what'd you think about the characters in the book?

Well... apparently, each of the characters in the book have meanings to their names .
Cadence : the flow or rhythm of events, especially the pattern in which something is experienced:
Johnny : a familiar term of address for a man or boy.
Mirren : Means “sea white, sea fair.”
Gat : a pistol or revolver.

At the beginning, I kind of liked Cady. But then as the book went on, I felt like she was selfish. Then I didn't like her because HOW COULD SHE DO THAT?! JUST START A FIRE WITHOUT EVEN THINKING ABOUT THE REST OF HER FRIENDS?!
I can't help thinking, maybe she has mental illness. I mean would she have been imagining seeing her cousins and her friend? how come no one noticed her talking to herself?
And the fire? Tell me a good reason why a sane person would decide to start a fire in their grandparent's house.

I feel like Cady wasn't a reliable source of information, about the details on the summer of 15. Her doctor said that she has selective amnesia. So, maybe she knew the truth but was in very great denial?

Maybe she was already insane from the very beginning? and the accident just triggered it. maybe she's just dealing with a huge loss?

Yeah, I agree. I thought Cady was awesome at first but then she just seemed selfish and like a brat.
Even though I loved this book, i'm still confused about why she saw her friends, even though they were dead. And why did she run into the ocean after she relised what happened. Was she trying to kill herself? And what about when she kayaked to the cliff face, did she just do it alone? How did she know where it was?

It is a bit weird that nobody noticed her talking to herself but maybe it's because they all though she was crazy because she was drugged up and apparently had some type of brain damage. Maybe they just though she needed time alone??

Cady was in complete denial that her cousins and friends were dead. She suffered post traumatic stress disorder and showed all the signs. Her family knew about her symptoms and the doctors instructed them to let her work it out on her own the true events that happened. That is why the family went back to the island, so that she could revisit the events that took place in her mind that she completely blocked out. Stress and trauma are amazingly powerful emotions and our brains will go to great lengths to shut them down to 'save' us. Please don't assume that someone who is suffering through horrific events is 'crazy'
