Wayne Materi | 5 comments Hi, I'm Wayne.
I've been reading all manner of sci-fi since discovering Tom Swift when I was 12. I gravitate towards hard sci-fi and enjoy a complex, multi-storied plot.

My favorite books include Ender's Game, Dune, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Gods Themselves, Eon, The Uplift Wars, all of Iain M. Banks, Alastair Reynolds, John C. Wright, and Peter F. Hamilton.

I was trained in Computing Science and worked as a programmer/ consultant for a number of years before returning to university to get a PhD in molecular biology. I worked in synthetic biology at Canada's National Institute for Nanotechnology for a bunch of years before retiring to Cuenca, Ecuador in 2012.

Now, I'm pursuing a new hobby/career and writing my own sci-fi. I write and blog under the pen name, Paul Anlee, and my first book (The Reality Thief) is due out April 2017.

After I get what people are into here, I hope to look for interested reviewers. But I'm still an avid reader and hope to contribute in that vein as well (I see The Mote in God's Eye is up for discussion this month-an old favorite as well).

I'm looking forward to finishing the series and delving into another. Am excited about being a part of this group. Any and all recommendations are welcome.

message 1522: by Nick (new)

Nick Greetings all! My name is Nick. When I stumbled upon Flight of the Navigator as a kid there’s been no turning back for me and sci-fi! I love it and can’t get enough of it. Lately, my sci-fi reads have dealt more with colonization (specifically of Mars) especially since it appears we may actually be doing that within the next 10-15 years (just 30 years too late imo).

Favorite Books: Midshipman’s Hope (Seafort Saga), Old Man’s War (series), Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Ender’s Game, LOTR, Harry Potter series (I know it’s not Sci-fi, but I was 12 when Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone came out so I essentially “grew up” with Harry).

Favorite Genres: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Theology/History (I’m in grad school), a Western here and there.

Favorite TV shows: Stargate (all series), Star Trek (mostly TNG), Supernatural, Rick and Morty, BSG, Firefly (shiny!)

Favorite Movies: Star Trek: First Contact, Flight of the Navigator, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, Boondock Saints

Favorite Food: Mexican food, pizza, and a healthy diet of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Day Job: Insurance Underwriter (no wonder I read fiction) by day, husband and student by night.

Hobbies: reading, Cons, cruising, writing, gaming (LOTRO and MineCraft mostly)

Other: grad school student, dog lover, and I like to visit monasteries.

Jason Zavoda | 25 comments Greetings All,

I joined this group several years ago but lost contact with goodreads and now I'm back.

I've read many different books but we are gathered together here for sci-fi so I will try to stay on topic.

My favorite author is H. Beam Piper. I grew up with re-runs of Buter Crabbe as Flash Gordon, but it was too over-the-top for me to enjoy when I was older and had read and seen better books and films. The original Star Trek and the first Star Wars movie are some of my favorite films. A few years later I was enthralled by Tom Baker's Doctor Who and then Blake's 7.

I keep current with some David Weber, Bujold's Vorkosigan series and David Drake.

message 1525: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 1091 comments Mod
Welcome, Jason. I also liked Tom Baker's Doctor Who, but I got turned off by his personal life. And I loved Blake's 7. Too bad it was so short lived.

message 1526: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Absolutely adore Tom Baker Doctor episodes!!! My favorites include Pyramid of Mars and the Image of the Fendahl, as well as the Key to Time series.

message 1527: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Neither Bakers are in my top three. Hmm, I wonder how many actors have played The Doctor.

Baker was a bastard but I thought he was a wild genius of an actor. Blake's 7 was ahead of its time. I'd like to see someone with real talent make a modern version of it.

The Tom Baker years go by to fast for me. Pertwee was hit and miss and Davison was mostly miss.

Dougalishere | 5 comments Hello there fellow sci-fi lovers. I'm a new member to Goodreads, what a marvelous community. I haven't fixed all my reading lists etc as of yet, but I'm working on it :) I guess I'll just follow your template for my introduction!

Name: Nick

Favorite Books: Anything by Neal Asher, Peter F Hamilton and ofc Banks. (Still having trouble finding other authors that scratch the itch that these 3 do so well) I also have a guilty pleasure in Randolph Lalonde's Spinward Fringe novels.

Favorite Genres: I pretty much only read sci-fi but I don't mind the odd detective or horror novel.

