Pratchett, Terry ; The Colour of Magic (Discworld #1), Informal Buddy Read, Start Date 7 November 2015
ooo ive been planning on reading this again but ill have to pop in closer to the start date to see if i'm able to commit enough time
Welcome Delitealex!
Equal Rites is the first Witches book so you can start there (I first started with Guards! Guards! Which is the first City Watch book). Nancy and I just wanted to go riiiiight back to the beginning. Feel free to join!

I figure I will start with the color of magic to get a sense of discworld then I'll go onto equal rites
There is a Goodreads group I just found that is going to read all the Discworld books in publication order- one book a month over the next few years. I just joined a few days ago. They are on the first book for this month, but I'll have to wait to read it until November. I'll be out of town from Nov 7-20, but I may have sporadic times when I can post here. I'll probably read it on my trip and jump to this thread and post whenever I can.
Oh gosh I'm not sure I could commit to all of them over a period like that. I did a Neil Gaiman a book a month for a year and even though I enjoyed them, I was glad to get to the end.
Sure thing, just post whenever you can :)

I'm in, of course. I have become so OCD when it comes to reading series in order, I had to start here.
This is one of many in the series that I still need to read. It'd be fun to discuss it with people :)

Reading Neil Gaiman for a year would be fun, too! I am a little nervous about coming to a several year long read. But on the other hand, it would be a big accomplishment and be really memorable to read all the books together with the same group of people and see how our opinions change through time.
I've been wanting to read Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series for years and years and years. This buddy read might be just what I need to get started. I'll place The Color of Magic on hold at my library so as to read it with you all. :-)
I checked out The Color of Magic from the library today! I'm very excited to start reading it. Depending on when I finish the Harry Potter series, I might start it before the seventh. Or I might wait for Tower Teams to start. We'll see! :-)
I love these books- I've read all but one of the 41 books in the series in order over the past few years (and that one only because it's illustrated and doesn't come in an electronic version, and I couldn't find it in my local bookstore at the time). I even started rereading them because I was having withdrawals after I finished. So I might chime in to the discussion! They're so unique and funny; I hope you guys like them! :) I kind of envy those of you who haven't read them before being able to discover them for the first time. Enjoy!
I will tell you that it took me more than just the first book to fully get into them. It was books 3 and 4 that completely hooked me (although my favorite is probably Guards! Guards! (#8)... But it's so hard to choose!). You'll know pretty quickly if they're really NOT your thing, but I didn't immediately know that they would turn out to be so much my thing.
Thanks for sharing, Emily! I'm really envious that you've read almost all while I've never read even one. This series has intimidated me for years because of the number of books, and at the time it first hit my radar there were maybe half as many! But I'm excited to finally get started. I just need to finish the Harry Potter series first. :-)
Don't feel too intimidated- it's not the kind of series where you have to read all of them. You can stop at book 10 or 15 or 20 or whatever and not be left with cliffhangers. With the exception of the first two, which are very connected, each book is a pretty complete story. The same characters will just go on to have other adventures in some of the later books.
Emily wrote: "With the exception of the first two, which are very connected, each book is a pretty complete story. ..."I heard that somewhere else recently, so I have already placed a hold on book two at my library. :-)

It is handy...but only if you know how to read it. It just confuses me. Somebody once told me, or I read somewhere, that it's pretty safe to read them in publication order. So that's the way I'll do it, probably.
Though on further reflection, maybe if I print it out so that I can actually read everything clearly and see it better would help and then I MIGHT be able to follow this guide. ;-)

You can go in publication order, or go by the "mini series" within the Discworld series.
So, for example, this book is the start of the Ricewind Novels. You could continue along that line to stick with him, or you can go over to the Witches novels (starting with Equal Rites), or the Death novels (starting with Mort) , for example.
In saying that I have read some books in no particular order and it didn't matter too much ;)

Thanks, Karen. I might try to follow this guide if only to make it "fun" to read 40+ books. I expect it to be fun anyway, but the guide might help make the prospect of reading so many books seem not as intimidating as it has been for the past 10-15 years. ;-)

I have The Color of Magic checked out from my library already. I plan to start it tomorrow! I'm really excited to finally read it, too. :-)
Hooray! I'm now free and clear and can start The Color of Magic! I'm so excited to finally read this book! :-)
Well, I just finished the Prologue and I have to say.. This is the happiest I've ever been to be confused out of my mind! :-) (I'm just so happy to finally be starting this series, lol.)

lol
I've started and finished part 1.
So many funny lines, I highlighted:
Being Ymor's right-hand man was like being gently flogged to death with scented bootlaces"

Ha yeah the Prologue is quite a lot of images! I had a fun time scanning some "discworld turtle" pictures on google - beautiful!
lol Karen! That is a fun line. :-)I found my first made-me-laugh quote on p.9 in Part 1: The Weasel and Bravd have just waylaid Rincewind the Wizard on the road. "He pointed back down the road to where his traveling companion was still approaching, having adopted a method of riding that involved falling out of the saddle every few seconds." lol!

That is beautiful! And also helps to clear up some of my confusion! (I was having trouble visualizing the world. Never occurred to me to Google images.)
I laughed at the part in the prologue about how there's a theory that there are many turtles travelling through space and eventually they will all meet in one place and mate - that theory is called the Big Bang.
If any of you enjoy the book and want to continue with the series then there is a group here that is reading a book a month. November they are reading the 2nd book The Light Fantastic so not too far ahead.

I'm about halfway (better than halfway, actually) through Part 1. I've read so much that has made me chuckle or smile... too much to share. This book is just hilarious! I'm really loving it. :-)
Finally finished Part One. (I got roped into watching some episodes of Are You Being Served? with/by my mother.) I am really enjoying this story. The humor in it is superb! Now to read on and see what becomes of Rincewind, the hapless wizard, and Twoflower, the enthusiastic tourist with the amazing Luggage. :-)

This is an "Informal Buddy Read"
An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.
Book Synopsis:
Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent, bestselling novels have garnered him a revered position in the halls of parody next to the likes of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen.
The Color of Magic is Terry Pratchett's maiden voyage through the now-legendary land of Discworld. This is where it all begins -- with the tourist Twoflower and his wizard guide, Rincewind.
On a world supported on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There's an avaricious but inept wizard, a naive tourist whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course THE EDGE of the planet...
