Heather (bruyere) Tracey, how far are you into the tv show? I'm still just on 4th.

I finished about a week ago. I don't think it was as good as it could have been.

message 403: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) I liked it despite some flaws. Planning to read the book soon.

Currently reading A Betrayal in Winter.

Silvana (silvaubrey) This thread is actually for non-grimdark but now I am thinking we should have a special thread for that :))

Heather (bruyere) I'm reading a thriller, The Boys from Brazil, which is very unusual for me. Very exciting read so far.

Igor Ljubuncic (igorljubuncic) | 28 comments I believe I have a fairly varied taste:

Military history, ordinary history, adventure/action, thrillers, spy stuff, sci-fi, mythology, other types of fantasy - but unless they're character-driver, I usually find them boring.

message 412: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Igor, what kind of military history do you enjoy? any particular period or historical figure?

I am currently reading The Devourers by Indra Das. I think my next grimdark would only be read in May :(

Al Burke (alburke47) | 21 comments Listening to Rebirth by Aaron Hodges. Pretty good sci-fi/superhero story.

Igor Ljubuncic (igorljubuncic) | 28 comments Silvana, I like mostly post-wwi stuff, with focus on wwii onwards. I've read quite a few very interesting books lately:

-The Battle of the Tanks: Kursk, 1943
-Six Days: How the 1967 War Shaped the Middle East
-Exocet Falklands: The Untold Story of Special Forces Operations
-Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe Airport, the Most Audacious Hostage Rescue Mission in History
-Black Hawk Down
-Bravo Two Zero
-Code Warriors: NSA's Code Breakers and the Secret Intelligence War Against the Soviet Union
-Hunting Hitler's Nukes

I'm now reading on the Russian Air Force, SAS Nazi Hunters, and Libya (from ancient times to the recent war and the toppling of Qaddafi).

Take a look at my 2017/8 reading challenge, if you like, or my shelves for the reviews on all these, if you're interested.

A bit difficult to look at your shelves as they are based on authors not subjects. Anyway, I used to specialize my warfare reads on WWII - having read Stephen Ambrose's books, which opened the floodgate for me. Lately my military history taste has been more diversified...

Any recommended book for naval warfare? Ancient/modern/contemporary is okay.

Stephen Budiansky has a couple:

The Falklands War I mentioned in the previous post is also a very good one.

I'm currently listening to Obsidio, the series is the best YA I've seen in a while! Also reading Lips Touch: Three Times, I've heard good things about this author.

Al Burke (alburke47) | 21 comments Just finished Bridgers by Stan C Smith. 'twas a good read. Now on to Vega: Orc Slayer by James Patrick.

Igor Ljubuncic (igorljubuncic) | 28 comments Reading "Ian Fleming's Commandos." Well, the dude was mental, to say the least. James Bond isn't that much fiction - except the punny names and bad 60s gadgets.

I just read my first Fleming book last month. I enjoyed it more than I expected! His writing was actually pretty good. But you have to endure the inherent sexism of course.

More grimpunk 😉

message 429: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Grimpunk? LOL

I wish Empire of Ashes is good. Ryan's Queen of Fire was not satisfactory as a trilogy final book so I hope this one is not another dud.

I read Blood Song and really enjoyed it. I looked at the reviews for Tower Lord and Queen of Fire and saw a lot of bad reviews. So the reviews were true?

message 432: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) I think Tower Lord is good, with some flaws. The Queen of Fire not so much. Actually I recommend everyone to read Blood Song and then stop. The novel is really good on its own. Well since I have one book left I will still read Empire when I get a better price for the ebook.

I enjoyed all 3 books in the series, but I can understand why a lot of readers hated the way it was ended by the author.

I also read all three and enjoyed all of them. The second had multiple POVs , and the third was multiple battle strategies from our main characters. I love reading fantasy battles, but I could be in the minority. Just my opinion, but those differences from book one, could of led to the poor reviews.

message 435: by Coby (new)

Coby Heitz | 16 comments Interesting. You are all making a strong case in favor of me giving the rest of the series a go. I see Queen of Fire second hand all the time. I suppose it won’t hurt to give them a chance.

I like magical realism, need to read more of those :)

I've been a big fan of Wells since I was kid. I've read some of his classics multiple times. Now trying to get my son into them.
