Regarding option 3, when you say embedded do you mean when it says "science > biology"? Unsure what embedded means. Thanks for your help! :)
and when you say "shelved" this is different to the "main page genre", right?eg The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals is on the ecology list, and has 59 people shelved it as ecology on the "top shelves" page, but it's not on the main page genre list... would that be OK?
kiki wrote: "Regarding option 3, when you say embedded do you mean when it says "science > biology"? Unsure what embedded means. Thanks for your help! :)"That's exactly it. :)

Right. They just need to be shelved by at least 3 people that way and show up on the popular books.
Does that make sense alright?
To clarify and make sure I am looking at this right......as of right now there are only like 25 books on the zoology list that we can choose from and all of them are on the first page...right? The majority of the books on this list have been shelved less than 3 times so they can't be used.

I just wanted to make sure I understood what we were looking for. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations of books that are on these lists that you have read and enjoyed? I browsed through them and to be honest have only seen/heard of a couple of them.

"I can't recommend the first on the list enough. Last Chance to See is written by Douglas Adams, the author of Hitchhiker's Galaxy series. His observations about the animals he sees isn't nearly as funny as the humans he interacts with. Totally cynical, dry British wit.
You can never go wrong with Gerald Durrell either. I haven't actually read the one on this list, but I'm thinking of maybe making it my read for this challenge. My GR friends that have read this one all give it 4 or 5 stars.
I also can't help but plug The Selfish Gene. In my opinion it's as important a text as The Origins of Species. Plus, you get to learn where the term meme came from that everyone bandies around all the time (and you see SO many of them in GR reviews too).
I do wish the nonfiction readers on GR were as good and diligent about shelving their books as other genres. Writing this challenge has made me realize I need to organize my reads a bit better to try to help with that. :)

I think I am going to see if I can get the Gerald Durrell book from the library :)
I read more fiction than non-fiction but from time to time don't mind a non-fiction book. I probably should shelve my non-fiction reads better also,as well as explore more into the different genres of non-fiction :)
Looking to lock these in:Biology: Last Chance to See
Science > Biology 44 users
Gorillas in the Mist 3x listed zoology

I don't think I can lock in categories. Those need to be done in the special thread. :) I loved that book though, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Daphne, as a task creator, you have the right to verify genres. You are correct that there is a special thread, but the task creator also has that right.
Daphne wrote: "Correct. The last book listed with 3 shelved right now is My Family And Other Animals. "This has been on my TBR list for a while. Presumably as its on the list with 3 shelvings it's okay - even though it doesn't have zoology as a main page genre?

Locked in.
Trish wrote: "This has been on my TBR list for a while. Presumably as its on the list with 3 shelvings it's okay - even though it doesn't have zoology as a main page genre? "Correct. Does not have to be on main page. That's why I used the list because it's easier to see the books in order of how many times they've been shelved.

I usually read fiction but I've found so many interesting books already looking for this task! Can you verify the Biology genre for The God Delusion?
Maddie wrote: "I usually read fiction but I've found so many interesting books already looking for this task! Can you verify the Biology genre for The God Delusion?"
Genre verified.
It makes me SO happy to read this Maddie! I'm a preferred non fiction reader, so I love these challenges because they force me to explore other types of books. Glad to see I get to return the favor to a fiction reader. :)
I look forward to seeing what books you settle on with this challenge.
Could I use Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers for Opt 3 Biology and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales for Opt 4 Neurology - found on page 1 of the list?
Can you lock in that Through a Window: My Thirty Years with the Chimpanzees of Gombe works - right now shelved 3x as "zoology"?Thanks!

Yup. :) I hope you enjoy it!

Was it there when you posted it? I didn't get the ping that you posted here, so I'm sorry that I'm just seeing this.
The Man Who Mistook His Wife will definitely work for Neurology!
KSMary wrote: "Yes, when I just pulled it up Science>Biology is on the first page with 69 Users"I see if now too. I was only getting 5 options on the main page this morning. Stiff is approved for >Biology! :)

Those both work and are approved. :)

Thanks!
Could you approve the following for "Neurology" -- from the list: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. Thanks!
Erin (NY) wrote: "Could you approve the following for "Neurology" -- from the list: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. Thanks!"I see it's been shelved neurology 6 times, so it works. :)
So, will message 10 serve as confirmation that My Family and Other Animals had been shelved 3x as zoology? I was following this thread in Nov. and that was my book. But it now has lost one of its zoology shelves and is down to two. If not, could I please lock in The Rhino with Glue-On Shoes: And Other Surprising True Stories of Zoo Vets and their Patients as being shelved 3x as zoology?
Cindy wrote: "So, will message 10 serve as confirmation that My Family and Other Animals had been shelved 3x as zoology? I was following this thread in Nov. and that was my book. Yes I love The Flight of the Iguana: A Sidelong View of Science and Nature, one of my all time favourites. I'm hoping this one is half as good.
Can you please verify the biology genre for Zoobiquity: The Astonishing Connection Between Human and Animal Health?
It is on the very bottom.
Donna wrote: "Can you please verify the biology genre for Zoobiquity: The Astonishing Connection Between Human and Animal Health?"
That works :)
I'd like to get this verified by post since there's only 3 people who have shelved it and I don't want to lose it before I can finishFor ecology : Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation by Michael Pollan
It's on page 6 of the link that you posted.
Please and thanks!

I've always been fascinated by the world around me. There is little I don't find interesting when it comes to history and science. For me, I read sometimes for escape and sometimes for a better understanding of myself and place in the world. My problem in school though was that I could never settle on just one subject.
This is a 2 book, non-fiction challenge. Choose 2 different options from the choices below.
No books with the main page genre childrens or kids may be used for this task.
1. Ecology - This branch of science studies the environment and the animals that live in it. For this option, read a non-fiction book that has been shelved at least 3 times as ecology from this list: Popular Ecology Books.

2. Geology - The study of the earth and its history. For this option, read a non-fiction book that has been shelved at least 3 times as geology from this list: Popular Geology Books

3. Biology - is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. For this option, read a non-fiction book with the main page genre of "Biology." Biology can be embedded or stand alone.
