Emily (ghejrc) | 10 comments I believe I read this book in 2006/2007 but it was from the library so it's
probably older than that.

The main character lived with their drunkard father in the woods near a
village. The house was surrounded by a river and only accessible by bridge
to deter the vampire-like creatures (they wouldn't cross running water). I don't believe the word vampire was actually ever used but they were nocturnal and preyed on the living however they were also pretty primitive (no suave Dracula-esque vampires here).

The villagers wrapped their dead in nets so that they had to unpick all the knots before rising at night. They dropped seeds on the floor because the creatures were compelled to count every last one before moving on. To find out if a body was going to rise, a virgin had to ride a horse over the grave...bad news if the horse refused.

I remember there were also some gypsies/travellers involved too but I can't
remember why.

In terms of genre I feel like it'd fit more into horror than fantasy although that may just be because I was young when I read it and it scared me.

At the end of the version I read there was the first chapter of the next
book so I know there's at least one sequel...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Emily (ghejrc) | 10 comments Hmm no, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the word 'vampire' wasn't actually used, even in the title. Also, I should have maybe mentioned that it was set in our world as we know it, as far as I can remember.

Thank you anyway...I may end up reading that book, it sounds pretty good!
