Donna I liked it. It was very funny at times which I think helped a lot, otherwise it would be rather depressing. It was quite technical at times, but overall a good read. I look forward to seeing the movie.

Scott Fisher Finished this book a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic!
Tho I'm slow to do so, I can't wait to see the movie!

Derek Totally overrated.

Roger This book is amazing, I've read it three times in a fairly short period of time and am getting the urge to read it again. Going to watch the movie tomorrow, hopefully it's not terrible...

Fatima I loved this book so much it's actually my favourite fiction book of all time. Unfortunately, I borrowed it from the library so I don't really own the book but I will soon. I also want to watch the movie soon and I can't wait.

Aasha Ramlal I absolutely loved it!
That being said, yes, it was very technical at times and there were some moments when the science of it all sort of just flew over my head.

Adam Meek The book and movie are both good, but they streamlined the story so Matt Damon has a much easier time of it than book Watney.

Of course, I prefered the book.

I'm trying to keep my expectations down so that I enjoy the movie. I know it's going to be different but that doesn't mean it can't be good.

Dan Liked the book, but have resisted the urge to watch the movie as they very rarely live up to the book.
Lots of technical jargon in parts, moments of real tension in others, just felt the ending a little rushed after the big lead up to it, but definitely worth a read.

Roger I just watched this past weekend and I very much enjoyed the movie, there are obviously missing plot lines in the movie but I think they did a really good job adapting the book. Would definitely watch it again.

Patrick S. Just watched the movie. It was great! Not as good as the book though. A little bit less humor.

message 13: by Derek (new) - rated it 1 star

Derek Maybe you should change the name of this discussion to "Post here only if you loved The Martian".

Patrick Houston Derek wrote: "Totally overrated."

Totally agree. Great premise. Good plot. But log entry approach was tiresome. And we learned nothing about his real inner struggles of spending so much time alone facing death.

It was a very superficial novel.

Derek Thank you! Exactly, I was hoping for a bit more creativity in story-telling, sentence/paragraph/chapter structure, or even some insight to the "human experience" of the events, but it's more a straight-forward sci-fi adventure, which is fine, but one-dimensional.

Kendall Goossen Mr Weir could have fleshed out the book with a little more philosophy and psychology, but that would have made it to long for me. I read it in e book form, but I imagine it could have been a few inches thick with all that added in. And to do justice to that kind of book, the movie would have to be about 20 hours long. Same thing happened with Lord of the Rings. Excellent story, but remember it took you three weeks to read it.

I give this book 5 stars though. I love how he quits working on the potatoes to rig up his hot tub/hammock. And his attitude about figuring out how to water the plants. "Oh well, I'll think about that tomorrow!" I also enjoyed watching my brother read it, all the times Mark almost dies.

Aisha I really liked the book. The main thing which I found enthusiastic about this book was Mark's personality,he was really funny and gave the book a funny aspect too other than the whole depression thing.

Adam Meek Derek wrote: "...I was hoping for a bit more creativity in story-telling, sentence/paragraph/chapter structure, or even some insight to the "human experience" of the events,..."

I appreciate this point of view, but feel exactly the opposite.

The thing I liked about the Martian is how straight forward it is, without any of the literary pyrotechnics that have plagued SF since the New Wave of the 1960s. John W. Campbell could have printed it in Astounding.

Roger Kendall wrote: "Mr Weir could have fleshed out the book with a little more philosophy and psychology, but that would have made it to long for me. I read it in e book form, but I imagine it could have been a few in..."

Similar to thecryptile, to me it was very refreshing that none of this was in here. There are plenty of books that get into things like that and I'm happy this wasn't one of them. Not everything has to be about a deeper meaning sometimes it's just nice to read a story for the entertainment and nothing deeper.

I agree with you Roger

Shanna_redwind I loved the book just the way it was. I do understand the people that didn't like it as much and were looking for something more out of it, but it was exactly what I like to read. A "man vs nature" story without much of the "Man vs Man" or "Man vs himself" I'm always looking for straight forward stories that contain little interpersonal confict.

