James Corkill | 6 comments The Alex Cave Series book 4. Gravity
It begins dragging satellites from orbit and the shorelines of every continent in the Northern Hemisphere could be destroyed, in this action packed science fiction adventure.

Geophysicist Alex Cave receives an urgent message about an unusual geologic event in Iceland. When he arrives, he sees two video recordings. The first is of large globules of glowing magma rising from a glacier. The second video, taken in the exact same place several days later, shows a deep tunnel below the ice. He is asked to investigate the strange phenomenon, and what he discovers at the bottom is an alien device more powerful than a nuclear weapon.

Before Alex can retrieve it, the device is stolen and activated, but it cannot be turned off. It begins dragging satellites from orbit and threatens to bring down the International Space Station. When it begins changing the orbit of the moon, Alex and his friends begin a desperate race to find the device and shut it down before the tidal effect rips the planet apart.
Soon the western shorelines of every continent in the northern hemisphere will be destroyed and redefined by an extreme tidal effect, unless Alex and his friends can find an unconventional way to re-stabilize the orbit of the moon.

Alex must make a life changing choice when his soul mate threatens to leave because she thinks he’s just an adventure junkie, and it is ripping his heart out that he can’t tell her the truth. He is just trying to save humanity from annihilation.

John LeViness (jlawrence) | 1 comments Every action has consequences. Some change everything for the good. Others can get you killed. The worst kind can get people you love killed instead.

Thaniel wasn't looking for enemies. He never meant to hurt anyone. But he wasn't the type to do nothing while the innocent got hurt. So when he saw the terror in his girl's eyes and a soldier chasing her, he couldn't just stand there.

As a slave, he surely wasn't trying to attract the attention of the Ontar either. Why would he want to awaken any kind of magic that can be used to Call monsters down out of the sky? Who would actually be that stupid?

But he did...

As the whirlwind of consequence gains intensity and the people he loves the most are swept into the tumult, it's up to Thaniel to find a way to save his loved ones. Join Thaniel and friends on an epic adventure as he discovers that monsters are not just born...

Sometimes, they are Inborn

Claire Gem | 3 comments I would like to nominate my neo-gothic contemporary romance, Phantom Traces.

“A history professor in a tweed jacket, a cheeky Goth chick, and a pipe-smoking, book-hurling ghost. Put them all together in an antiquated library and…well...”

Abigail Stryker is not your ordinary librarian. She’s reinventing her life after a tragic, secret affair with her late graduate advisor. Abby moves to the tiny burg of Caldwell, NC, her goal to revive the antiquated Harvey library. The task is more complex than she ever dreams. The County Commissioner’s tenacious young wife is hell-bent on shutting the place down, and a pipe-smoking, book-hurling ghost has lately plagued the building.

Jack Wood is a history professor at Caldwell’s community college, his tweed jacket and silver-streaked hair marking him, in Abby’s mind, strictly off limits. But Jack’s taken a new interest in preserving local history since Abby came to town. Unfortunately, it’s his boss who wants the library gone. And Abby’s mindset about older men means Jack will have to work extra-hard to win her heart.

Abby enlists Jack’s help to figure out what has stirred the spirit of the library’s founder, and why he’s still trapped within its walls after over 100 years. In so doing, they uncover a tragic, 19th century tale of everlasting love. “Phantom Traces” combines a modern love story, a historical tragedy, and a spooky paranormal in a multilayered, fast-paced plot guaranteed to take the reader on an emotional ride.

Book Trailer on my Goodreads Author Page!

