SOLVED. 70's book about child who is kidnapped, parents say go ahead and keep him/her? [s]

Maybe YA, or children's. My mom was just telling me about a book she read in 6th grade - which would have been 1975. It was about a child who was kidnapped, and when the kidnapper called the parents to ransom him, the parents told them to go ahead and keep him (because he was very badly behaved). Days went by and the kidnapper called back, begging the parents to take him back, even possibly offering money, and they still said no way.
