Alec I wanted to start a discussion about dialogue and tone of the characters in this book.

Alec On page 16, the the first raven is scared for the new king and queen-to-be. The raven says, "'Good God,that's horrible!' said the first raven, 'is there nothing anyone can do?'". In this dialogue the raven sounds scared because of what another raven had said. You can also tell that he is scared because he is sort of yelling this out, the reader can tell by the exclamation point.

Alec On page 46 the 'not witch baker lady that likes to eat children' is trying to find out whether the oven is hot enough to cook Gretel. She put Hansel in first to make sure the oven was warm enough to cook children she huffed, "'Not hot enough in there!'". You can see she is getting angry and she doesn't like the fact that it is taking the oven so long to heat up (even though it was already plenty warm). You can also see she is angry and yelling by the exclamation point. This impacts my impression about the baker lady because this tells me that she has a short temper.

Alec On page 66 there are the seven brothers who's father turns them into seven swallows. Hansel and Gretel adventured for months to get to the mountain the star told them the brothers would be on. When Gretel takes off her finger to open the lock, the swallows don't turn into humans until Gretel says that their mother and father miss them, "'He misses us?' the littlest one asked...". In this dialogue you can hear the surprise in their voice. You can hear how sad they were before and that is beginning to change. This dialogue shows how they didn't think their father loved them because first of all he wished them into birds and second of all, all the father ever wanted was a daughter and he had seven sons.

Alec Hansel and Gretel settle into the forest where a tree allows them as long as they don't take more then they need. Hansel can't help hunting animals and when he first catches a bunny Gretel gets very upset with him. She made him promise not to hunt animals anymore because they do not need them. On page 76 Gretel cries, "'What have you done?!'". This shows that she actually wants to live a good life whether and she cares for the health of the forest.

Alec Gretel is on her own now and she found a decent place to live. She lives with a large group of people and has a crush on a guy there. The widow, the person in charge is preventing her from going to the man's house. She goes anyway. Gretel sees the guys mother, chained and making soup out of girls bodies the were chopped up by the man who turned out to be a murderer. The mother says, "Go my dear!' she hissed at Gretel. 'runaway and never come back!'" You can tell she is in a rush because she the man will be coming back soon and the woman didn't want anyone else's soul to be ripped out. She was also talking fast before. This shows she cares about people and their safety.

Alec The day after Gretel came back from the handsome man's house she decided to say something at the table while they were eating. Gretel told her story about when she was at his house and had a hand with a ring with, "rubies red as can be" on it. While she was telling her story she was repeating, "'It was just a dream'". She was saying over and over again through her story, especially at the worst parts. This made it seem like she was trying to convince herself that it wasn't real, because she didn't want to admit that she witnessed something so disturbing.

Alec A while after Hansel is hunted down the hunters present what they had caught to a lot people. Before they began skinning the "beast", they gave a small speech. They were saying a lot of things like, "'Ladies and gentlemen!' he said--I present to you the worst hunt--and the best--that I have ever had. The fewest creatures! But the best prize!'". From this you can tell he likes to brag about everything he has accomplished, whether the people care or don't care. Later on he brags even more about how he hunted it down. This reveals that his personality has a lot of bragging in it.

Alec I'm at the part of the book where Hansel has to go to Hell for eternity. From Hansel's dialogue I can tell he is nervous. First of all because he is GOING TO HELL and because when the "old man tells him what to do he says, "'I will' but he wasn't sure he believed it". It sounds like he he is trying to convince himself that he will get out of jail even though he is pretty sure he won't.

message 10: by Alec (new) - added it

Alec When Hansel is in Hell he sees the baker lady. At first he is thinking "punish her". When he sees her face out of the hotness of the boiling fire he feels bad for her. He says, "'please,' he said. 'I've forgiven her. Stop punishing her now.'" This shows that Hansel has feelings and is VERY forgiving even though he killed her and ate her house at one one point and she tried to cook and eat him.

Alec The Devil comes home and Hansel is dressed as his grandmother. Hansel is cooking human flesh, as food for him (dressed as the devil's grandmother) and the Devil. When the Devil and Hansel are ready to eat the Devil asks what is this. When he finds out it was leftovers from the day before he says, "'Ugh! I hate leftovers!'" This reveals the Devils personality. It shows how anyone can be obnoxious and childish, like him, and he OWNS HELL!!!

Alec After Hansel escapes Hell, he is helped Faithful Johannes. Hansel does not actually know who it is though and he begins questioning how the old man knows so much about him. "'And how did you know I ran away?'" In this conversation it seems like Hansel is starting to talk slower and slower, trying to figure out why and how he knows so much about Hansel. Hansel is beginning to be suspicious of the "old man".
