LaurLa, Trea, Logan, PepperPot, Dawn, Sherri, Tiffany, & Lauren - In Death Series

I'm good with the 5th as well. Looking forward to it but need to speed read for some November challenges! ;)

It was pretty good. Builds on the first book without being so confusing that you have to have read that one to understand this one. The killer threw me for a loop, especially with the red herring that Ms. Roberts threw in. Looking forward to the next one!

I think it's shorter too and the mystery piece itself is actually more layered and involved. I also like the Eve Roarke thing.

I do like this series quite a bit

I had to keep putting this down for other challenges... why do we do this to ourselves??? But I claimed this one for 2 team challenges this coming week so I'll finally get it done!!
Anyway, I like this one. I'm just past the part where Eve and Roarke made up after their fight/breakup(?). I fell asleep reading last night so I'm anxious to get back to it.
I am angry at how Somerset treats Eve and that Roarke doesn't really put a stop to it, at least he hasn't yet. But since I've read deeper into the series, (view spoiler)

I'm up for it whenever. I added the series to a couple of year-long challenges I am doing, so I won't have to 'squeeze' them in among other challenges each month.
Do you think we could shoot for 2 a month? Or just take it as it comes, more or less depending on how things go?

Do you see the similarities in these 2 series? Or maybe just between Eve and Sam? I love both but as I was reading the Fatal series I couldn't help but think Eve was a template in some ways for Sam.

I've got the 1-5 bundle out from my library's e-lending service right now, so I'm fine with doing 2 a month right now. However, I would suggest we break it up a bit, do one in the beginning of the month, and do one closer to the 15th - 20th of the month. Gives us a chance to not overload so much on the series if we can cleanse our mental palates in between reads.

totally agree with beginning of the month, then later! Definitely need a break from Eve's intensity ;-)

I do see a lot of similarities in the series! I do think Eve was a template for Sam, and Fatal Consequences felt a lot like Naked in Death for me, just with different commentary. I knew it felt familiar, but I didn't connect it until you asked me about it!
Nick can't compare to Roarke, though, even though it is quite obvious that Roarke was a template for him. Nick really just can't let Sam be in charge, wants to protect her and keep her sheltered. Roarke is more of a partner to Eve and can appreciate her strength without domineering her. I like that more than Nick's style.

Don't you find similar characters/storylines when one gets popular? That's just a theme it seems and if they both gain popularity one veers off and finds it's own identity. (i.e. Black Dagger Brotherhood & Midnight Breeds)
I'm reading this long series and Virgin River along with other things. Since I won't let myself start a series until I finish one anymore I'm cleaning up bu I had started so many before I decided that (4 years ago) I still have a lot of hanger's on.

Don't you find similar char..."
I haven't read BDB/ Midnight Breeds, so I can't speak to that, but I have noticed it some with paranormal books trying to copy Laurell K. Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon. It's part of the reason why I stepped back from the genre, it all started to seem the same.
I have quite a few hanging on as well, Pepper. I'll have tied up 37 series by year's end, so I think that's a pretty healthy dent in the TBR! That's not even counting the abandoned series!

I can't do Laurell K. Hamilton - the first book I tried of hers had zombies, rats and snakes - no can do! I'll never know what's similar to her but some do emulate Kenyon. But it's not just PNR, it's every genre that the similarities are found - it's all about dollar bills!

I can't do Laurell K. Hamilton - the first book I tried of her..."
I can't do audio either, so don't feel bad! And you're right, it is about the money more than anything else!

And who's to blame them? How often do we read a book/series and enjoyed it enough that we ask for recs of something similar/in the same vein? If an author is talented enough to write a book within set parameters but still make it unique and their own, I won't complain that they are trying to use the trend to their advantage. That's not to say they all can pull it off, though....
When I recognized the similarities between Eve and Sam, I liked it. I sort of felt more connected to Sam because she felt familiar. At the same time, the series were different enough that I didn't feel like she was copying the In Death series.

Very well said, Laurla. I agree on all points. Some writers are more successful at this than others and no matter how they start they are fulfilling their dreams of being an author.
Also, since there is no accounting for taste or predicting who will like what there is nothing that says the 'imitation' won't be just as successful or even more successful than the original. First doesn't necessarily make best for everyone.
It's no different than singers starting out by covering popular songs made famous by others. I know I've not only liked both versions, I also liked the original or the remake better.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, Lauren. My sincere condolences. I hope you are able to find comfort in the good memories you have of him. I know that helped me when my dad passed away. Other people sharing stories about him helped keep him with me.

It makes us get to know them in a new way as well because we get the chance to see them from the perspective of how others saw them, instead of just as "Dad". I heard a lot from little old ladies all the nice things (repair work) "little Johnny" did for them without charging them anything. It makes me wonder what my kids will hear about me after I'm gone. I better straighten up, I guess. I've got my legacy-reputation to protect! I can see it now: "Oh, yeah, I remember your mom always carrying around books in her purse. But she was reluctant to tell us what she was reading, and she would hide the titles/covers!" ;)

Actually my aunt told me the other day that an acquaintance said she was sad to hear it of my Dad's passing and she remembered him fondly because he helped her with her tax returns, lol!

He obviously knew the way into a woman's heart! ;)

Eve stresses me out a bit with all her hesitations and grumpiness with Roarke. She better not push it too far...
Immortal in Death J.D. Robb, #3 “In Death” series, 1-8-16 (3-1/2*), review

We were looking at starting it on the 17th, but I'm all for starting it earlier if everyone else would like to. My library copy is due back on the 16th and I just have to do a group read on the 11th -12th. If I finish the book I'm in the middle of, I could start it today if everyone agrees.

Lauren, how have you been holding up? You've been on my mind. Big changes in your world. Hope things are settling down a bit for you.

Rapture in Death J.D. Robb, #4 “In Death” series, 1-19-16 (4*), review
I thought this one provided a lot of food for thought regarding how far we could/should go in advancements dealing with the brain and fiddling with thought processes, etc.

I'm not sure everyone did or not, but I figured that they still had the rest of the month to finish out.
