Hmmm... auditor for clinical trials? A medical thriller like a Robin Cook novel comes to mind. Now my mind has gone off on all sorts of interesting directions for an inter-galactic World War Z type zombie-plague infesting the Milky Way...

I have always loved this quote by Niccoli Machiavelli:

"On the coming of evening, I return to my house and enter my study; and at the door I take off the day's clothing, covered with mud and dust, and put on garments regal and courtly; and reclothed appropriately, I enter the ancient courts of ancient men, where, received by them with affection, I feed on that food which only is mine and which I was born for, where I am not ashamed to speak with them and to ask them the reason for their actions; and they in their kindness answer me; and for four hours of time I do not feel boredom, I forget every trouble, I do not dread poverty, I am not frightened by death; entirely I give myself over to them."

Macchiavelli? Everybody should read The Prince at least once in their lifetime (and keep it by their bed if they work in business). There's a reason they describe some people as 'Machiavellian.' :-)

message 120: by James (new)

James Oscher | 2 comments Name: James

Favorite Books: Some of them include, Novels from Tom Clancy and Larry Bond. I am also a total geek for SF books, too many to list.

Favorite Genres: Well I guess we can say Space Opera, but I am also a fan of Military books (SF or Alt-History), as well as a good 'ol Rambo/Rainbow 6 type books.

Favorite TV shows: I honestly don't watch TV much, but I do like things like Family guy, Star Trek (<3), and recently have grown on to competition cooking shows. IDK.

Favorite Movies: Let see, Star Trek, Armageddon, Marvel Movies, Band Of brothers.

Favorite Food: If it is spicy enough to make my eyes water and make me regret it later, its all fair game.

Day Job: I work in a hotel, and currently a Political Science undergrad about to graduate.

Hobbies:I like to play video games (PC), and I like to take deep sky photos with my 8" newt telescope and DSLR.

Other: I am just looking for a place to find some good reads, it has only been the last year since I have really started to read books. I used to read all the time, and I have once again begun that. I have read every single Tom Clancy novel, and literally have a book shelf devoted to it. Ever since I discovered Amazon Kindle, and able to download books means that I have read 60 books in the last 12 months.

I am a big space geek and know quite a bit about the weapons of WWII. I prefer reading books detailing the combat of large scale tactics rather then the one ship in the sea kinda deal. When I think of a battle, I think of more then just 1 on 1 or even 1 on 4. Sure overcoming overwhelming odds is easier to put in perspective in small numbers, but stories like the 300 Spartans is really what I like to read.

Betsy | 1091 comments Mod
Name: Betsy, older than most of you

Favorite Books: Jane Eyre, Hellspark, In Death series by J.D. Robb, LOTR, Earth's Children series (except the last one), most of the early Pern books, most Valdemar books (Mercedes Lackey), Riddle Master trilogy, 84, Charing Cross Road, 1066 and All That: A Memorable History of England, To Kill a Mockingbird, anything Honorverse, Lowell's Solar Clipper series

Favorite Genres: Some science fiction - especially space opera if it's not too heavily focused on war and military; I like the ones that are more about ordinary people in space - the aforementioned Solar Clipper series, Cherryh's Company Wars, Moon's Vatta's War, Dan Thompson's just started Father Chessman Saga. Also some fantasy, but not all -- loved LOTR, Pern, Harry Potter, Riddle Master, Cherryh's Morgaine series, Eddings, Valdemar, Chronicles of Elantra; didn't care that much for Jordan, Feist, Tad Williams, or Elizabeth Moon. Some romance. Some mystery and crime/suspense. Some nonfiction -- history, science, politics.

Favorite TV shows: original Star Trek, Stargate SG-1 (except for the last season), La Femme Nikita (except for the last season), CSI (Las Vegas only), Tom Baker's Dr. Who, Ravenswood; currently: Crisis, Elementary, Fargo. Mostly on TV I watch news and political commentary.

Favorite Movies: not that much of a movie fan lately, but some that I've watched multiple times are Star Trek IV, Avatar, the Hunt for Red October, all four Bourne movies

Favorite Food: shrimp, pasta, chili, chocolate, vanilla ice cream, good sourdough bread and cold butter

Day Job: retired, but my last job was as tech support in a law firm

Hobbies: reading

Other: I may not participate in the group reads every month. I act as co-moderator for another group on GR (Science & Inquiry) and that keeps me a little busy, as well as the several hundred books already on my TBR list, but since a number of my favorites seem to fit the Space Opera genre, I always like to keep my eyes open for recommendations.

I love the dark and disturbing in book. I also am huge fans of fantasy (all kinds), Sci-fi, dark stories, and some general fiction here and there whenever it sparks my interest.