Favorite TV shows: Game of Thrones, Fringe, BSG, Fawlty Towers and recently fell in love with Taboo. (I am a sucker for binge watching entire series even if they aren't particularly good, I'm looking at you Orphan Black.

Favorite Movies: Pulp Fiction is my all time favorite movie. As for others, there is just too many to list.

Favorite Food: Lasagna.

Day Job: Freelance content writer for various websites.

Hobbies: Reading and computer games.

Well, that's it really, me in a nutshell.

EDIT: Yeah well thought this was important enough to add to my TV shows: Westworld... that show was really really good, can't believe I forgot about it!

Hey, C.T. Phipps here. Author of the Supervillainy Saga, Cthulhu Armageddon, and my new space opera series Lucifer's Star. I've been a space opera fan from a tot upwards. Star Wars may be a boring answer for my favorite series but it is, what can I say.

Bookwise? Tough call. The Thrawn Trilogy, Alexis Carew by JA Sutherland, Starship Troopers, Honor Harrington, and The Secret King by Dawn Chapman all come to mind.

Movies? Non-SO is Jurassic Park. SO is the original trilogy.

Favorite TV shows: Have to think about that-probably anything in the above categories. I generally stay away from horror.

Day Job: I've done various things but I'm currently a gecko breeder. Yup. You read that right.

message 1543: by A. D. Perales (new)

A. D. Perales (adperales) | 6 comments Name: Desirée (Desi is fine! Or AD)

Favorite Books: Anything by Toni Morrison; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz; Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel; His Dark Materials trilogy, Animorphs series

Favorite Genres: Literature, paranormal, urban fantasy

Favorite TV shows: Umm... I don't really have any. I like to binge-watch on Netflix, but I'm not so into things I would consider myself a die-hard. In my teenage years I was super into anime, and my favorites were Revolutionary Girl Utena and Escaflowne, does that count? Hahaha

Favorite Movies: Blade Runner (I am so hyped for the sequel!), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Hot Fuzz, The Fifth Element, Disney Animated Films (traditional and 3D), The Road to El Durado

Favorite Food: Asado. This is difficult to explain, because it's a Tex-Mex dish and different regions interpret it differently. It's a red chile sauce similar to something you'd put over enchiladas with roasted pork. I think in New Mexico it's called Carne Adovada. I've seen it called Asado de Puerco as well. It's very simple and not the prettiest dish by a far margin, but it was my Grandma's specialty. Its simple, but very difficult to get right.

Day Job: Government worker (one of the peons, nothing special)

Hobbies: Photography, baking, cooking (I hope to start one of those "fandom food" blogs someday), writing, gaming

Other: When I was a child, my dream was to be an animator for Disney. That's why to this day I still have a huge soft spot for animated movies. :)

I am an author who has published under another name. I don't have a space opera on the list of novel projects (yet, it's always a "yet" with me) but I'm here for discussion of books, not to toot my horn. Perhaps someday if I ever write one I'll be able to share with you. :)

One day while talking with a friend about books we've read, I mentioned how I wanted to read sci-fi book without too much in the way of technical jargon, more adventure and light fantasy mixed in like Star Wars. She mentioned that I would probably like Space Opera, and that's how I ended up here! Judging from the genre description, it's exactly what I've been wanting to read. :D

I look forward to discussing a (hopefully) new favorite genre with people. :)

message 1545: by Bill's (new)

Bill's Chaos (wburris) Hi, my name is Bill.

I discovered Tom Swift books in the school library in about 1969, and have been a fan of science fiction ever since. I probably read all the science fiction in the school library from 1970 to 1976. My personal collection now far exceeds what the library had back then. I was in the process of reading all the Dune books but got distracted and am reading books from various book clubs and working my way through Larry Niven's Known Space books.

My main interests are AI, nanotech, cyberpunk, and space opera.

I have probably seen all the Star Trek TV shows and now have started watching them again on on netflix but not progressing very rapidly. Watching TV takes too much time out of reading and listening to music. I like The Expanse TV series and hope to soon read the books.

I have seen all the Star Trek and Star Wars movies but not much else.

I am retired but was an electronics tech in the Physics Department at the local University, but spent most of my time at work writing software. For many years the software was for automating data acquisition from various instruments. The last few years was spent writing code for FPGAs in custom electronics for particle physics and nanotechnology research.

For hobbies I take my camera for long walks in nature and around the city, play the stock and options markets, listen to music (ambient, electronic, postrock, jazz, classical), read science fiction, science and economics. I give up on gardening until after I get a body transplant.
