Zaz | 2969 comments Week 9 will be a nice way to discover a book mentioned in other books.
For those reading in order: February 26- March 3, 2016.

Suggestions for this week: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
To discuss the book, don't forget to add it in the A-Z folders or join the existing discussion.

I had a hard time with this so here's some help:

A list from yahoo answers:https://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...

A list of books mentioned in Wild: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/wild/...

I'm doing this with books I've read, but someone recommended Reading Lolita in Tehran, which I have never read.

I'm planning to read Awakening from Wild. As much as I hated that book (I'm a hiker so her lack of responsibility annoyed me)- I really liked how she brought in books. And I've always wanted to read this book!

I doubt I will change to something from my week 7 book because it's about the bible and don't want to read that in a week.

Julia (_mj_howard) Lunch in Paris A Love Story, with Recipes by Elizabeth Bard

I've had a fascination with books involving Paris, and this book was in "Paris Letters" by Janice MacLeod which I read last year.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments What are you reading this week? Middlemarch by George Eliot.
Did you use a book from your week 7 book? No, but I did choose this as it was mentioned in The Age of Innocence, which I read while I was planning my books for the challenge.
What do you think about book references in a book? Strangely, I'm not that fussed. Maybe it's a bit too 'meta' for me! I kind of prefer my books to be little vacuums, I suppose.

message 8: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments What are you reading this week?
Little Women
Little Women (Little Women, #1) by Louisa May Alcott

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
Nope. I read The Lady and Her Monsters: A Tale of Dissections, Real-Life Dr. Frankensteins, and the Creation of Mary Shelley's Masterpiece for week 7. Not even close to Little Women :)

What do you think about book references in a book?
I like it. There are some books that I think they overkill the book references, but I thoroughly enjoy it when it's appropriate.

message 9: by L (new)

L | 127 comments What are you reading this week? Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy - this could easily have gone in my 'a book by an author I should have read by now' category too as somehow I have managed to never read a Hardy until now.

Did you use a book from your week 7 book? Not that I know of, because I haven't read my week 7 book yet! I found it on an online list of "books that appear in other books" but I haven't been able to find that list since. However I did subsequently find out that Tess is referenced in Fifty Shades of Grey (which I also haven't read, mainly because my Mother-in-Law said we could talk about 50 Shades once I had read it, so there is no way I am going to do that!!!)

What do you think about book references in a book? I like recognising names / characters / storylines mentioned in another story, although obviously if a reference is very subtle it is entirely possible that I have missed many references where I haven't read the other book.

message 10: by Elise (new)

Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | -7 comments * What are you reading this week?

I'm reading The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe , which is mentioned in Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen ... and causes the heroine Catherine Morland's imagination to run wild and get her into an awkward situation...

* Did you use a book from your Week 7 book?

No - I haven't finished my week 7 book yet (The Name of the Rose ) but I can't imagine a reference is going to pop up!

* What do you think about book references in a book?

I actually stopped on a page in The Name of the Rose last night, which was talking about books referencing other books. I'm finding the book a bit hard reading due to a lot of philosophy and religion, but then I got to this, and it stopped me:

"Now I realised that not infrequently books speak of books: it is as if they spoke among themselves. In the light of this reflection, the library seemed all the more disturbing to me. It was then the place of a long, centuries-old murmuring, an imperceptible dialogue between one parchment and another, a living thing, a receptacle of powers not to be ruled by a human mind, a treasure of secrets emanated by many minds, surviving the death of those who had produced them or had been their conveyors."

That just sums up why I love books. Does anyone else feel like that?

I just read my first Hardy (Jude the Obscure) and I loved it, despite it being the most depressing book I have ever read in my entire life. Tess has always been pushed down my list by other books, but now I think I'll have to move her up again, if Jude is anything to go by!

message 12: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments What are you reading this week?
Jane Eyre

Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No, it was mentioned in a side read, Orphan Train. All of the books mentioned were books about orphans. I had already read Anne of Green Gables but wished to continue the orphan theme. It also fits in the Gilmore challenge which I have decided to work on.

