Jenny (pagelady) Help me understand. What is the A-Z Folder? The instructions say to list the book in the appropriate A-Z folder thread. I don't understand what that means. Thanks!

message 2: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) I think they will make this folder closer to the time the challenge starts because they don't want people starting too soon.

message 3: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (pagelady) Okay, gotcha.

Last year we used the weekly discussion folders but a few members suggested A-Z folders so that all the discussion for each book would be in the same place.

We're asking that people don't create the topics too far in advance. So the suggested time frame is to create the topic no more than 2-3 books ahead of when you actually read it. Assuming there isn't already a topic created.

When you click "new topic", the drop down menu already contains all the A-Z folders. They just won't appear until people start posting the topics at the start of the challenge.

I hope that helps!

Jenny (pagelady) Will the moderators create a topic called "A" to put all the "A" books under? Like you did the "2016 Plans"? And another topic called "B"?

message 6: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments The A-Z folders are already all done, you can see them when creating a new topic.
For example, A is there: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Jenny (pagelady) Gosh, I finally found them!! Go to Discussions, click Start a New Topic, and then click on the Folder options to find the A-Z listed. Yay!!

EllenZReads | 172 comments I added my books to the appropriate folders...I think. If I messed up, let me know and I'll try to repost.

message 9: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Ellen, I just moved Les Mis (Les=The, so it should be put at M). Don't forget to add the author in the title, it's easier to be sure it's the right book without opening the thread :)

message 10: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Is it ok if I create posts for books I'm reading now for the 2016 Popsugar challenge? They're not technically for our challenge nor am I reading them in 2016, so I just wanted to check ;)

message 11: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Jeez, we are already in 2016? I didn't know! :D
You can post the books when you are currently reading them (or have finished if you're already in July 2016 :p), priority to the group challenge :)

Darn, knew I was going to mess it up. Sorry!

Stephanie (teff1979) I am a little confused with the a-z list. this it for the books we are reading for the 52 week challenge

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Stephanie,

I'll try to help if you will tell me what is confusing you. Basically what we're doing is adding the books we're reading via title in the A-Z folders. So if you're reading Twilight you'd create a new topic (if none already existed for this book) in the T folder as the following: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Then you can tell us what you're reading, why you're reading, what week, etc. and others will be able to join the discussion.

These should be the books you're reading for this challenge.

Ok so basically I was right then. It is only for the books for the 52 week challenge.

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Stephanie... and everyone else who was asking/curious about this (it has been brought up a couple of times):

We mods have discussed it and we don't have any issue with you guys posting books in the A-Z folders for other challenges you're doing in tandem with the Around the Year challenge. The more books, the more discussion, the more bookish fun for everyone.

We do, however, ask that you please (please, please, please) note if the book is for another challenge when you add it.

EXAMPLE:
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I read this for the PopSugar challenge, a book with a blue cover...

Our intention is to put all the books that you guys have read for the Around the Year challenge onto the group bookshelves so that we can have a visual account of what we've all read for the year when we're all done with 2016. We'd like to keep that separate from the side challenges and it will be THAT much easier for us, as mods, if we can see which books are separate from the main challenge. I hope that makes sense. But if you have questions, as always, let us know. We are here to help.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Dully noted, thank you mods!

For books that start with a number (eg. 1984), should we add them in the "phonetic" folder (eg. N) or would it be an idea to add a # folder?

message 18: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I don't think we'll have plenty of numbers so you can add it in the N folder. In GR, it has both the letters name and the number one :)
Nineteen Eighty-Four

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Ok thanks!

message 20: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I just noticed we don't have a "Q" or "Z" folder. Was that due to the chance that there would be few books in these folders? As far as I can think I don't have any need for them, I just happened to notice them as I was going through each folder trying to catch up on conversations.

message 21: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments They don't appear because there are no topics in them, but they are in the list when you create a new topic ;)

That makes a lot of sense. I guess I just figured that they showed up regardless of there being items in it or not. Thanks for explaining that :)

message 23: by Angela (new)

Angela | 389 comments Hi - just a really simple question, are we still using the A-Z folders for the 2017 challenge as well as the 2016 challenge? If so, should we state that the book we're reading is for Week 1 of the 2017 challenge?

Thanks!

message 24: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Yes, we're using the same folders, it's nicer to continue discussions rather than to comment several times about the same thing. If you put the full category, it's fine, if you just put the number, it's better to say it's for 2017 :)

message 25: by Angela (new)

Angela | 389 comments Thanks Zaz, happy reading.

message 26: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 80 comments I have been posting my ATY books to the numbered subject post that they fit. Am I supposed to also post the book in the A-Z folders? Also, are all books for the ATY challenge to be added to the mapping post? I am new to the group and am a bit confused with all this.

Those are all options but it's totally up to you which features you want to use. I'll be honest, I typically post in the A-Z folders and not the progress posts. Some do it the other way around or they post in both. There's also the Group Author Map, Group Reading Timeline, and Group Reading Map. If you click on the thread for those features then the first post will contain more details about how they work.

The only thing that we ask is that you check whether or not there is an existing A-Z discussion thread for a book before creating a new one. You can use the search bar on the right and then choose "only topics" to filter it to book title.
