Adding subgenres to genres

I was wondering if there was any way to add a genre as a subgenre to another topic. For example, the https://www.goodreads.com/genres/batt... Battle of Gettysburg genre can be grouped under the https://www.goodreads.com/genres/amer... American Civil War genre, along with any other battles/campaigns/etc shelves that other people create.

To my knowledge, genres on GR are determined by how the people using GR shelve their books. Librarians have no input into this process.
