Scott (scott_hopkins_author) | 5 comments Hey Everyone. My name is Scott. I'm an author and reader. I'm currently working on a Sci-Fi adventure with lots of espionage, space travel and intrigue. My favorite Books are Necromancer, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner), Enders Game and the Harry Potter Series. I really love Science Fiction and fantasy stories. My favorit TV shows align pretty well with my favorite Genres, I really love Star Trek, Turn, Game of Thrones and Black Sails. My favorite movies....you guessed it...SCI FI. Most specifically the Star Wars series (original episodes 3-6, not the remastered CGI crap) and some of the harder grittier Sci Fi stories. I really love cooking and love eating spicy foods. But I have tastes for foods that range all over the world.

By day I'm a mild mannered military instructor and aviator and when I jump into my power armor I become a mean writing maching....(I wish).
My hobbies include....you guessed it... Writing, Reading, Video Games, Cooking and playing RPG's whenever possible.

It's a pleasure to meet all of you and I hope to get to know you better.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Hi, Scott! I'm a big fan of GoT too. Only can watch after it's released on DVD, though. But I bought the first 4 seasons on Amazon Video so I may catch up a little.

I like gritty sci-fi as long as there's some of the adventure and wonder there too. I agree about the Star Wars series.

Welcome!

Welcome Scott! Were you a BSG fan as well when it was out? Now that was some mean space opera / drama / espionage :-)

message 1304: by Scott (new)

Scott (scott_hopkins_author) | 5 comments Hey Anna,

Yeah totally into BSG. I began to lose interest in the series when they got close to the end. I know they were under a time constraint to end the series before the network established deadline, but I love what they did with it, especially considering I used to watch the original as a kid.

message 1309: by Susanna (last edited Aug 26, 2016 09:39AM) (new)

Susanna Eastman | 1 comments My name is Susanna.

Like to read: My husband introduced me to sci-fi when we started dating in college (have now been married for decades.) He loved Dune, Ring World and invited me to read them too. While I enjoy all sci-fi, I've become a sci-fi romance fan. I love Laurann Dohner, Cynthia Sax and Cara Bristol.

Favorite TV shows and movies: The Walking Dead, Containment, Outlander, Lost Girl, Star Trek (TV and movies), Star Wars. I also love sappy romances and dystopian stories.

Food: Love all food (wish I could say I was kidding). Favs are Thai, Chinese and Italian.

Work: For years I worked as a corporate communications writer for a technology company outside of Washington, DC. Now I'm focusing on my fiction.

Hobbies: Love to read, write and cook! I published my first sexy space opera Captive Heat last year and a sequel, Timeless Heat, is coming out soon.

Other: I love to travel. When my kids were little I decided they needed to see the world and we'd start with the U.S. For ten years in a row, we took a summer vacation to visit a national park of the west.

message 1310: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Science fiction, especially the stories set in outer space, are like travelling, but in the mind. If you like to travel you are in the right group. We may never leave earth but our minds travel to the outermost fringes of the universe, and sometimes beyond.

message 1323: by Jim (new)

Jim Cronin | 8 comments Hi everyone. I am a semi-retired science teacher. After spending 35 years in middle school I decided to try a few new adventures in life. Currently I a a part-time educator-performer at the Denver Museum of Nature and science. This means I get to dress up like an astronaut and go to Mars and talk with visitors, or dissect hearts and lungs, travel through the solar system as a tour guide, play with optical illusions, read stories to kids, even become a pirate bacteriologist. Tons of fun for a life-long geek. In my spare time I am a science fiction author and proud grandpa to a beautiful young lady, with 2 more on the way..

My favorite books are usually scifi, epic fantasy, or historical fiction. But I will read almost anything if I hear good recommendations. You can see my all time favorites on my goodreads page.

Favorite Genres: SF and Crime

Hobbies: Walking the dog, playing with gadgets
Other: Looking forward to discovering new authors and universes

message 1327: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments Welcome Gillian,

If like movies that are a bit cheesy can I recommend Doc Savage with Ron Ely? I confess I've had good success recommending this one to people.

I was going to catch up on The Laundry Files later this year, but things have fouled that up.

Really interested in the work that you do. If you'd care to elaborate (here or off line elsewhere) I'm very interested. My girlfriend's mother has been diagnosed with dementia and despite our respective experience and educations it has been a challenging experience.

p.s. our 8 year dog can tell the time and what day of a week it is. I get 60 pounds of pit bull landing on my chest on Saturday and Sunday mornings because he knows that is when he gets to go jogging with me.

On the historical fiction front have your tried Owen Parry's Abel Jones' books? The audio books are excellent, and I finishied the series in hard copy (went with what was on hand as the ex-wife moved her stuff out). Like many others here I would recommend Banks and Asimov from the old guard, and Scalzi and Stross for science fiction.

They do tend to do that (takeover our lives). The one problem we sometimes hit with the boy is when he sprints out to the yard to chase critters at 0200 hours and bark the neighborhood down.

And, he's a bed hog.

For What It's Worth! I.e. not much. Sorry. I hate TLAs (or is that FLAs?) usually, as they are more often than not obfuscating. I think there's an episode of Yes Minister where the acronyms become so ridiculous they end up stalling everyone so much that nothing gets done - as usual. They can be useful shorthand, though, fwiw.

message 1337: by C. John (last edited Sep 24, 2016 04:34PM) (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Ah, I see (I think). I admit these acronyms can be confusing, and English is my first language. Had to ask my wife what LOL meant the first time I came across it. Not sure being 61 is much of an excuse or not. Old enough to have fond memories of Captain Condor (I think that was the character's name), Robot Archie and The Spider though.

Favorite TV Series to date. 1. Stargate (ALL SERIES) 2. Battle Star Galactica 3. Dark Matter

I have what seems to be a unique taste for mythology woven into space operas especially Norse or Sumerian. Also I have a weird thing for needing to listen to music when i read, like Two Steps from Hell or music mixed by Spacemind. Like I said a bit unique.

Nice to meet you all and thank you for adding me to youre collective.
