i agree it definitely put weight on 'just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should do a thing"

I know its taken a few months but I've finally started Naked in Death - aside from the futuristic references it reads like a typical police procedural so far.
I finished the first one a week or two ago. I thought it was really cool. The setting gives it an interesting spin, especially with the gun ban. I am going to read the second one ASAP.
Just checking in. I started Ceremony, but have to set it aside for a day while I quickly read another book that's due tomorrow morning. eek! I'll be back...
Finished #5 and #6. 5 was meh. I really liked 6.
Ceremony In Death J.D. Robb, #5 "In Death", 2-10-16 (3*), review
Vengeance in Death J.D. Robb, #6 "In Death" series, 2-15-16 (4*), review
I've finished Naked and Glory. I'm way behind so will only get to Immortal in March. Once I got past the whole futuristic element and started seeing it as a typical police procedural set in the future, I began enjoying it more.
I guess the villains in the first book but Robb caught me by surprise in the second. I had ruled (view spoiler)
Hi all - sorry I've been MIA... I finished up through Ceremony in Death. I liked that one but Rapture in Death really stuck with me. It's crazy to think about how susceptible we may be to mind control/subliminal suggestions.
I haven't read Vengeance yet - plan to in a few days. If I remember from my former reading, it's very impactful and gives more insight into Roarke. Can't wait for that!
I know that a few of us are still working on getting Vengeance done, but we should also look ahead to March, for we have a bit of a conundrum.Holiday in Death is the next book in the series, but it also has a novella follow up: Midnight in Death. My question is: Do we want to attempt 3 In Death books in March and read Holiday, Midnight, and Conspiracy, or would you like to stick with just 2 In Death books for March? If the group of us decides to go with the two book option, we will then need to further decide if it will be Holiday and Midnight or Holiday and Conspiracy.
I'll keep track of the votes in the next comment. When you leave your vote, if you choose the two book option, be sure to say what books you want!
Poll: Do we want to attempt 3 In Death books in March and read Holiday, Midnight, and Conspiracy, or would you like to stick with just 2 In Death books for March (If choosing this option, mention if you want Holiday and Midnight or Holiday and Conspiracy)?Trea: Read all 3 books in March
LaurLa: Read all 3 books in March (If poll decides 2 books votes Holiday and Midnight)
Logan: Abstains due to being behind on series
PepperPot: Read 2 books in March (Holiday and Midnight)
Dawn: Read all 3 books in March
Sherri:
Tiffany:
Lauren: Read 2 books in March (behind on series, Immortal and Rapture)
Since I'm already behind on the series, I don't think I'll be able to read so many in one month. I'm hoping to read Immortal and perhaps Rapture in March.
My holds came in for books 2-4 this weekend so I picked those up and will work to catch up in the next couple of weeks. I've already placed holds for books 5-7. I will abstain from voting since I'm behind.
I can do 3, I think. I'm trying to knock these books out because I have a box full of all of them next to my desk. I'm trying to clear space so it's not so messy in here! hehe
PepperP0t wrote: "I can't commit to three because of my other commitments."Which two did you want to read then? Holiday and Midnight or Holiday and Conspiracy?
going in order, so holiday and midnight unless you think you'll get to holiday before the end of this month.
I could commit to 3 for March but if the poll decides on 2, then lets stay in order with Holiday then Midnight.
PepperP0t wrote: "going in order, so holiday and midnight unless you think you'll get to holiday before the end of this month."I'm waiting on Library copies, so I won't get to Holiday before March.
So far, the poll is in favor of reading all three books, but we haven't heard from Sherri and Tiffany. I'll PM them and see if they are still reading them with us and what their choices are.Edit to add: PMs have been sent asking them to drop by the thread or reply to the e-mail and let us know their status.
Just an update: no response so far from Sherri or Tiffany to my PMs. My plan is to see if they respond by the 25th, then call the poll on the 26th so that everyone can plan their month.I know I am OCD in a bad way sometimes, so thank you everyone for putting up with it this time! I figure how we determine how to deal with the novellas this month will work for the rest of them down the road.
Sounds good, Trea. I'm okay with what everyone else decides. I know we all have a lot of books to read for different challenges or just for fun, so I certainly don't want to put pressure on anyone to have to read more than they are able to. It's probably easier for people to read ahead and just wait to comment than for people to get behind and not feel like they can contribute--or be afraid to read the posts on this thread for fear of spoilers. We can always just post our reviews later if we get ahead of the group.
Dawn wrote: "Sounds good, Trea. I'm okay with what everyone else decides. I'm just a bit of a reading machine, and as long as I schedule my month, I do ok. I just like to plan WAY ahead!
Okay, good. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't putting pressure on anyone. I was one of the people who voted for 3 books. :)
I've sort of stopped planning more than a couple of books ahead because I've found that I don't always feel like reading the books I had planned. Playing by ear has been working well for me and I'm also waiting for the books from the library so I slot them in when they come in.
Like Lauren, no matter the plan, my books seem to make their own plans and overrule me. I don't want to commit to more than two in case I don't get to it. I the vote is three, I'll just have to be a bit behind.
Did everybody finish Vengeance?

