Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Hi Everyone! Welcome - I am so excited to be doing another Tower Teams. It was actually Tower Teams which got me started on reading challenges so this particular challenge holds a very special place in my heart.

So how about we break the ice with a bit of a welcome. Here are a few questions to guide you if you like...

1. Where do you live?
2. What is your favourite genre? What is your least favourite genre?
3. Do you have any pets/children?
4. Where is your favourite place to read?

message 13: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments I'll start if you like:

So, I now live in Adelaide, Australia. We moved here only two weeks ago after living in the UK for almost 20 years, so we are still getting settled! It has been a pretty stressful few weeks.

I read almost anything. I really love crime fiction, history, science and literary fiction, but recently I have started reading paranormal and fantasy and I absolutely love it. I never believed it would happen. My least favourite genre? Chick-lit. I hate chicklit with a passion (although saying that, I will even read that occasionally)

I have two children - Ethan who will be 4 in November and Josephine who is 14 months old. They are my full time job currently.

My favourite place to read is in bed at night. I could happily sit up all night with a book. It's only knowing Josie will wake up at 5.30am and want to get up that stops me.

Hi everyone!
great to see some familiar faces and new ones in the team list!
I am your moderator mentor (i.e. go to person) if there is anything your captains can't answer or need help with, so I'll float around, but my team is Bastet. The other Egyptian teams are your "sister teams" so feel free to go and visit them and share book recommendations, memes, or just chat!

message 15: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 278 comments Hi there! This is my first Tower teams challenge so I'm still a little murky about how this is done. I'll just promise to read, read and read some more :)

message 16: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 278 comments 1. Where do you live?
Kolkata, India

2. What is your favourite genre? What is your least favourite genre?
Anything as long as I don't find it too boring or morose. Recently, I've started reading a lot of fantasy novels though.

3. Do you have any pets/children?
I had goldfishes but they really don't have very long lifespans so after a few of them died, I just stopped replacing them. I'd love to get a pet dog in the future.

4. Where is your favourite place to read?
My room, on my bed with lots of pillows and cushions.

message 17: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Hi Ipshita. Firstly, don't worry too much about the challenge - it is just a load of fun. There are goals, games and lots of chatter and overall, as long as you just read, you'll be fine.

What fantasy have you been reading? I've just got into it myself this year and I can't seem to get enough of it.

What fantasy have you been reading Nancy? I'm not a fan of high fantasy generally, and so I struggle to find good recommendations. The last I read that is popular was Mistborn and i really enjoyed it.
(Of course we'll read some Pratchett soon, and that's in its own category really ;). I must set up a buddy read thread for that actually next time I'm on my computer!)

message 20: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Ooo, thank you. I am so looking forward to finally getting started on that series.

As for what I have been reading, well it started with the Garth Nix series (which I loved). Since then I have tried all sorts of things from Maggie Stiefvater (who I also love) and Patrick Rothfuss through to some of the paranormal stuff. I have really enjoyed discovering a whole new genre which I'd pretty much avoided.

message 21: by Drishti (new)

Drishti (drishti_ohri) | 1047 comments 1. Where do you live?
Punjab, India

2. What is your favourite and least favourite genre?
My favourite genres are fantasy and mythopoeia. (Sorry! I couldn't choose one.) I'm not a big fan of philosphy genre or biography/ autobiographies. I try from time to time but I always give up somewhere in the middle.

3. Do you have any pets?
I thought of keeping birds once. But, one of the birds died on its very first day in my home and another died a week later. I got so upset that I never kept a pet again. :-(

4. Where is your favourite place to read?
My room, on my bed.

Which Nix series Nancy?
Sabriel is wonderful and I've read Mister Monday But not the rest of that series yet.

I do need to give Rothfuss a try. Maybe I'll do that this challenge

message 23: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 278 comments Hi Drishti! I also like books based on mythologies. Sadly, I haven't found a lot of good books in that genre yet. The last one I read was Son of War, Daughter of Chaos.

