It was okay, his ramblings were hard to get through sometimes and all the talk about what clothes people were wearing was pretty distracting. I get the point the author was making about materialism, etc. But I think it detracted from the book.
I haven't seen the movie yet (partly because I always wanted to read the book first) but I can see myself liking the movie better as long as they gave the material a decent treatment in the screenplay.

Yeah the same things bothered me too.
You should definitely check out the movie. Dark and gritty but interesting. And I liked the ending (a bit different than the book).

should be finished later today if i can ..."
I never recommend people read The Colour of Magic first because even though it's technically the first book in the series, it's not the best introduction to the world. I didn't really like the first two books but some of the later ones are much much better.

The Alchemist: A Graphic Novel
Amulet, Vol. 1: The Stonekeeper
Amulet, Vol. 2: The Stonekeeper's Curse
Amulet, Vol. 3: The Cloud Searchers
It's not much but it's better than nothing, right? haha

About the graphic novels, I'm sorry but they don't count for this team challenge.

So sorry to hear about your mother. I'm sure something of that nature means a long road to recovery and I hope that goes well. And I'm glad you were able to be there with/for her.
As Imke pointed out, graphic novels can't be used for this challenge (since points are based on pages, reading graphic novels I think are seen as unfair since it's a lot less text). Could you remove them from your Tower Teams shelf? They keep getting pulled into the spreadsheet every time we run the script.
But please don't worry/feel bad about not reading more books that qualify. Life happens and this is supposed to be a fun challenge for people, not a chore or obligation. Read what appeals when you can :)

I've finished the book for the top shelf of 'fun' goal but we don't have a new goal yet because the spreadsheet is down again and can't get it to update.
Other teams are having the same problem, but hopefully it will be up and running again soon.

I just finished reading Underworld. I don't know if it counts as a familiar, but in the book there is an immortal pet dove name Hope. She doesn't have any magic powers or anything like that, but she's always warning Pierce (MC) when there is danger or guides her to safety.
I think a pet being immortal and being able to do things like warn and guide its owner qualifies for the goal. It certainly isn't a normal pet and is more than just unusual (which is a separate goal).
I'll try again later tonight and see if I'm able to update the spreadsheet.

Used: Fat Girl Walking: Sex, Food, Love, and Being Comfortable in Your Skin…Every Inch of It read by me for top shelf of fun goal.

Used: Make Me Stay read by Imke for great body on cover.
New goals:
Read a book which has the main location (setting) as a bus, train, or other road based vehicle

~Australia Day Mini Challenge~![]()
We never said you would have only one puzzle :)
So, here we go!
Same rules apply, but before you start this puzzle, you must have already completed your previous puzzle and spell-it-outs. (and remember, once done those books are locked in and can't be moved).
This time those teams that were at the top of the overall leader board as at Jan1 receive puzzle AA, the middle puzzle A and the lowest puzzle B.
Good luck!

And yay for another puzzle. :)
ETA: I will be busy today celebrating Christmas with my family.
But I can help you with filling out the books for the new puzzle tomorrow Judith. :)
And I'll look for "all ears" book too.

New Goal:
Read a book with the word magic, sorcery, enchant or divine (plurals are acceptable) in the title
Imke wrote: "Used Rules of engagement for the goal, book that starts with "R".

So yep, we have 2 of the same goal. But the current BOM, Darker Shade of Magic, works for this and a few of us are reading it and will done in the next day or so. So we'll knock them out by the end of the week. :)

Enjoy Christmas & family time!
I didn't get through all of the goalless books. Although I went through most of them. There's like 5 left on the tab, I needed to get to work through so I had to stop.
-We have a lot of repeating letters this time around so I started sort of going by letter instead of word.
-And I tried to look for 'harder' to find letters first so if something would work for X, I didn't use it for S, etc. I think we should do this as new books are read as well.
-The lines highlighted in pink we don't have a book that works for the letter as far as I can tell.
-Lines that aren't filled out and not highlighted are ones I didn't get to yet.
-I checked audible book narrators for the letters I think we don't have as well. (Like none of the goalless books have a narrator name starting with a U, O, or X).
And Imke found a book with a character name starting with X and I believe she is starting that one so luckily we'll get that letter taken care of.

Oh, I didn't even think of that. In my head I had those goals checked off with the BOMs. Whoops!
I already grabbed your book and used it for one of the letters for the new mini challenge. It was pulled into the spreadsheet when the script ran so I was able to use it.

Finished An Ember in the Ashes. I'll search my kindle for another book that will fit the facial goal later tonight when I get home, hopefully this will be the last time we get that goal :)

Wow Judith great job with new challenge.
I am thinking of doing the books for missing letters first. To grab those double points.
How did you like An Ember in the Ashes Wren? It feels like I am thinking about reading it for ages...

Thanks :) Google and Wikipedia was my friend in getting those answers.
As close as we are to having the new mini challenge filled out I was thinking about mixing using books for goals or to spell out words. Especially since our goalless tab is going to be completely wiped out of books. We have until the end of the month to complete the mini challenge, I think that should be enough time to do it.
This reminds me though we need to fill in the last double point book for the first puzzle.
And I LOVED An Ember in the Ashes, FYI

Is there only one day left to use the boon? Just a reminded, so it does not go to waste...
You might be right, maybe I'll try to read books for goals and then those that are completed before I finish will squeeze into the mini-challenge.
There is no possibility we will win this challenge, but I like to fight until the end. :)
OK, I am now REALLY interested to read 'Ember in the Ashes', I just need to fitit into some goal. :D
I still didn't have time to find a book for 'all ears' goal. Kindle word search is returning A LOT of results, since they look for those words to be in the same sentence, not necessarily together. :/
I am going to read Feral Sins next. A lot fo people recomended it to me + it's on "Funny as Hell!" Listopia List.
Used: A Darker Shade of Magic read by me for Magic in title.

I was surprised how much I loved it. It has everything, mystery, action, suspense, love, friendship, and magic. I got attach quickly to some characters and I enjoyed the pacing, the tone, and plot. I recommend it :)

OK so that's now two more votes to push it up my TBR. :)

FYI - I placed the request to boon this so sometime within the next day we should have a new goal.
And just to keep in mind if we get a set of goals we really don't like, we have the mega-boon to use between now and then end of the month. I don't think that's the case now, but I certainly don't want to miss using it after we completed all those holiday themed goals :)

Used: The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by Wren for facial feature goal.
New goal: Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as 2004 - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable
New goal from boon: Read a book that was published in the last month

I'm getting ready to start: The Night Voice, which was just published on Tuesday so I'll take that goal.

New goal: Read a book where a character is a ghost

We don't have any unused books right now. Either they've gone to a goal or used to spell words in the mini challenge.
We're close to being done with the second puzzle, but yeah they completely wiped out out goalless books.
