In recent memory, The Name of the Star (Shades of London, #1) by Maureen Johnson and The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray I was pretty freaked by the end...Naughty John in the Diviners is CREEPY! And I was genuinely worried for the MC at the end of The Name of the Star.

172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad had nightmares for days after reading it.
Hexed (The Witch Hunter, #1) by Michelle Krys its not only scary so its still one of my fave books, but the scary parts is hiding in the corner with the light on with pillow scary.

message 8: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I thought Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn was exceptionally freaky for what it was. Otherwise probably NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

I own 172 hours on the Moon, Oda, but have not read it yet. Maybe I'll have to get it out for Halloween!

Huhuh.. Well be warned, and good luck getting some sleep the days after you finish it. (btw the author is norwegian and one of the characters is from a place close to my grandmom`s house.)

The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey

The whole series is very scary! But especially the first two books, I think.

message 17: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments I agree with Brigid! My absolute favorite horror series! I'm wishing I would have waited and read the last two in October lol

Karen’s Library | 11320 comments Mod
I just bought the first two books and will try The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey again but this time in print. I never really got into it like everyone else did, so maybe it was my mood at the time.

message 19: by Carol (new)

Carol Nicolas | 32 comments The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, published in 1898. I read it as a kid, and it scared me so bad I couldn't sleep or be alone.
