I read this in middle school so probably early nineties but it could have been an earlier publication.

It's about this boy from the Bowery who is all hot to get into the Civil War and he gets in as a drummer boy. During his first battle he gets scared and runs and hides in an old looking shed that is owned by an elderly lady. I think in the mountains like Ozarks out Appalachian mountains. He's definitely a Yankee in Southern territory.

She takes him in and promises not to turn him in for helping her with chores and stuff like that. She doesn't call him by his name but calls him Boy. I think his name is Charley. They become pretty close but i can't remember the end. I feel like the title had something about drumming in it but i can't remember.

I'd really like my son to read it if i can find it. Thanks in advance!