Even I really got into that genre from this year. I recently read a lot of urban fantasy books belonging to the Kate Daniels series and a few other books by Ilona Andrews, Anne Bishop's Other series and Maria V. Snyder's Healer and Poison series.

message 25: by Danni (new)

Danni (luciepurr) | 85 comments 1. Where do you live?
I live in Geelong, Australia, which is about an hours from Melbourne.
2. What is your favourite genre? What is your least favourite genre?
My favourite genre? What an impossible question! I like YA, NA, Literary Fiction, Science fiction, dystopia, contemporary, memoirs, mysteries, romance, psychological, thrillers, and more! My least favourite genre, is probably graphic novels, and anything religious.
3. Do you have any pets/children?
I have no children, but 4 younger siblings that I take care of full time, so it sure feels like I do, as I write them I am keeping one eye on two of them that are home today, My younger sister is 12, my younger brothers are 6, 4, and 1 (almost 2), and I have 2 cats, a beautiful tortoiseshell, second generation, Checkers, and a pure white kitten, about 11 months old, named Smudge (he has a single dark smudge on his head, and the adoption rescue agency named him for it) and a bird, Birdy (named by the 4 year old), we have had many other pets, but have moved 21 times and unfortunately lost many to unfortunate circumstances, so they are our current pets.
4. Where is your favourite place to read?
In bed!
And I am looking very forward to this challenge, I am only recently recovering from a quite serious sickness, so have been able to read barely anything these last few months, so I am looking forward to catching back up on my reading!

I read Sabriel. I didn't know about Mister Monday. Heading off to look at that now...

Rothfuss is good but very long. I am listening to Book 2 on audio and it is 45 hours long! I think it could have done with a good edit to be honest, but the story is good.

I love Ilona Andrews! Everyone kept raving to me about how good the Kate Daniels series was and they were right.

I have not tried the others though. I will have to look into them too. Ah, my poor, bloated TBR... :-(

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments @Danni - it looks like you read almost anything! You'll be a fabulous asset once we start getting tasks.

I can't believe you've moved 21 times. Goodness, this last move I did from the UK has convinced me I don't want to move again for a very long time if I can help it.

I'm glad you're recovering from your illness and getting back into reading. Books are always the best medicine I think.

message 29: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1160 comments Hi everyone!! Am totally, totally excited to be doing the Tower Teams Challenge once again! In fact, my first ever team challenge was the Tower Teams 3 and after that I just fell in love with team challenges. :)

To tell a little about myself,

I am from Pune, India; which is towards the western part of the country and about a 3 hour drive from Bombay/Mumbai. I live here with my husband and have one daughter who is 8 years old, soon to be 9. I am a stay at home mom and currently home schooling my daughter. So my days are spent in either reading or teaching her or searching for newer and better material to teach her.

Most and least favourite genre: I read almost everything. I honestly am a book slut. I don't mind any book that is thrown my way, except maybe YA but if it is required for a challenge, I will even read YA!

However, my favourite genres include Crime fiction, true crime, literary fiction, dystopia, classics, horror, mystery and suspense thrillers, humour, fantasy (which includes all kinds of fantasy) and romance and non fiction or religious fiction as well as philosophy. I am a huge fan of Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse, Nevil Shute, Ilona Andrews, Debbie Macomber, Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb, Scott Lynch, Robyn Carr and many more authors. Recently, I started the Dresden Files series and I must say that I have become a huge fan of Harry Dresden as well! :D

I love to read best in the living room on the couch or in bed. However, most of the times I get my serious room done in my study/home work space; which was basically my office before I stopped working to become a full time stay at home mom. :) That said, I can almost read anywhere but these days with age (:P) I have realised that reading while in a car is very difficult! ;)

Well, that's all about me. I have to say once again that I am totally excited to be playing this with you all. I know some of you from before in other groups, while some are totally new..so I am excited to get to know you all and chat more about books and everything! :D

message 30: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 278 comments Sri!!! How are you doing these days? :D

I read the first books of Dresden files last month. It's definitely got potential, I've heard the later books are even better.

message 31: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 278 comments Hi Danni! I have 17 cousins of all age groups who all live quite nearby so we frequently crash each other's house and it really gets so lively that at times(especially during the tag games) my 20 years old self feels like an 80 years old with creaky bones and joints.

