A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (Group Read October 2015)

This book was amazing. I did finish it in October, but much like every other month we have a group read I always forget to post my thoughts within the month. I was not expecting what I got out of the book and found it to be surprisingly deep and insightful. I did listen to it on audio and loved the narrator. I also looked at all of the illustrations in the print book which were very well done and brought the book to life. It was a great book and I am glad to have read it.

Don't feel bad, Christie. I just finished the book last night, so I'm way late.

Since I didn't know how to shelve the book, I'd asked the other mods and no one knew how to really shelve it. I get that now. I sort of think it's realistic fiction with a twist, but there is a fairy tale element as well.

So I read the last few chapters in bed last night and (view spoiler)[that was not the best idea because I'm crying and wondering how I'm going to sleep. That entire scene where he had to let his mom go was tough! (hide spoiler)]

I'm glad that we ended up having this as a group read. I'd been putting off reading the book for a while and don't know if I ever would have gotten around to it otherwise. It wasn't the dark or spooky Halloween book that I was hoping for, but it was still good.

Lyzzi, it's a shorter book, if that helps at all. But I know where you're at. My reading slumps almost always demand that I turn to mindless fluff.

Nice! I almost wish that it wasn't being marketed as a children's movie though, even if the main character is a child.

Parents are probably going to be surprised when they take their kids to this movie.

It was the feel-good movie of the year! Oh wait...
