CFDeeDee Welcome Vicki ;)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Great, Vicki!

I just wanted to let you know I'm having (very demanding) visitors right now, and that's why I'm MIA. I'm reading all your post, and doing some gophering for my second book.
I'll be fully back next Monday!

Yes, I'm reading it that way as well but I thought it could be interpreted the other way so I'm being prepared. Just in case.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Welcome Vicki! Glad you're on our team. :)

message 55: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Where is everybody. I imagine you're all busy gophering with the aim of blowing away the competition?

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I've been pretty busy, just got up starting my day, getting my kids off to school, then I'm going for a walk and the dreaded grocery shopping!

message 57: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I'm holding off on the grocery shopping until I get back from my dad's this weekend. It's Thanksgiving here and I'm taking 4 days off. No point in filling the fridge.

message 58: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments At the moment I'm just trying to hold it together at work, I do have a gophering shelf started though and a few holds in at the library....

message 59: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Just came back from the dentist. My lip looks like a golf ball. At least it doesn't hurt at all!

Loved the gopher!

message 60: by Tasha (last edited Oct 10, 2015 05:27AM) (new)

Tasha I have a hold and some books downloaded. These are the books I'll be choosing from:

Persuasion
A Judgement in Stone
Callander Square
Breaking Silence
Frenchman's Creek

ETA: I'll see if I can find a book that has some shorter words as well.

I most likely won't manage all of them, although I've done it in the past, but I'll certainly try! Most are under 300 pages so that's a plus.

Good news!!

message 62: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Sandra you reminded me when my friend tagged along me with me to the dentist, she laughed so hard at the way I looked with a numb lip ^^"

~

I'm still reading The Thirteenth Tale, does it count in ?

message 63: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I had a numb lip this week too from the dentist. My filling fell out and it needing replacing. It is a bad feeling too. I hate it.

message 64: by Kerri (new)

Kerri I'm visiting interstate with my parents this week, so haven't had much of a chance to do any serious gophering. I'll be home again on the weekend and be making up for lost time then.

Books have to be started during the Toppler to count.

message 66: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee So I see .. Its my first toppler so I'm kinda new to the rules ..

message 67: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments I've done my gophering and have books lined up to choose from. None are too long and either I own them or can get my hands on them quickly.
The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax
The Quickening
The Archivist's Story
Fuzzy Navel
Brooklyn
Yellow Crocus
The Cove
Away
Pomegranate Soup

message 68: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments The Quickening is a really fast read read, Roz.

Toppler Rules - message 1

Don't worry. We'll help out and keep you in the loop.

message 70: by Debra (last edited Oct 09, 2015 03:51AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I see some folks lining up for Q books. I've got Q, X, and Z covered. I think 3 is all I can manage that week.

A Quiet Belief in Angels
The Xibalba Murders
Zombie

message 71: by CFDeeDee (last edited Oct 09, 2015 04:41AM) (new)

CFDeeDee I've just had a good look at all my books which I currently have, I couldn't find anything with a Q or X or Z :(

I guess I'll go with these:

The Book Thief
The Gunslinger
The Outsiders

I also have To Kill a Mockingbird but does it count for the "T" or the "K" ?
I might switch it with The Outsiders if it counts for "K"

I also might get First Grave on the Right but not sure yet .. So there might be slight changes to the list if any other books were added to my collection.

message 72: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I think it would count for the "t".

We're going to need connector words, so I wouldn't worry over much about getting q, x, z, and j words. Just pick books you can commit to reading and we'll play with them when it comes to doing up the board.

Fuzzy Navel looks good for points which reminded me of Fuzzy Nation which I can get on audio.

My short list is now:

When Everything Feels Like the Movies
Marzi
The White Tiger

audio books:
We Need New Names
The Zahir
Fuzzy Nation

message 74: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I'm away this weekend for Canadian Thanksgiving so probably won't be on much, but when I get home, the gophering goes into overdrive. :)

message 75: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Enjoy, Janice!

message 76: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Enjoy!

message 77: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I might be off the country on a road trip on 21 and won't return back till 26, which means no internet connection .. But I'll be having at least one book with me and I'll make sure I finish it before 24 .. I'll post the title of the book when I decide which book to take along ..

message 78: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments There's lots of reading time before the 21st, CFDeeDee. I hope you fall in love with the topplers like the rest of us.

message 79: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I'm so excited about it for sure .. Gonna spend the whole time reading .. I'm even planing in buying a new book for it ;P
Ps. What does the word "toppler" mean exactly?

message 80: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Toppler was coined for our very first one. The idea was to topple the piles of books waiting to be read. So, it became a "toppler".