What do you think about book references in a book?
Characters mentioning books gives the read insight into the persons thoughts. It can reinforce a theme in the book, like that of Orphan Train and add more texture to the book that you are reading. I some times pick up the books mentioned, it can give me a better understanding of the authors meaning and extend my enjoyment of the original book.

Rumpelstiltskin by Paul O. Zelinsky

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
Yes. My 1st choice was from a list but with my book 7 focused on fairytales retellings, I was really curious to discover this story, so I switched to this picture book.

- What do you think about book references in a book?
I enjoy when they are light, leaving me curious about them when I don't know the books or feeling like I'm a part of a private joke when I recognize them.

Amber | 23 comments What are you reading this week? I'm reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen . It has been on my reading list forever and I figured this was a good one since it has been mentioned in so many different books

Did you use a book from your week 7 book? I haven't read my week 7 book yet so I am not sure

What do you think about book references in a book? I don't really have a feeling for them one way or another. I do like it when I come across an obscure book that is mentioned that I have read. It sort of connects me to the book more

message 18: by Elise (new)

Elise (theblackhorizon) I'm reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In A Faraway Nearby, which I read last year, Rebecca Solnit discusses Frankenstein's ice imagery and the theme of creator as parent. Frankenstein was already on my TBR, but Solnit's essay made me really want to read it.

- What do you think about book references in a book? Not really fussed. Its interesting to read character's thoughts on a book, but usually it's a book I haven't read, so either it gives it away or I don't understand what the reference is. But it also helps me find new books to read.

This is mentioned in Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail which I read last year as part of my 2015 challenge!

- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No, I used a mention from a book I read last year.

- What do you think about book references in a book?
If it is a book I've enjoyed I know I can trust the author to make a good recommendation!

message 26: by Merry (new)

Merry Green I'm reading The Complete Stories by Flannery O'Connor as mentioned in Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, which I read last year.

I love book references in books I read. Quite often, I'll research them and possibly put them on my To Read list.

I chose The Complete Stories because I figure that whatever books a fantastic writer like Cheryl Strayed reads must have improved her writing style.

As I go through these stories, I am reminded of my college Lit classes. I was usually challenged to analyze them in in the same vein as taught. Being a free thinking individual, I usually clashed with the prof. I'm glad I don't have to go there now!

- What do you think about book references in a book?
I think it can be useful to reference another books in a fiction novel because it can make that fiction world be relatable for example if a character is reading a Harry Potter novel it gives the reader a frame of reference and something to relate to.

Nope, I only remember one real book being mentioned and no interest in it.
- What do you think about book references in a book?
I like it. I like it when used as a subtle character trait or as in Gone Girl makes you see a location better. I have been to cabins where old paperback novels are left behind.

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
- Did you use a book from your week 7 book?
No. This book was mentioned in Looking for Alaska which I read last year.
- What do you think about book references in a book?
Depends on the book. Looking for Alaska has death for a theme and if I remember correctly was one of the favorite books of one of the characters. I think that when a subject is worthy of further review, that book references can be helpful. I have bought many books because they were referred to in a book. Cat's Cradle was referred to in the body of the work, but another way to mention a book is in the bibiography. I have some of these on my reading list too.

Yes
- What do you think about book references in a book?
I think it is like allusions to books, other shows, and movies in a television show. Is is a chance for the author/writers to show their knowledge of trends and history of a medium, and it is exciting as a reader/viewer to get it, or an opportunity to look up and experience something new. Win/win.

Karen Rashid I read The Elegance of the Hedgehog The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery for this week.

I did not use my week 7 book. This book was one of many mentioned in The Little Paris Bookshop The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George which I read this summer. I chose this particular book because it is one of the few books that I own, have started, and never finished. I am glad that I finally picked it back up. Yeah, I did. The book in question is Lost in a Good Book. I read the first book in Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series a few years back and wasn't overly impressed. But I felt that I might like them better if I got the references, as a lot of the plot and humor seems to hinge on that. So this time, I am reading the books referenced first.

- What do you think about book references in a book?

I think it should happen often and whenever fitting.