Excerpt:

At that moment, the lights in the building flickered, dropping dim and pale. They pulsed for a beat, then went completely out. It was still light outside, though the fading twilight cast the interior into near blackness.
“What the . . .” She looked around, wrapping her arms around herself and instinctively moving a step closer to Jack.
“Oh, that’s not unusual around here.” His voice was calm and reassuring. “Blue Ridge Power is infamous for testing transformers at the darnedest times of day.”
By the time he finished speaking, the lights began to glow, then steadily increased until they were fully illuminated. He grinned over at her. “At least it doesn’t last long.”
His killer smile shot a jitter through her middle again. She smiled back but found she couldn’t hold his gaze long without feeling as if she had a fever coming on. She turned away.
“I’d better let you get to work,” she mumbled, then scooted around the reception desk and into the back room.
Tea. I just need a cup of peppermint tea to get my mind back where it belongs.
As she stood in the small anteroom, she could feel Jack watching her from his seat across the way. She dunked the tea bag in the steaming water for way longer than necessary. As the pale green essence oozed into the water, all she could think of was how the hue almost matched the color of his eyes.

Deborah (goodreadscomdeborah_jay) | 5 comments James Bond meets Lord of the Rings

Award winning novel, THE PRINCE’S MAN, is a sweeping tale of spies and deadly politics, inter-species mistrust and magic phobia, with an underlying thread of romance.

Rustam Chalice, hedonist, dance tutor, gigolo and spy, loves his life just the way it is, so when the kingdom he serves is threatened from within, he leaps into action. Only trouble is, the spy master, Prince Hal, teams him up with an untouchable aristocratic assassin who despises him.

And to make matters worse, she’s the most beautiful woman in the Five Kingdoms.

To track the would-be usurper, Rustam and Lady Risada join the prince’s daughter as part of her party on the social circuit, travelling to the fests thrown by each of the great houses. In the secret dungeons beneath one mansion they make a shocking discovery: an elf, a member of a species believed long vanished from the kingdom in the wake of a devastating war between the races.

Too late, the spies discover they are behind enemy lines. Their only viable escape route is to cross the mountains to another kingdom, and they are forced to leave the princess behind, hoping that her position will offer her some protection, even if only as a hostage. Taking the sickly elf with them as a political pawn, the mismatched pair struggles to keep him alive while surviving deadly wildlife, the machinations of a spiteful god - and each other.

But when the elf reveals that Rustam has magic of his own, he is forced to question his identity, his sanity and worst, his loyalty to his prince, for in Tyr-en all magic users are put to death. He must also keep the knowledge from Lady Risada, who is set on upholding the kingdom’s laws at any cost, at the same time as trying to learn enough about his burgeoning abilities to keep everyone around him safe.

As secrets pile up and old enemies must be courted for aid, the kingdom’s only hope comes finally to rest on a return journey through the beautiful, unsettling and hostile elven kingdom, where Rustam will come face to face with his goddess and make the most important choice of his life: stay, and settle down with those who accept him as he is, or embrace his magic, return to save his prince’s kingdom – and die.

Charles Vrooman (greenpower) | 73 comments Green Power by Charles Vrooman
With today’s concerns about global warming and the need for alternate energy sources, I believe that the environmental thriller, “Green Power”, would be a good choice for EBM BOTM.
SYNOPSIS:
Following the Three Mile Island accident and the deadly Chernobyl disaster, the safety of nuclear power frightened everyone. This prevailing attitude encouraged Dr. Ray Pendleton to lead a demonstration to close down Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Plant. Following the shutdown of this power plant, Dirk Hendrickson loses his job as head of security. Dirk convinces two of his fellow Delta Valley Militiamen to physically attack Ray. Ray survives the beating and is motivated to set up methane digesters as an alternative source of electrical power for Lodi dairies.
Dirk’s continued attacks on the professor and his projects results in a death threatening epidemic pointing to one of Ray’s methane lagoons as the cause. The infected patients are admitted to UC Davis Medical Center. Linda McCord, a lab tech at the hospital and former microbiology student of Dr. Pendleton, works with Ray to prove that the methane power source is not the cause of this spreading disease. Both Ray and Linda develop a romantic relationship while working together. Linda is devastated when Ray comes down with a serious infection caused by the same type of bacterium responsible for the epidemic.