And I second with NancyHelen that books really are the best medicine. Sometimes I even get phantom spells of cold so that I can skip classes and read books ;)

message 32: by Debbie (Doc) (new)

Debbie (Doc) This is my second Tower Team Challenge. I was in TT3 so it's been a while. I can't wait to get started!

A little about myself:

1. Where do you live? I live outside of Atlanta, GA in the US.

2. What is your favourite genre? What is your least favourite genre? I love to read just about anything. My favorite genre is mysteries. My second favorite, and the one that I read the most is romance. That includes paranormal, contemporary, and historical fiction. My least favorite genre is fantasy and storybook retellings. I'm not crazy about YA, but I will often pick up a book my 17 year old is reading so we can discuss and also to make sure that it is appropriate!

3. Do you have any pets/children? I have 2 dogs and recently adopted a kitten. I've always had dogs but saw this little black cat and had to have her. She was 5 weeks when we got her and is now almost 6 months and has taken over our house! I also have two daughters. My oldest is about to graduate high school and my youngest will start high school next year.

4. Where is your favourite place to read? We have a screened in porch, and I love to read there until it gets too cold. My second favorite is in bed curled up in my favorite blanket.

I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you and chat about books. I must say that with every challenge my TBR pile grows rather than getting reduced!

I have a younger sister who is 9 and she drives me crazy. All my cousins are younger than me (except one) and when they get together, they can seriously wreck a place.

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Hi! I'm Kimberly.

I live in Tasmania now, but I'm originally from San Francisco.

I'm typing on my phone so forgive me if I forget one of the questions.

I am such a moody reader. I really don't have a favourite genre - I'll read anything except religious books (so don't look to me to fill the 'spiritual' genre). Anything else though, I'm your gal.

I have one son, one dog, 16 sheep and some chickens. We live on a hobby farm, 15 minutes drive out of town. :)

I 'read' everywhere. I'm an audiobook junkie so I have a book in my ears whenever I have free time. I work full time though so I'm not a super fast reader. I get through about 2 books/week.

I loved the last Tower Challenge but I came in late. It'll be fun to be a part of this one from the beginning. :)

It's not easy, I can tell you that, and the eldest boy has ADHD, (so do I, without the hyperactivity) and the younger two copy all his hyperactive behaviours, and the almost-two year old has developed a naughty streak, and loves stirring his brothers up when they are in bad mood, so it definitely does my head in sometimes! We don't bother replacing the furniture, because even the good stuff they manage to ruin, so our even the high quality stuff in the formal lounge room has 'kid stains' on it, which is why all my stuff stays behind my bedroom door away from grabby hands. But I get through because I love them more than life itself, although there are times I would happily wring my 12 year old sisters neck, she's going through puberty and is the biggest handful of them all.

I definitely agree with you on that one, books can fix anything! It has really sucked because my illness has affected my concentration so I have wanted so desperately to read, but been able to do so, now that I finally can again, I just want to drown in books!
And trust me, it is not fun at all, moving so many times, my mother is very impulsive, so at one stage we were moving house every three months, so between 21 houses, 2 states, 4 cities/8 suburbs, all with a family of 7, life has been interesting. I have developed a serious loathing for moving though, and an desire to burn all packing boxes I see so I don't have to go through packing up all my stuff and unpacking it again. 620+ books are a lot to pack and unpack and order, thats just my room! not even including all the ones we keep in the reading room, on top of all the furniture required in a family of 7, (and all the other impulse buys my mother has made). It is a lot of work.

