AT goodreads DOT com? (With an explanation, or at least a note that it's regarding the issue you discussed with me.)

Aren't The Pilot's Wife and When They Last Met two different books? Am I wrong or seeing this wrong or did someone combine the two by mistake? I don't mind separating but I wanted confirmation.... :)

Eva, they do seem to be different books, probably combined by accident. I'll wait to delete the previous book until you have them separated out again, so that it doesn't merge into the wrong one!

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Was Meyer's Twilight published for the first time in 1388?

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41...

message 480: by Jesse (last edited Nov 13, 2009 05:21PM) (new)

Jesse Dixon | 24 comments I've fixed it. It was first published in 2005. It's strange but I fixed the date of the Outsider / The Stranger a month ago that said it was originally published in 1388.

message 481: by Dori (new)

Dori (adorible) | 196 comments It looks like when this edition was merged, it had the wrong publication date (here is the change log for that edition). I don't even know what year it was first published...

message 482: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Well, it looks as though Twilight was published in 2005. What's wrong with the date? They all say original publication date is 2005 and this edition shows a 2005 publication date; I don't know if the date for this edition is correct, as translations sometimes come out in later years, but what do you see Dori that arouses your suspicion?

message 483: by Eva-Marie (last edited Nov 13, 2009 06:49PM) (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Thanks guys - I wasn't sure if I was going crazy or what. I was fairly positive that the Meyers craze was pretty new..... lol

I don't know that this has anything to do with the 1388 but I deleted a few editions that shouldn't have been added and that was listed as the original date on those too. Maybe someone added a listing, didn't know what to put and they put whatever came to mind?

message 484: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Eva, Some of the Persian editions of books do show up with those early dates. I'm sure I should know the reason but I don't remember why this happens.

message 485: by Cait (new)

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Lisa wrote: "Eva, Some of the Persian editions of books do show up with those early dates. I'm sure I should know the reason but I don't remember why this happens."

It's because that's the year according to the Iranian calendar. :) GR uses a Gregorian calendar, but there are a handful of other systems in use -- the Hebrew calendar is another one we see from time to time -- and their years don't match to the Gregorian years. (All of the dates in the GR system should be converted to Gregorian for this reason!)

message 486: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Thanks, Cait. Of course.

message 487: by Jesse (new)

Jesse Dixon | 24 comments This edition is without an ISBN with incomplete information and needs to be deleted, but I cannot do it because it has 5 ratings. I've already combined it with the correct edition.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Jude,

Re your message 501. No:

The first one is already designated as NOT A BOOK. It has an ISBN and should not be deleted, or is it not listed at Amazon at all?

The second one has an ISBN and appears to be a book. I'll change the author name to the proper name. Edit: Which I did and then combined it with the other editions.

Sorry, Lisa, I wasn't online over the weekend. If you scroll down the librarian change log for that edition, the publication year was set to 1388 at the time it was merged, so the original publication date for all editions would have been set at that time. Someone changed the publication year to 2005 afterward, but didn't update the original publication date for all editions until right before I posted originally.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27...

It got uploaded as an ASIN by amazon, even thought it's clearly an ISBN, and when you switch it, it says that the ISBN is already taken (which, it is, by the correct book). Long way of saying it's a duplicate :D