I think some folks are a bit behind on the series, but planning on getting to them all.
For me, these are such quick reads, but I'm afraid of burning out later in the series if I read too much too fast. But, even then, novellas are shorter, which is why my vote was for 3 in the month.
I do planning on reading them all but I'm behind (have Immortal up next). I'm 100% sure that if I read them too close together, I will definitely burn out on them. 2 per month (one in the beginning and one in the end) are the best fit for me.
once again Lauren and I are sharing a brain. They are quick reads Trea that's exactly why they have to be spaced out for me. Too much of a good thing and all that.
Also since everyone may not have gotten to/read Vengeance perhaps to say read three next month (Holiday, Midnight and Conspiracy) is a bit ambitious even though one is short.
And with Midnight being a novella (like anthologies they aren't always appreciated), some might want to skip it for that reason or have a hard time locating it or because at less than 100 pages it's not likely to help with other challenges.
All of that being said perhaps the answer is two per month. One by the 15th and one by the end of the month with novellas being optional and use the spoilers when updating. We'd check in with our reviews and/or thoughts.

That's kind of why I put the poll up, Pepper, to gauge where everyone wanted to go, simply because I knew that some people don't like to read the novellas. However, I went and counted them up, there are 11 novellas in this series! That's a big chunk of the series to miss out on! Prevailing opinion in the poll on the 2 in March option seems to be to read the novellas in order with the series. We already do 2 a month, one at the beginning and one at the middle, and since we decided that just recently (so I thought), I'm loathe to change it right now, but that's me. If everyone else wants to change it to mid and end of month, then it can be changed. My library holds are coinciding with the beginning/mid timeline, so I'd likely bow out of the buddy read and continue on my own, since I have no other option but to get these from the library and have to work off their timeline more so than my own.
the last two I read for this series were: Ceremony in Death @ 4.25stars P3pp3rp0t's review of Ceremony In Death
(view spoiler)
Vengeance in Death @4.75stars (review not posted yet)

Since many of us are reliant on library loans and other circumstances, perhaps a better idea is a more flexible buddy read in the sense that we all read at our own pace and comment as we go along. We can mention the book, the chapter and then whatever we want to say in a spoiler tag. That way others can choose to read or avoid depending on where they are in the series. I really enjoy the buddy reads and they make the whole reading experience more enjoyable.

And I personally read novellas and anthologies cover to cover. It was a suggestion and you've shared something I missed. (that they were the two per month at the beginning and the middle.)

I do too, Lauren, and I really like that idea! That way, our folks that I know are behind can still feel like they are participating too!
Since I've been the one updating the thread for the book we're currently reading, what I'll do is when it gets to the end of the month, I'll ask what book we'd all like to see featured for the upcoming month. For March, I'll set it for Holiday and leave it alone. Then near the end of March, I'll ask to see what folks want up next.
My plan for March will be to read Holiday, Midnight, and Conspiracy. For those of you friended to me, just scroll past my reviews so I don't inadvertently spoil things for you, even though I try not to add specific details to my reviews!
PepperP0t wrote: "ladies, I think we are all saying the same thing with different words."Probably, and I just can't see it.

Yeah, my brain doesn't get it sometimes until I wind up discussing it to death...
Trea wrote: "Yeah, my brain doesn't get it sometimes until I wind up discussing it to death..."Happens to me all the time!
as long as we remember the challenge is to complete the book and not drive ourselves nuts we'll be fine.
Whew! I hope you don't bow out Trea!! I think the idea that we read one at the beginning (which to me is up to the 15th or so) and one at the end (which means by the end of the month) works. And then to just make sure comments are under tags for those who haven't read quite that far yet.I enjoy reading everyone's comments so I hope we can all stay in the BR and feel comfortable adding comments even if we're playing catch up.