I really enjoyed the movie as well. It's the first movie that I haven't found the 3D distracting. It's been about a year since I read the book, so the details had faded and I didn't have to worry so much about what was different. I liked the nods they had toward sections of story that there just wasn't time to go into detail with, so they just stuck them in the movie without long explanations.

Chuck Burgio I just finished The Martian by Andy Weir. I thought it was excellent and had a hard time putting it down. The humor was very funny and timed perfectly. Well researched and interesting. Chuck Burgio.

Mithilesh Kumar Good, but based on flawed setting of "Storm" on the Mars. Storm is not possible at 1/90 atm pressure.

Marilyn Disagree with Derek; agree with thecryptile. There are thousands of books that give us insight into the human mind and soul facing death. I particularly liked that whenever Mark even mentioned how he was likely to die, he did it in a lighthearted way, and never lost his optimism, even under the most dire circumstances. I believe most engineers/scientists really do think this way: they are less concerned with their own mortality and meaning in the universe than they are with solving problems and removing obstacles.

message 25: by Edwin.Florez (new) - added it

Edwin.Florez I think there are round and flat characters in this book. I think Mark is a round character. I think he is the most interesting character in the book. He is funny and clever and he is the main character. The rest of the characters are pretty much flat. They aren't very interesting and we don't learn anything about them.

James Wilde I liked it, but didn't think it was great writing or storytelling. Mediocre generally with flashes of strength. A nice story, and a happy ending.

Ellen I liked it a lot even though I understood nothing of the science, nor was I interested. So I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Mark was the most round character but none of them were terribly fleshed out. But if he had been more real, I think I would have worried my way through the novel and enjoyed it less.

I also enjoyed the movie-I thought Matt Damon was perfect. The movie made the characters feel more real but the book had many details I liked. On the whole, I preferred the book but the movie did a great job, I thought.

Audrey I really liked this book. I liked how it was written, it was different from any other book I have read in that way. I really liked Mark. He was so funny and also very interesting.

Patrick S. Ellie wrote: "I liked it a lot even though I understood nothing of the science, nor was I interested. So I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Mark was the most round character but none of them were terribly..."

I agree with you, the science was soooooooooooo confusing.

Edwin.Florez Same. I thought it was pretty confusing.

I´m totally agree with you, I was hoping the whole book to read about his feelings and YEAH desperation, I think it gives the character realism so you can feel sorry/happy/worried for him... I didn't feel anything for him because he was so fake.

Carolina Gonzalez I find this book quite tedious and hard to finish. I liked at first but then became so repetitive and he was always the same positive guy he didn't evolved with the story and the time he was isolated in mars. The rest of the characters were so flat. In my opinion the book turned boring before half of it.

message 34: by Edwin.Florez (new) - added it

Edwin.Florez I thought overall it was a pretty good book. I think Mark's dialogue kept it interesting throughout the book. Like his humor and the ideas he kept coming up with.

message 35: by AJ (new) - rated it 2 stars

AJ I love science and space travel so I was surprised when I didn't like this book. I found the characters to be little more than caricatures with quip-y lines, that hardly changed in the course of the novel. I didn't care about any of them, on top of that the book somehow made science boring!?

I think it made science more fun with all his nicknames for large words making it more interesting for people that dislike dry books

Donna Arcara I totally enjoyed it!

Patrick wrote: "I recently finished this book and I thougt is was amazing! :)" I liked this book a lot. It was an inspiration of the durability of the human spirit and the willingess to live minute to minute if that's what it takes to survive to the next "fix". The story is challenging and funny all at once as the stranded astronaut uses his engineering training to survive and re-initiate contact with home planet.

Saeed I listened to it and I was so hooked that I stayed up until 6am. easy 5 stars, but not a favorite.

Edwin.Florez I think the climax of the book is when Mark gets saved.
