I read a book in 5th or 6th grade, which would have been 1993 or 1994, about a boy who becomes an apprentice to a wizard. The wizard has "magical" artifacts and is searching for more. Through the course of the book it becomes apparent that these magical artifacts are just mundane items that you and I see every day like a magnifying glass and a pair of scissors and the story actually takes place far in a post-apocolyptic future. I found a forum post about the book here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/s... but there was no conclusion there either. It is definitely not The Sword of Shannara.

After searching every book published in 1994 or earlier with the word "apprentice" in the title because I had a feeling it was called the Wizard's Apprentice or Magician's Apprentice, I figured it out. It's The Magician's Apprentice. I sent a message the the forum poster to let them know too! They were happy to have it solved after two years :)
