That's one of the things I love about this series. Many of the secondary characters are complex. As the series progresses we see them in different circumstances and learn more about their motivations and how they handle themselves. They aren't straight friend/enemy figures.

LK, it is epic fantasy, but not as much of a nasty free-for-all as Game of Thrones. There are several relationships that develop throughout the books, and it's nice to see them progress. They don't add in much personal drama as there is plenty else going on.

To me the series is more like Miles Vorkosigan in a fantasy world, but not as frantic or wild.

I stayed up waaaay too late last night and finished. So much happens in this book. I kept looking at how little I had left to read and wondering if I remembered events wrong as I couldn't imagine it could all occur. But, it did, and I didn't feel rushed either.
