Kirsten (kmcripn) Welcome, Keith & Phil!

Betsy - you liked Jar-Jar??? May your soul be cursed to wander the desolate spirit lands for eternity.

Brandon Harbeke | 142 comments Welcome, Phil! I'm a prequelist, too (actually a fan of all things Star Wars), and I live in Chandler. Have you read any of the Legends or canon Star Wars books?

Brandon, I read all the Star Wars novels I get my hands on. I've been reading them since I was 13 in 1993. Even the ones that weren't as good, still have a warm place in my heart.

message 1654: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 142 comments Right on! I've loved the recent books by Gray, Golden, and Zahn.

message 1655: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Zahn writes a fun YA series about a kid and a dragon that I really like.

message 1656: by Tim (new)

Tim Peace and long life y'all. My name is Tim from the Netherlands, and I'm really new to Science Fiction-literature and Space Opera in particular, but man I'm loving it.

So far, I've 'only' read Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga and Void Trilogy (OMFG), and some of Alastair Reynold's books (Pushing Ice, Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, Great Wall of Mars, currently reading Chasm City). Some of that stuff was so cool it made me wanna cry and change my Christmas-plans.

I'm seriously psyched not just about the prospect of reading more from these authors, but also the fact that there are still a gazillion other sagas, trilogies, series, whatevermarathonbooksfilledwithsupersweetspaceideasseriously, etc. out there for me to 'discover'.

This community seems really cool too, love the discussions, happy to make your acquaintance!

You don't need to apologize for loving Riordan. I am always finding myself being attracted by YA sci-fi & fantasy.

message 1667: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3723 comments Mod
There are a lot of great YA fantasy series! I read about half SF and half fantasy myself, and am currently trapped in a binge read of a fantasy series with about 12 books in it. Three more to go methinks...

message 1668: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Margo, I am almost 63 and I really enjoy Riordan's books. I got into them a few years ago when my now 14 year old son was given a boxed set of the first Percy Jackson series by one of my sisters for Christmas a few years ago.

I adored the first Dune book the first several times I read it. I read the second and third and went eh. Didn't read any of the rest.

message 1692: by L J (last edited Feb 02, 2018 05:49PM) (new)

L J | 186 comments I lean toward space opera in my science fiction. Generally avoid fantasy, YA, NA and books that have more sadness, violence and angst than humor, plot, and character development. I also read cozy mysteries, paranormal romance and random books I run across and think I will like. I will usually finish a book in series I'm reading even if I don't like it and wait for next book hoping for something better but will quit a book or series I no longer enjoy. I'm more likely to listen to a book than watch a TV show or a movie. Food I enjoy too much or so my scales tell me. I volunteer with local Friends of the Library group sorting books for book sales. Currently listening to J.D. Robb's Dark in Death. Re-reading Singh's Psy-Changeling series which touched me with a scene that could have come from the kind of 1950's SciFi I fell in love with years ago. Thinking about putting the Honor Harrington series on my 2018 re-read list. Having fun finding and reading short stories by old favorites like James Schmitz. I drink more hot tea than coffee in the winter and I'm going to make myself a cup now. Update: Dark in Death one of the better ones now to decide which of my TBR to read next.

message 1693: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 1091 comments Mod
Welcome L.J. I'm also a J.D. Robb fan. It doesn't count as sci-fi, but I enjoy reading about her vision of the near future.

message 1694: by L J (new)

L J | 186 comments Thanks Betsy. I'm enjoying the Robb. I think of in Death as futuristic police procedural. I find it odd that some sites classify the books on a book by book basis with the same site calling one book romantic suspense, another science fiction, another mystery and so on. I tend to think of any mystery books set in the future as types of mystery not as science fiction.