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I'm getting excited as well, sure glad it wasn't this week, it is been a very emotional and drama filled week, but tomorrow it is a new week!!!

message 82: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee hmmmm .. Interesting meaning in putting it that way !
another good thing too, my exam would be in two days, so I guess I'll be free of exams next week! I hope I would !

message 84: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I've added books to my list! I guess once we get going I'll firm down what I'll be reading.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) To be completely honest if I plan to read books, I will read everything but those books I plan to read, so I'm just going to read what I'm in the mood for, but I will try to maximize points :-)
I'm the girl in your book club, that finishes the book the morning of the meeting, love my book club, but I do put it off, I think it's just the having to read something :-)

message 86: by Kerri (new)

Kerri I know what you mean, Berit. I've made a list of short high scoring books I have access to, that doesn't mean I'll read any of them though. I could change my mind completely between now and the toppler.

message 87: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments CFDeeDee wrote: "So I see .. Its my first toppler so I'm kinda new to the rules .."

The basic ones don't change, so after this Toppler you'll be used to them. We still all forget sometimes.

Janice didn't mention that almost every Toppler leads to adding more books than you read :p

message 89: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Hehehe .. That happens even without a toppler !
I just get a bad feeling when I go and a buy a book, and then it turns out its not my type of a book !
On the other hand buying a new book always feels good!

I feel like a walking encyclopedia of titles and authors as a result of all the discussions. I walked into Chapters a couple of months ago and recognized so many of the titles. Scary! What was even scarier is that they are all on my wishlist.

message 91: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Its better than not recognising any .. Right ?! So see it on the other way round, it'll feel better :D

message 92: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments There used to be a time when that was the case, CFDeeDee. There used to be a time when my wish list was 10 books.

message 93: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Woow Janice, never thought that would be possible!
The weirder part would be if your list is over 30 books and you can't find any of the books around !

message 94: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I've identified 5 books as definites, but I'm not sure I will get 5 done. We'll see what happens.

DTB:
10 pts - Queen of Abaddon - 212 pages
3 pts - Magic Bleeds - 349 pgs
8 pts - Jackaby - 299 pgs

AUDIOBOOK:
8 pts - Jhereg - 8:45 hrs
3 pts - Blaze - 8:12 hrs

Grid points:
Queen: 14
Magic: 10
Jackaby: 25
Jhereg: 17
Blaze: 16

My grid points may have some errors. Bookkeeper needs calculator to add, you know.

message 95: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4530 comments Of course the grid points are only base points. You may be able to land on a triple letter, double word, triple word or something else to up the count. One can only hope.

message 96: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee There are slight changes in my reading list .. And pretty sure its the final list !

The Book Thief = 3 points - 543 pages
The Gunslinger = 2 points - 238 pages
The Da Vinci Code = 2 points - 593 pages
The King Of Torts = 5 points - 372 pages
The Outsiders = 1 point - 218 pages

Not sure how to count the grid points !

Having a look at it now it looks like a heavy reading list !
I hope I get through at least 3 or 4 books since I got slower in reading for unknown reason !

message 97: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments You get points for each book you read based on the first letter of the book (first word excluding the, a, an, etc).

Then you get grid points. As people read, we'll put the first words of the title onto the grid, like in Scrabble, and every letter will count.

I understand there will be bonus spots on the grid giving double and triple points.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I don't have any idea what I'm reading, to be completely honest, but I will try to get maximum points, I need to look at the letter scores again :-)

message 99: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments jaxnsmom said that we can drive ourselves crazy trying to come up with the best scoring words. So don't put a lot of pressure on yourself, Berit. I think you're best to pick some books you want to read and let the tiles fall where they will.

message 100: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) That was really kind of my plan, so we will see what I end up reading :-)