Yeah, I had a few goldfishes when I was a kid, and every other week they seemed to turn up dead, (may have had something to do with my sisters obsession with overfeeding them), and bunnies are really sensitive too, especially around kids, they have heart attacks whenever something too big happens around them, and they get out, we once had a rabbit that figured out how to jump over the fence of his enclosed area, and we used to have to sneak into the neighbours yard to catch him after he dug under the main fence.

message 41: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments @Sri - it's great to be doing another challenge with you again. I'm still not sure about how I feel about The Dresden Files. I've read the first two and I do have the third sitting on my iPad, but I wasn't completely blown away by them. I've been told they get better so I want to persevere (that and the fact that once I've started a series, I do like to finish it unless it is really bad).

@Kimberley - what prompted the move from San Francisco to Tasmania? That's quite a change!

@Danni - that moving schedule sounds like my worst nightmare. No wonder you have a hatred for moving boxes. It must have been awful, especially with so many of you in the family. There's something lovely about moving into a place and knowing you're going to stay there, isn't there.

message 42: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments NancyHelen wrote:

The short answer is that I married an Australian. :)

The longer answer is that I did not move direct from SF to Tas - combining the 2 times I lived in NYC, I was there almost half my life. I also lived in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Sydney (and returned to SF once too).

I too find it's nice to feel finally settled.

My husband loves the Dresden files - I do not. I've tried. I have also heard that the series gets better - but I assume those people found the first few books intriguing enough to carry on in the first place. I'm not convinced.

I'm currently reading and almost finished with Someone Knows My Name - I am so hoping it finishes up with a happy ending - it's a historical fiction story about an African woman who is enslaved in America in the late 1700s. Expectedly, some parts of it are hard.

What are the rest of you reading?

message 43: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Karen wrote: "I do need to give Rothfuss a try. Maybe I'll do that this challenge"

Karen - do you listen to audiobooks ever? The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is one of the very best audiobooks I have EVER listened to. It's a beautifully written book - with so many nuanced passages - it's wonderful to have then read to you. That's a book I will re-read/listen to.

message 44: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 1469 comments Ah - that explains it!

I agree with The Dresden Files. I found the first couple of books good, but a bit formulaic and they stretched my credulity far more than a lot of other urban fantasy I've read. I'm not going to give up on them quite yet, but they definitely aren't my favourite.

Your book looks great, and wow - look at that average rating! It must be really good. I'm in the middle of several books right now (I always tend to read about 5 books at once). Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater which, unlike every other Maggie book I've read, really isn't floating my boat; Pig City: From the Saints to Savage Garden which is really well written and really good (if you are into your Australian Rock music) and Blood Bound, the second in the Mercy Thompson series.

Thanks! I love audiobooks ; it is how I read about a third of my books ;) I got hooked on them during TT2.
I just got an email yesterday for a special deal on a subscription from audiofile which I'm going to sign up for as I usually get books from my libraries but the audio options are somewhat limited - after 3 years I figure it is time to get a sub. and have the luxury of choice ;) So your recommendation is perfect timing!

Dresden grows on you. I also read them all via audio and really enjoyed Marster's narration.
I think if you're not really into it then leave it aside ; I still enjoyed the first books but it wasn't until about 6 books that i was really keen to get the next one in the series. So if it just isn't working for you don't feel bad about moving on ;)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments Hello everyone,

Sorry for the late response. I tried to get on a few days ago and Goodreads was having issues...and the last two days I have been out of town for work seminars.

My name is Jennifer and I live in Arizona in the United States. I have two stepdaughters, ages 10 and 14. I also have two cats, Luna and Fiona.

My favorite genre changes regularly. I do like memoirs, mysteries, ya, urban fantasy and thrillers. Right now I'm into YA mystery/suspense. My least favorite genres would be romance and Westerns.

My favorite place to read is in the bath tub. There is nothing better than a good book and a nice relaxing bath in my opinion.