I am a HUGE Trekkie though; since I was a young child. My dad is a Trekkie as well and I grew up watching Star Trek with him. My love of the show grew and blossomed as I grew. Now even my wife is a Trekkie!

message 132: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Harbour (jsharbour) I've been reading sci-fi since age 14 when I picked up the Foundation Trilogy at a flea market and was instantly hooked. Currently reading Heinlein. I tend to go through an author's complete works now while I used to jump around but I'd like to learn of some new space opera series while I'm here (last year I read the Void series). I also read a lot of themed sci-fi: Star Wars, Star Trek, Halo, etc, which tend to be dramatic/operatic.

Faves: Greg Bear, Asimov, Heinlein, McCaffrey, Peter Hamilton, David Mack, John Scalzi, Vernor Vinge.

Dislikes: Niven, Clarke, Reynolds, Brin, Benford.

On the fave TV shows, I have a question: What is the huge appeal of Firefly? I have never understood it. It wasn't that good. The plot was kind of lame (basically, a guy ferrying a prostitute from planet to planet--and not much else going on). LOL. But I'm open minded.

I'll have to give it another try then. Joss Whedon was lucky to get a movie deal out of it in the end, which I'm sure was great for fans. I saw Dr. Horrible last week and it got me thinking about Firefly again. I liked that also, but don't *get* the cult following. This isn't anywhere near Army of Darkness or Princess Bride in terms of awesomeness. :)

If you -really- want to see dedication, rent the Browncoats fan-made movie some time (which I was one of the Kickstarter crowd-source funders). Yeah ... it's really lame. But in a fun, 'I can do this' kind of way.

Pete Cruickshank | 26 comments Hi all. My name’s Pete Cruickshank from York England. Always loved Space Opera since Star Wars. I love the jaw dropping visuals and concepts which a good Space Opera novel can evoke, mix this in with some unique characters which can only be found in Sci-Fi, what’s not to like.

I like almost all things geek. I love Video-games, which I strongly feel is under-appreciated as a medium by the media as a whole.

Favorite Books: Foundation and Robot Series. Dune series, Ender series, All Peter F. Hamilton stuff (great work Anna getting that interview). Also love The Dark Tower series

Favorite Genres: Sci-fi, Fantasy and also Graphic Novels; big DC Marvel Fan, since I was a nipper, as we say in England.

Favorite TV shows: 24, Fringe, Battlestar Galactica is still one of my favourite shows to come out recently. Dr Who, Sherlock. Back in the day it was all Star Trek and Babylon 5 which I think was groundbreaking when it comes to story arcs. I play video-games more than watch TV.

Favorite Movies: Difficult. I’m a sucker for the super-hero movies, which are a mix or ok and Amazing to me. The Empire Strikes Back, The blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, The Bourne identity and too many more to contemplate.

Favorite Food: Lobster without the shell, Calamari done to perfection, A good old British curry.

Day Job: Psychology Technician.

Hobbies: Writing The Kinsmen saga, a love affair with Videogames, a mild obsession with crisps (chips in the US). Surprisingly I’m not over-weight and try to make exercise a hobby but it’s more of a chore.

Other: I’m also an artist.

Welcome Pete! You finally decided to say hello :-)

I just picked up all 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica for $87 on blue-ray this week from Amazon's Deal-of-the-Day. Didn't even blink. It was like ... open email ... $87 ... blue ray ... buy. Love the OS, loved the reboot, now they're saying they're going to re-reboot it (though I'm skeptical of how that will turn out).

Yeah ... Space 1999 ... my favorite character was the shapeshifter they picked up (never stopped to ask how somebody from so far away could be so human). What was her name? Maya or something? I remember the episode where they went to the plant-planet where the plants killed all the animals. It's funny what sticks in your head when you're a kid, eh?

Be sure to go visit our Gaming/MMO tie-in universes thread to hobnob with Dale, who's probably feeling that same lack-of-respect :-) I don't personally play video games very much (no time), but I like the occasional board game and love to LARP, which is based on board and video game rules. Curing some of that disconnect between readers of science fiction books and developers of science fiction online universes is something I hope to get people to overcome!

Welcome, Pete, and be sure to say Hi more often!

Jael Wye | 7 comments I love the Lost Fleet series--Geary, the protagonist, is great and the take on space warfare is fascinating. The political and spiritual themes are well-handled too. The battle scenes are exciting, though most of the fighting is done by the ships, so the gore factor is low, if that makes a difference.

Thanks. I'll be sure to check out the gaming thread. Enjoy battlestar it is amazing. Space 1999 always reminds me of Ulysees 31 a cartoon series from the 80'a which mixed greek mythology with sci-fi. It's fantastic the animation was pretty good but most importantly the stories were incredible, and it had a story arc with a awesome final episode. They should do a live tv series of Ulysees 31.
