What was the longest book you ever read?

To me the first 200 hundred felt like 2000... (which where already 2000 too much, tbh). :D
My 19th century French version of Monte Cristo is over 1400 pages, as is my copy of Sue's Wandering Jew. Page count depends on the size of the page and the type size.I just figured how to sort the book list by pages, and it shows my longest is The Deluge by Sienkiewiecz, 1861 pages. Les Miserables is second at 1463.
The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon is showing at 1,443 pages and then The Count of Monte Cristo at 1,276. Both were so good I didn't even realize they were anywhere near that long. Thanks for the input on IQ84. It reminded me not to ever attempt that one again :D
I have never read straight through the Bible, so I won't count that. Probably it was either The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame. So long.
No, it seems it was Clarissa. Really? It didn't seem that long. Trust me, those years in the Swiss sanitarium with Hans Castorp seemed longer.

Thanks for the in..."I am currently reading the fiery cross! I have read all the books in the series thus far. All of those books are huge!
In the Shadow of no Towers
by Art Spiegelman is probably the tallest one I've ver readProduct Dimensions: 36.6 x 25.4 x 2.3 cm
heh
The "greatest" book you ever read was only 36.6 x 25.4 x 2.3 cm ? Cunning perspective... but there are many alter versions of bible that have that beat. Check out either of the Gutenberg Bibles on display at the Library of Congress and you'll see what I mean.

Probably also Battlefield Earth. But thanks to this suggestion I plan to read Cryptonomicon. Man, I love Goodreads. I have read hundreds and hundreds of books. However, I constantly, thanks to Goodreads and the amazing people here, come across a classic that I should have read.
Also, for length as an individual book several of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books are over a 1000 pages. But, taken as a series - DANG. I am not even sure where I gave up, it was about 10 years ago, maybe #8 or #9. I look back and ask myself "Why, did I put myself through that" LOL

I The thread doesn't mention the grestest book.
It's about the longest book... I jokingly put in the Shadow of No Towers as the "Tallest".
No, I understood your comment, Paul. My use of the word greatest was a playful rejoinder to your comment about the tallest. I should have gone on to ask if Journey to the Center of the Earth was the deepest you'd ever read. Or I could have made a comment about Stephen King's Thinner
Actually, I got distracted and ended my comment early I went to get a tape measure to get the dimensions of James Bidgood. My tallest book at 15.7 x 8 x 1 inches ;-)
I have read several Stephen King books that are well over 1,000 pages but can't remember exactly how many pages they are. I also read The Lord of the Rings Trilogy which was in one book. I also have several 1,000 page books waiting on my TBR pile.
I had to look it up to be sure, but besides the Bible I have read Atlas Shrugged, The Stand, and War and Peace.
War & Peace was very long. The Count of Monte Cristo was also long, but I thoroughly enjoyed that one. Under The Dome was long also.
The collectors edition of LoTR at my parents house runs upwards of 1400 pages (treating everything as one book and counting the appendices). As for non-fiction, Shirer's Rise and fall of the third Reich, clocks in just under 1200, without all of the notes.
Huh, interesting. The Stand on my bookshelf is 1153 pages.Surprised to see my longest single book read is The Witching Hour by Ann Rice 1207 pages. Atlus Shrugged and Don Quixote tied for second with 1168 pages each.

The Unabridged Stand (but it's been a LONG time).
The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss (1107 pages in the paperback) will zip by, and you'll wonder why there isn't more... and get frustrated that the next book isn't done yet. (Apparently George R.R. Martin read this in one night... amazing)
The longest book I read was a two volume set about the Nuremburg War Crimes Trial. It was written by one of the prosecutor's. It was well written and informative,
The Dark Tower (7 books) by Stephen King. Awesome! If you put the series between the covers of one book, you couldn't lift it. Also, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Pillars of the Earth (Follett), The Stand (King) and The Witching Hour (Rice).
The booklink for The Stand (complete and uncut) in the original post of this discussion shows 1153 pages. Which edition has these extra pages to 1440? That's a different of 300 pages.
Master of the Senate (1232pgs). I also read The Glass Bead Game, which felt long, but, depressingly, wasn't when I went back to check for this thread.
The Stand (both versions)Dombey and Son (Dickens)
The complete Sherlock Holmes - read it cover to cover.
Not sure if it counts, but I also read all of the Hornblower novels in chronological order of Hornblower's life. Although there are in (11?) separate novels, I read them as if they were one - starting the next as soon as I finished the previous one. That was my survival mechanism for a daily commute on the Victoria Line tube.

Not sure if it is the longest, but it is longest book I remember and often think of reading again-if I had the time. Vikram Seth's wonderful book A Suitable Boy. Trade paperback 1474 delightful pages.I, also, read The Stand years ago. Good, but not on a par with A Suitable Boy.
War and Peace and Le Miserables oh and Lord of The Rings oh gosh and Count of Monte Cristo, I know these are all in a top ten list for long novels. I could actually add to this list but it would go on forever.
I don't know if Homer's Iliad and Odyssey fall into long novels but it is in my top 5 to read every year.
Anne Rice - the Witching Hour is the longest so far but looking through my read books I have quite a few around the 900 page mark which I was surprised at.

I have never actually read the Holy Bible: King James Version cover to cover (at 1590 pages) nor The Norton Anthology of American Literature (at 2459 pages) and I don't consider the entire box set of Harry Potter (4100 pages) as a single book.
What was your longest?
BTW... I've heard that Herman Wouk originally planned on releasing his The Winds of War (1047 pages) and War and Remembrance (1382 pages) as a single book but he wisely broke it into two.
