Michelle (misuwuzhere) | 10 comments I read this around 15 years ago in the 2nd grade and have been looking for it ever since.

I believe the novel is centered around a boy who meets a girl who is unable to talk and instead writes on a chalkboard that she wears around her neck.

(SPOILER) In the end, she comes running down the lane and exclaims that she actually can talk and thanks the boy for helping her find her voice or something like that. Help!!

Michelle, is this a picture book or a chapter book?

What's the tone - sad, angsty/coming-of-age, funny, etc.?

Michelle (misuwuzhere) | 10 comments It's a chapter book I believe and I vaguely remember the book having a similar feel to Anne of Green Gables so I would say it was more of a coming of age story.

The cover may have been similar to that of Anne of the Island except I visualize a more light pastel or perriwinkle color. Again, my memory is faulty so this may purely be speculation.

I've been looking for this book for years!

Part of a series?

Michelle (misuwuzhere) | 10 comments I want to say it takes place in the early 1900s, since I don't recall any modern technology in the books, but I can't say that for sure.

I don't think it's part of a series, but if it was, it would have to be the first book of one as there was no overarching plotline or unexplained events or allusion to previous events

Abigail (handmaiden) | 391 comments Could it be Kilmeny of the Orchard? It's by the same author as Anne of Green Gables, and is about a mute girl.

Michelle (misuwuzhere) | 10 comments Yes it's it! Thank you so much! I've literally been searching for this book for 15 years now. I always thought the book was longer so I never checked out her novellas, but I really should have. Also got the age of the characters wrong so I forgot all about the romance which threw me off completely. I'm extremely impressed at my 2nd grade self for being able to analyze and compare/recognize writing style though.

Thank you again! I'm literally in shock right now, and there were some tears!
