I read this book about a group of young children who were given a set of puzzles to solve to keep them occupied. Each puzzle led to the next until they got to the prize at the end. I'm pretty sure it was a series, but the only one I recall has the three(?) children visiting a relative and playing with a 19th century era Native American headdress from an old trunk. The girl grabbed at her brother and inadvertantly pulled a feather out of the headdress, revealing a secret message on a piece of paper rolled up in the quill hole. Turns out that their great-grandfather left a series of puzzles for his children to keep them occupied while he was away at the Civil War. Unfortunately, the clue he gave them got accidentally left in a pocket and destroyed in the wash and he died before he could return. The children in the book did eventually solve the puzzles and get the treasures he had hidden for their grand-ancestors.

Google leads me to "Key to the Treasure" (Liza, Bill and Jed Mysteries) by Peggy Parish. First published in 1966 it was recently re-released, so you should be able to find a recent copy without a problem
The more recent edition is here:
And here's a detailed review with the relevant plot points:

Yes, Key to the Treasure by Peggy Parish looks very promising.
I didn't see Marilyn's suggestion above, but came across the same book. The book contains these words (based on a quick search using Amazon's Look Inside): puzzle, great-grandfather, civil war, black feather, Indians, code. There's a picture of a boy wearing a feather headdress.
