Yes! I love the Star Trek reboots too. I'm so used to reading io9 comments, that I thought not many people liked the movies.

I stopped getting hard copy books when I got my first kindle years and years ago. There is no way I could read as much as I do (or afford it) if I was still in hard copy -- heck we wouldn't have as much to read if it weren't for indie authors who only publish digital!

message 571: by Anna (new)

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) I get ebooks a lot for my Nook, but my kids keep stealing it to play Role Playing Games when I ban them from my computer (who'd a figured a Nook could be abused that way) so I find myself falling back on good old-fashioned paper :-)

Think of how much money you're saving, though, over some other more costly activity? With a rustle of a page or click through an e-reader, all the knowledge in the world quite literally lays beneath your fingers :-)

Hello. I made a comment on one of the feeds before introducing myself. Apologies. My name is Craig Jenkins and I work in London on the Underground re-lining tunnels...Not so interesting. Nice to see Battlestar and Blade Runner fans on here. It would be difficult to list all the books, films and tv here so I'll list the top ones. Books by Philip K Dick and Iain Banks are among my favourites. Presently watching Banshee, Game of Thrones, Penny Dreadful and the strain. Still waiting for something as good as Battlestar myself; well in space I mean. Tend to spend a lot of time watching youtube feeds regarding conspiracy theories via the likes of Jim Marrs as quite interesting even if nonsense (Who am I to judge)
Written two sci fi novels probably on the basis that I like the architecture in the Alien Movies...I have a weird fascination with future tech that's grounded in reality. Saying that, everyone likes a light sabre, Don't they?

R. Billing (r_billing) | 196 comments Hi folks. I've been reading space opera in various forms for at least 50 years, and even had some of my own published. As a kid I watched Fireball XL5, Space Patrol, Pathfinders in Space and just about remember the first episode of Dr Who. It was Tom Godwin who got me reading SF as well, favourites were Asimov, Heinlein, van Voght, Anne McCaffrey and later on Niven and Sladek.

I'll read almost anything with a spaceship in it, or humans living on another planet. I admire clever plot twists, such as the one in "Little Fuzzy" where it's clear that the aliens are communicating but nobody can hear them. Why? Scale the wavelength of the sounds to the size of their tiny voice boxes and it's obvious, they're way above the range of our hearing.

Two things annoy me: not thinking through the science, and characters too stupid to live.

I'm almost 60 now, which means I should know better. I cook, drive horsedrawn vehicles and run special effects for a local drama group, which include letting off large but very precise explosions on stage.

Welcome R.! My 13-year-old just discovered the joys of Dr. Who ... it's so funny to hear her getting into stuff I've been into since -I- was a kid (I started watching with the Fourth doctor). She's a 'TEN' fan.

Large but very precise explosions? Sounds like fun :-)

Welcome! Battlestar Galactica is by far the best TV show ever. By movie do you mean the mini-series that turned into the show?

Welcome Theo! Sounds like you're in the right place :-) And we've got some gamers in the group. Your best bet at rag-chewing with them is hopping into whatever gaming thread is up at the top of the community at the moment, I believe the gaming-peeps were discussing the latest space opera MMORPG. A quick reminder note that the last(?) book The End of All Things in the Old Man's War series is still forthcoming in August or you can read it early in 4 e-book episodes releasing this month. The first one was released yesterday The Life of the Mind: The End of All Things
